Berean Study Bible | New Living Translation |
O LORD, God of vengeance, O God of vengeance, shine forth. | 1O LORD, the God of vengeance, O God of vengeance, let your glorious justice shine forth! |
Rise up, O Judge of the earth; render a reward to the proud. | 2Arise, O Judge of the earth. Give the proud what they deserve. |
How long will the wicked, O LORD, how long will the wicked exult? | 3How long, O LORD? How long will the wicked be allowed to gloat? |
They pour out arrogant words; all workers of iniquity boast. | 4How long will they speak with arrogance? How long will these evil people boast? |
They crush Your people, O LORD; they oppress Your heritage. | 5They crush your people, LORD, hurting those you claim as your own. |
They kill the widow and the foreigner; they murder the fatherless. | 6They kill widows and foreigners and murder orphans. |
They say, “The LORD does not see; the God of Jacob pays no heed.” | 7“The LORD isn’t looking,” they say, “and besides, the God of Israel doesn’t care.” |
Take notice, O senseless among the people! O fools, when will you be wise? | 8Think again, you fools! When will you finally catch on? |
He who affixed the ear, can He not hear? He who formed the eye, can He not see? | 9Is he deaf—the one who made your ears? Is he blind—the one who formed your eyes? |
He who admonishes the nations, does He not discipline? He who teaches man, does He lack knowledge? | 10He punishes the nations—won’t he also punish you? He knows everything—doesn’t he also know what you are doing? |
The LORD knows the thoughts of man, that they are futile. | 11The LORD knows people’s thoughts; he knows they are worthless! |
Blessed is the man You discipline, O LORD, and teach from Your law, | 12Joyful are those you discipline, LORD, those you teach with your instructions. |
to grant him relief from days of trouble, until a pit is dug for the wicked. | 13You give them relief from troubled times until a pit is dug to capture the wicked. |
For the LORD will not forsake His people; He will never abandon His heritage. | 14The LORD will not reject his people; he will not abandon his special possession. |
Surely judgment will again be righteous, and all the upright in heart will follow it. | 15Judgment will again be founded on justice, and those with virtuous hearts will pursue it. |
Who will rise up for me against the wicked? Who will stand for me against the workers of iniquity? | 16Who will protect me from the wicked? Who will stand up for me against evildoers? |
Unless the LORD had been my helper, I would soon have dwelt in the abode of silence. | 17Unless the LORD had helped me, I would soon have settled in the silence of the grave. |
If I say, “My foot is slipping,” Your loving devotion, O LORD, supports me. | 18I cried out, “I am slipping!” but your unfailing love, O LORD, supported me. |
When anxiety overwhelms me, Your consolation delights my soul. | 19When doubts filled my mind, your comfort gave me renewed hope and cheer. |
Can a corrupt throne be Your ally—one devising mischief by decree? | 20Can unjust leaders claim that God is on their side— leaders whose decrees permit injustice? |
They band together against the righteous and condemn the innocent to death. | 21They gang up against the righteous and condemn the innocent to death. |
But the LORD has been my stronghold, and my God is my rock of refuge. | 22But the LORD is my fortress; my God is the mighty rock where I hide. |
He will bring upon them their own iniquity and destroy them for their wickedness. The LORD our God will destroy them. | 23God will turn the sins of evil people back on them. He will destroy them for their sins. The LORD our God will destroy them. |
