Parallel Chapters Being One in Christ 1Therefore if you have any encouragement from being united with Christ, if any comfort from his love, if any common sharing in the Spirit, if any tenderness and compassion, | 1So if there is any encouragement in Christ, any comfort from love, any participation in the Spirit, any affection and sympathy, | 1Therefore if there is any encouragement in Christ, if there is any consolation of love, if there is any fellowship of the Spirit, if any affection and compassion, | 1If there be therefore any consolation in Christ, if any comfort of love, if any fellowship of the Spirit, if any bowels and mercies, | 1If then there is any encouragement in Christ, if any consolation of love, if any fellowship with the Spirit, if any affection and mercy, |
2then make my joy complete by being like-minded, having the same love, being one in spirit and of one mind. | 2complete my joy by being of the same mind, having the same love, being in full accord and of one mind. | 2make my joy complete by being of the same mind, maintaining the same love, united in spirit, intent on one purpose. | 2Fulfil ye my joy, that ye be likeminded, having the same love, being of one accord, of one mind. | 2fulfill my joy by thinking the same way, having the same love, sharing the same feelings, focusing on one goal. |
3Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather, in humility value others above yourselves, | 3Do nothing from selfish ambition or conceit, but in humility count others more significant than yourselves. | 3Do nothing from selfishness or empty conceit, but with humility of mind regard one another as more important than yourselves; | 3Let nothing be done through strife or vainglory; but in lowliness of mind let each esteem other better than themselves. | 3Do nothing out of rivalry or conceit, but in humility consider others as more important than yourselves. |
4not looking to your own interests but each of you to the interests of the others. | 4Let each of you look not only to his own interests, but also to the interests of others. | 4do not merely look out for your own personal interests, but also for the interests of others. | 4Look not every man on his own things, but every man also on the things of others. | 4Everyone should look out not only for his own interests, but also for the interests of others. |
The Attitude of Christ
(Isaiah 52:13-15) 5In your relationships with one another, have the same mindset as Christ Jesus: | 5Have this mind among yourselves, which is yours in Christ Jesus, | 5Have this attitude in yourselves which was also in Christ Jesus, | 5Let this mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus: | 5Make your own attitude that of Christ Jesus, |
6Who, being in very nature God, did not consider equality with God something to be used to his own advantage; | 6who, though he was in the form of God, did not count equality with God a thing to be grasped, | 6who, although He existed in the form of God, did not regard equality with God a thing to be grasped, | 6Who, being in the form of God, thought it not robbery to be equal with God: | 6who, existing in the form of God, did not consider equality with God as something to be used for His own advantage. |
7rather, he made himself nothing by taking the very nature of a servant, being made in human likeness. | 7but emptied himself, by taking the form of a servant, being born in the likeness of men. | 7but emptied Himself, taking the form of a bond-servant, and being made in the likeness of men. | 7But made himself of no reputation, and took upon him the form of a servant, and was made in the likeness of men: | 7Instead He emptied Himself by assuming the form of a slave, taking on the likeness of men. And when He had come as a man in His external form, |
8And being found in appearance as a man, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to death-- even death on a cross! | 8And being found in human form, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross. | 8Being found in appearance as a man, He humbled Himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross. | 8And being found in fashion as a man, he humbled himself, and became obedient unto death, even the death of the cross. | 8He humbled Himself by becoming obedient to the point of death-- even to death on a cross. |
9Therefore God exalted him to the highest place and gave him the name that is above every name, | 9Therefore God has highly exalted him and bestowed on him the name that is above every name, | 9For this reason also, God highly exalted Him, and bestowed on Him the name which is above every name, | 9Wherefore God also hath highly exalted him, and given him a name which is above every name: | 9For this reason God highly exalted Him and gave Him the name that is above every name, |
10that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, | 10so that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, | 10so that at the name of Jesus EVERY KNEE WILL BOW, of those who are in heaven and on earth and under the earth, | 10That at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of things in heaven, and things in earth, and things under the earth; | 10so that at the name of Jesus every knee will bow-- of those who are in heaven and on earth and under the earth-- |
