Then Job answered: | 1Then Job responded, |
“How long will you torment me and crush me with your words? | 2"How long will you torment me And crush me with words? |
Ten times now you have reproached me; you shamelessly mistreat me. | 3"These ten times you have insulted me; You are not ashamed to wrong me. |
Even if I have truly gone astray, my error concerns me alone. | 4"Even if I have truly erred, My error lodges with me. |
If indeed you would exalt yourselves above me and use my disgrace against me, | 5"If indeed you vaunt yourselves against me And prove my disgrace to me, |
then understand that it is God who has wronged me and drawn His net around me. | 6Know then that God has wronged me And has closed His net around me. |
Though I cry out, ‘Violence!’ I get no response; though I call for help, there is no justice. | 7"Behold, I cry, 'Violence!' but I get no answer; I shout for help, but there is no justice. |
He has blocked my way so I cannot pass; He has veiled my paths with darkness. | 8"He has walled up my way so that I cannot pass, And He has put darkness on my paths. |
He has stripped me of my honor and removed the crown from my head. | 9"He has stripped my honor from me And removed the crown from my head. |
He tears me down on every side until I am gone; He uproots my hope like a tree. | 10"He breaks me down on every side, and I am gone; And He has uprooted my hope like a tree. |
His anger burns against me, and He counts me among His enemies. | 11"He has also kindled His anger against me And considered me as His enemy. |
His troops advance together; they construct a ramp against me and encamp around my tent. | 12"His troops come together, And build up their way against me And camp around my tent. |
He has removed my brothers from me; my acquaintances have abandoned me. | 13"He has removed my brothers far from me, And my acquaintances are completely estranged from me. |
My kinsmen have failed me, and my friends have forgotten me. | 14"My relatives have failed, And my intimate friends have forgotten me. |
My guests and maidservants count me as a stranger; I am a foreigner in their sight. | 15"Those who live in my house and my maids consider me a stranger. I am a foreigner in their sight. |
I call for my servant, but he does not answer, though I implore him with my own mouth. | 16"I call to my servant, but he does not answer; I have to implore him with my mouth. |
My breath is repulsive to my wife, and I am loathsome to my own family. | 17"My breath is offensive to my wife, And I am loathsome to my own brothers. |
Even little boys scorn me; when I appear, they deride me. | 18"Even young children despise me; I rise up and they speak against me. |
All my best friends despise me, and those I love have turned against me. | 19"All my associates abhor me, And those I love have turned against me. |
My skin and flesh cling to my bones; I have escaped by the skin of my teeth. | 20"My bone clings to my skin and my flesh, And I have escaped only by the skin of my teeth. |
Have pity on me, my friends, have pity, for the hand of God has struck me. | 21"Pity me, pity me, O you my friends, For the hand of God has struck me. |
Why do you persecute me as God does? Will you never get enough of my flesh? | 22"Why do you persecute me as God does, And are not satisfied with my flesh? |
I wish that my words were recorded and inscribed in a book, | 23"Oh that my words were written! Oh that they were inscribed in a book! |
by an iron stylus on lead, or chiseled in stone forever. | 24"That with an iron stylus and lead They were engraved in the rock forever! |
But I know that my Redeemer lives, and in the end He will stand upon the earth. | 25"As for me, I know that my Redeemer lives, And at the last He will take His stand on the earth. |
Even after my skin has been destroyed, yet in my flesh I will see God. | 26"Even after my skin is destroyed, Yet from my flesh I shall see God; |
I will see Him for myself; my eyes will behold Him, and not as a stranger. How my heart yearns within me! | 27Whom I myself shall behold, And whom my eyes will see and not another. My heart faints within me! |
If you say, ‘Let us persecute him, since the root of the matter lies with him,’ | 28"If you say, 'How shall we persecute him?' And 'What pretext for a case against him can we find?' |
then you should fear the sword yourselves, because wrath brings punishment by the sword, so that you may know there is a judgment.” | 29"Then be afraid of the sword for yourselves, For wrath brings the punishment of the sword, So that you may know there is judgment." |
