"You are sons of the LORD your God; do not cut yourselves or make a bald spot on your head on behalf of the dead, | 1You are children of the LORD your God. Do not cut yourselves or shave your forehead bald for the sake of the dead. |
for you are a holy people belonging to the LORD your God. The LORD has chosen you to be his own possession out of all the peoples on the face of the earth. | 2For you are a people holy to the LORD your God. He has chosen you to be his people, prized above all others on the face of the earth. |
"You must not eat any detestable thing. | 3You must not eat any forbidden thing. |
These are the animals you may eat: oxen, sheep, goats, | 4These are the animals you may eat: the ox, the sheep, the goat, |
deer, gazelles, roe deer, wild goats, ibexes, antelopes, and mountain sheep. | 5the ibex, the gazelle, the deer, the wild goat, the antelope, the wild oryx, and the mountain sheep. |
You may eat any animal that has hooves divided in two and chews the cud. | 6You may eat any animal that has hooves divided into two parts and that chews the cud. |
But among the ones that chew the cud or have divided hooves, you are not to eat these: camels, hares, and hyraxes, though they chew the cud, they do not have hooves--they are unclean for you; | 7However, you may not eat the following animals among those that chew the cud or those that have divided hooves: the camel, the hare, and the rock badger. (Although they chew the cud, they do not have divided hooves and are therefore ritually impure to you). |
and pigs, though they have hooves, they do not chew the cud--they are unclean for you. Do not eat their meat or touch their carcasses. | 8Also the pig is ritually impure to you; though it has divided hooves, it does not chew the cud. You may not eat their meat or even touch their remains. |
"You may eat everything from the water that has fins and scales, | 9These you may eat from among water creatures: anything with fins and scales you may eat, |
but you may not eat anything that does not have fins and scales--it is unclean for you. | 10but whatever does not have fins and scales you may not eat; it is ritually impure to you. |
"You may eat every clean bird, | 11All ritually clean birds you may eat. |
but these are the ones you may not eat: eagles, bearded vultures, black vultures, | 12These are the ones you may not eat: the eagle, the vulture, the black vulture, |
the kites, any kind of falcon, | 13the kite, the black kite, the dayyah after its species, |
every kind of raven, | 14every raven after its species, |
ostriches, short-eared owls, gulls, any kind of hawk, | 15the ostrich, the owl, the seagull, the falcon after its species, |
little owls, long-eared owls, barn owls, | 16the little owl, the long-eared owl, the white owl, |
eagle owls, ospreys, cormorants, | 17the jackdaw, the carrion vulture, the cormorant, |
storks, any kind of heron, hoopoes, and bats. | 18the stork, the heron after its species, the hoopoe, the bat, |
All winged insects are unclean for you; they may not be eaten. | 19and any winged thing on the ground are impure to you--they may not be eaten. |
But you may eat every clean flying creature. | 20You may eat any clean bird. |
"You are not to eat any carcass; you may give it to a resident alien within your city gates, and he may eat it, or you may sell it to a foreigner. For you are a holy people belonging to the LORD your God. Do not boil a young goat in its mother's milk. | 21You may not eat any corpse, though you may give it to the resident foreigner who is living in your villages and he may eat it, or you may sell it to a foreigner. You are a people holy to the LORD your God. Do not boil a young goat in its mother's milk. |
"Each year you are to set aside a tenth of all the produce grown in your fields. | 22You must be certain to tithe all the produce of your seed that comes from the field year after year. |
You are to eat a tenth of your grain, new wine, and fresh oil, and the firstborn of your herd and flock, in the presence of the LORD your God at the place where he chooses to have his name dwell, so that you will always learn to fear the LORD your God. | 23In the presence of the LORD your God you must eat from the tithe of your grain, your new wine, your olive oil, and the firstborn of your herds and flocks in the place he chooses to locate his name, so that you may learn to revere the LORD your God always. |
But if the distance is too great for you to carry it, since the place where the LORD your God chooses to put his name is too far away from you and since the LORD your God has blessed you, | 24When he blesses you, if the place where he chooses to locate his name is distant, |
then exchange it for silver, take the silver in your hand, and go to the place the LORD your God chooses. | 25you may convert the tithe into money, secure the money, and travel to the place the LORD your God chooses for himself. |
You may spend the silver on anything you want: cattle, sheep, goats, wine, beer, or anything you desire. You are to feast there in the presence of the LORD your God and rejoice with your family. | 26Then you may spend the money however you wish for cattle, sheep, wine, beer, or whatever you desire. You and your household may eat there in the presence of the LORD your God and enjoy it. |
Do not neglect the Levite within your city gates, since he has no portion or inheritance among you. | 27As for the Levites in your villages, you must not ignore them, for they have no allotment or inheritance along with you. |
"At the end of every three years, bring a tenth of all your produce for that year and store it within your city gates. | 28At the end of every three years you must bring all the tithe of your produce, in that very year, and you must store it up in your villages. |
Then the Levite, who has no portion or inheritance among you, the resident alien, the fatherless, and the widow within your city gates may come, eat, and be satisfied. And the LORD your God will bless you in all the work of your hands that you do. | 29Then the Levites (because they have no allotment or inheritance with you), the resident foreigners, the orphans, and the widows of your villages may come and eat their fill so that the LORD your God may bless you in all the work you do. |