11and every tongue acknowledge that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father. | 11and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father. | 11and that every tongue will confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father. | 11And that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father. | 11and every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father. |
Shining as Stars
(Matthew 5:13-16) 12Therefore, my dear friends, as you have always obeyed--not only in my presence, but now much more in my absence--continue to work out your salvation with fear and trembling, | 12Therefore, my beloved, as you have always obeyed, so now, not only as in my presence but much more in my absence, work out your own salvation with fear and trembling, | 12So then, my beloved, just as you have always obeyed, not as in my presence only, but now much more in my absence, work out your salvation with fear and trembling; | 12Wherefore, my beloved, as ye have always obeyed, not as in my presence only, but now much more in my absence, work out your own salvation with fear and trembling. | 12So then, my dear friends, just as you have always obeyed, not only in my presence, but now even more in my absence, work out your own salvation with fear and trembling. |
13for it is God who works in you to will and to act in order to fulfill his good purpose. | 13for it is God who works in you, both to will and to work for his good pleasure. | 13for it is God who is at work in you, both to will and to work for His good pleasure. | 13For it is God which worketh in you both to will and to do of his good pleasure. | 13For it is God who is working in you, enabling you both to desire and to work out His good purpose. |
14Do everything without grumbling or arguing, | 14Do all things without grumbling or disputing, | 14Do all things without grumbling or disputing; | 14Do all things without murmurings and disputings: | 14Do everything without grumbling and arguing, |
15so that you may become blameless and pure, "children of God without fault in a warped and crooked generation." Then you will shine among them like stars in the sky | 15that you may be blameless and innocent, children of God without blemish in the midst of a crooked and twisted generation, among whom you shine as lights in the world, | 15so that you will prove yourselves to be blameless and innocent, children of God above reproach in the midst of a crooked and perverse generation, among whom you appear as lights in the world, | 15That ye may be blameless and harmless, the sons of God, without rebuke, in the midst of a crooked and perverse nation, among whom ye shine as lights in the world; | 15so that you may be blameless and pure, children of God who are faultless in a crooked and perverted generation, among whom you shine like stars in the world. |
16as you hold firmly to the word of life. And then I will be able to boast on the day of Christ that I did not run or labor in vain. | 16holding fast to the word of life, so that in the day of Christ I may be proud that I did not run in vain or labor in vain. | 16holding fast the word of life, so that in the day of Christ I will have reason to glory because I did not run in vain nor toil in vain. | 16Holding forth the word of life; that I may rejoice in the day of Christ, that I have not run in vain, neither laboured in vain. | 16Hold firmly to the message of life. Then I can boast in the day of Christ that I didn't run or labor for nothing. |
17But even if I am being poured out like a drink offering on the sacrifice and service coming from your faith, I am glad and rejoice with all of you. | 17Even if I am to be poured out as a drink offering upon the sacrificial offering of your faith, I am glad and rejoice with you all. | 17But even if I am being poured out as a drink offering upon the sacrifice and service of your faith, I rejoice and share my joy with you all. | 17Yea, and if I be offered upon the sacrifice and service of your faith, I joy, and rejoice with you all. | 17But even if I am poured out as a drink offering on the sacrifice and service of your faith, I am glad and rejoice with all of you. |
18So you too should be glad and rejoice with me. | 18Likewise you also should be glad and rejoice with me. | 18You too, I urge you, rejoice in the same way and share your joy with me. | 18For the same cause also do ye joy, and rejoice with me. | 18In the same way you should also be glad and rejoice with me. |
Timothy and Epaphroditus 19I hope in the Lord Jesus to send Timothy to you soon, that I also may be cheered when I receive news about you. | 19I hope in the Lord Jesus to send Timothy to you soon, so that I too may be cheered by news of you. | 19But I hope in the Lord Jesus to send Timothy to you shortly, so that I also may be encouraged when I learn of your condition. | 19But I trust in the Lord Jesus to send Timotheus shortly unto you, that I also may be of good comfort, when I know your state. | 19Now I hope in the Lord Jesus to send Timothy to you soon so that I also may be encouraged when I hear news about you. |
20I have no one else like him, who will show genuine concern for your welfare. | 20For I have no one like him, who will be genuinely concerned for your welfare. | 20For I have no one else of kindred spirit who will genuinely be concerned for your welfare. | 20For I have no man likeminded, who will naturally care for your state. | 20For I have no one else like-minded who will genuinely care about your interests; |
21For everyone looks out for their own interests, not those of Jesus Christ. | 21For they all seek their own interests, not those of Jesus Christ. | 21For they all seek after their own interests, not those of Christ Jesus. | 21For all seek their own, not the things which are Jesus Christ's. | 21all seek their own interests, not those of Jesus Christ. |
22But you know that Timothy has proved himself, because as a son with his father he has served with me in the work of the gospel. | 22But you know Timothy’s proven worth, how as a son with a father he has served with me in the gospel. | 22But you know of his proven worth, that he served with me in the furtherance of the gospel like a child serving his father. | 22But ye know the proof of him, that, as a son with the father, he hath served with me in the gospel. | 22But you know his proven character, because he has served with me in the gospel ministry like a son with a father. |
23I hope, therefore, to send him as soon as I see how things go with me. | 23I hope therefore to send him just as soon as I see how it will go with me, | 23Therefore I hope to send him immediately, as soon as I see how things go with me; | 23Him therefore I hope to send presently, so soon as I shall see how it will go with me. | 23Therefore, I hope to send him as soon as I see how things go with me. |
24And I am confident in the Lord that I myself will come soon. | 24and I trust in the Lord that shortly I myself will come also. | 24and I trust in the Lord that I myself also will be coming shortly. | 24But I trust in the Lord that I also myself shall come shortly. | 24I am convinced in the Lord that I myself will also come quickly. |
Epaphroditus Commended 25But I think it is necessary to send back to you Epaphroditus, my brother, co-worker and fellow soldier, who is also your messenger, whom you sent to take care of my needs. | 25I have thought it necessary to send to you Epaphroditus my brother and fellow worker and fellow soldier, and your messenger and minister to my need, | 25But I thought it necessary to send to you Epaphroditus, my brother and fellow worker and fellow soldier, who is also your messenger and minister to my need; | 25Yet I supposed it necessary to send to you Epaphroditus, my brother, and companion in labour, and fellowsoldier, but your messenger, and he that ministered to my wants. | 25But I considered it necessary to send you Epaphroditus--my brother, coworker, and fellow soldier, as well as your messenger and minister to my need-- |
26For he longs for all of you and is distressed because you heard he was ill. | 26for he has been longing for you all and has been distressed because you heard that he was ill. | 26because he was longing for you all and was distressed because you had heard that he was sick. | 26For he longed after you all, and was full of heaviness, because that ye had heard that he had been sick. | 26since he has been longing for all of you and was distressed because you heard that he was sick. |
27Indeed he was ill, and almost died. But God had mercy on him, and not on him only but also on me, to spare me sorrow upon sorrow. | 27Indeed he was ill, near to death. But God had mercy on him, and not only on him but on me also, lest I should have sorrow upon sorrow. | 27For indeed he was sick to the point of death, but God had mercy on him, and not on him only but also on me, so that I would not have sorrow upon sorrow. | 27For indeed he was sick nigh unto death: but God had mercy on him; and not on him only, but on me also, lest I should have sorrow upon sorrow. | 27Indeed, he was so sick that he nearly died. However, God had mercy on him, and not only on him but also on me, so that I would not have one grief on top of another. |
28Therefore I am all the more eager to send him, so that when you see him again you may be glad and I may have less anxiety. | 28I am the more eager to send him, therefore, that you may rejoice at seeing him again, and that I may be less anxious. | 28Therefore I have sent him all the more eagerly so that when you see him again you may rejoice and I may be less concerned about you. | 28I sent him therefore the more carefully, that, when ye see him again, ye may rejoice, and that I may be the less sorrowful. | 28For this reason, I am very eager to send him so that you may rejoice when you see him again and I may be less anxious. |
29So then, welcome him in the Lord with great joy, and honor people like him, | 29So receive him in the Lord with all joy, and honor such men, | 29Receive him then in the Lord with all joy, and hold men like him in high regard; | 29Receive him therefore in the Lord with all gladness; and hold such in reputation: | 29Therefore, welcome him in the Lord with all joy and hold men like him in honor, |
30because he almost died for the work of Christ. He risked his life to make up for the help you yourselves could not give me. | 30for he nearly died for the work of Christ, risking his life to complete what was lacking in your service to me. | 30because he came close to death for the work of Christ, risking his life to complete what was deficient in your service to me. | 30Because for the work of Christ he was nigh unto death, not regarding his life, to supply your lack of service toward me. | 30because he came close to death for the work of Christ, risking his life to make up what was lacking in your ministry to me. |
