Job Loses His Health

1  וַיְהִ֣י (And there was) הַיּ֔וֹם (a day) וַיָּבֹ֙אוּ֙ (and came) בְּנֵ֣י (the sons) הָֽאֱלֹהִ֔ים (of God) לְהִתְיַצֵּ֖ב (to present themselves) עַל־ (before) יְהוָ֑ה (YHWH), וַיָּב֤וֹא (and came) גַֽם־ (also) הַשָּׂטָן֙ (Satan) בְּתֹכָ֔ם (into their midst) לְהִתְיַצֵּ֖ב (to present himself) עַל־ (before) יְהוָֽה׃ (YHWH).

2  וַיֹּ֤אמֶר (And said) יְהוָה֙ (YHWH) אֶל־ (to) הַשָּׂטָ֔ן (Satan), אֵ֥י (From where) מִזֶּ֖ה (to here) תָּבֹ֑א (have you come)?

וַיַּ֨עַן (And answered) הַשָּׂטָ֤ן (Satan) אֶת־ (-) יְהוָה֙ (YHWH) וַיֹּאמַ֔ר (and said), מִשֻּׁ֣ט (From roaming) בָּאָ֔רֶץ (on the earth) וּמֵהִתְהַלֵּ֖ךְ (and walking back and forth) בָּֽהּ׃ (on it).

3  וַיֹּ֨אמֶר (And said) יְהוָ֜ה (YHWH) אֶל־ (to) הַשָּׂטָ֗ן (Satan), הֲשַׂ֣מְתָּ (Have you set) לִבְּךָ֮ (your heart) אֶל־ (toward) עַבְדִּ֣י (My servant) אִיּוֹב֒ (Job), כִּי֩ (that) אֵ֨ין (there is no one) כָּמֹ֜הוּ (like him) בָּאָ֗רֶץ (on the earth), אִ֣ישׁ (a man) תָּ֧ם (complete) וְיָשָׁ֛ר (and upright), יְרֵ֥א (fearing) אֱלֹהִ֖ים (God) וְסָ֣ר (and turning aside) מֵרָ֑ע (from evil)? וְעֹדֶ֙נּוּ֙ (And still) מַחֲזִ֣יק (he holds firmly) בְּתֻמָּת֔וֹ (to his integrity), וַתְּסִיתֵ֥נִי (although you incited Me) ב֖וֹ (against him) לְבַלְּע֥וֹ (to devour him) חִנָּֽם׃ (without cause).

4  וַיַּ֧עַן (And answered) הַשָּׂטָ֛ן (Satan) אֶת־ (-) יְהוָ֖ה (YHWH) וַיֹּאמַ֑ר (and said), ע֣וֹר (Skin) בְּעַד־ (for) ע֗וֹר (skin) וְכֹל֙ (and all) אֲשֶׁ֣ר (that is) לָאִ֔ישׁ (unto the man) יִתֵּ֖ן (he will give) בְּעַ֥ד (for) נַפְשֽׁוֹ׃ (his life). 5  אוּלָם֙ (But) שְֽׁלַֽח־ (stretch out) נָ֣א (now) יָֽדְךָ֔ (Your hand) וְגַ֥ע (and touch) אֶל־ (upon) עַצְמ֖וֹ (his bone) וְאֶל־ (and upon) בְּשָׂר֑וֹ (his flesh), אִם־ (if) לֹ֥א (not) אֶל־ (unto) פָּנֶ֖יךָ (Your face) יְבָרֲכֶֽךָּ׃ (he will curse You)!

6  וַיֹּ֧אמֶר (And said) יְהוָ֛ה (YHWH) אֶל־ (to) הַשָּׂטָ֖ן (Satan), הִנּ֣וֹ (Behold he is) בְיָדֶ֑ךָ (in your hand), אַ֖ךְ (yet) אֶת־ (-) נַפְשׁ֥וֹ (his life) שְׁמֹֽר׃ (you must spare).

7  וַיֵּצֵא֙ (And went forth) הַשָּׂטָ֔ן (Satan) מֵאֵ֖ת (from) פְּנֵ֣י (the face) יְהוָ֑ה (of YHWH) וַיַּ֤ךְ (and he struck) אֶת־ (-) אִיּוֹב֙ (Job) בִּשְׁחִ֣ין (with boil) רָ֔ע (severe) מִכַּ֥ף (from the sole) רַגְל֖וֹ (of his foot) עַד (and up to) קָדְקֳדֽוֹ׃ (the crown of his head). 8  וַיִּֽקַּֽח־ (And he took) ל֣וֹ (for himself) חֶ֔רֶשׂ (a potsherd) לְהִתְגָּרֵ֖ד (to scrape himself) בּ֑וֹ (with it), וְה֖וּא (and he) יֹשֵׁ֥ב (was sitting) בְּתוֹךְ־ (in the midst) הָאֵֽפֶר׃ (of the ash).

9  וַתֹּ֤אמֶר (And said) לוֹ֙ (to him) אִשְׁתּ֔וֹ (his wife), עֹדְךָ֖ (Still are you) מַחֲזִ֣יק (holding firmly) בְּתֻמָּתֶ֑ךָ (onto your integrity)? בָּרֵ֥ךְ (Curse) אֱלֹהִ֖ים (God) וָמֻֽת׃ (and die)!

10  וַיֹּ֣אמֶר (And he said) אֵלֶ֗יהָ (to her), כְּדַבֵּ֞ר (Like the speaking of) אַחַ֤ת (one) הַנְּבָלוֹת֙ (of the foolish women) תְּדַבֵּ֔רִי (do you speak). גַּ֣ם (Also), אֶת־ (-) הַטּ֗וֹב (shall the good) נְקַבֵּל֙ (we receive) מֵאֵ֣ת (from) הָאֱלֹהִ֔ים (God), וְאֶת־ (and) הָרָ֖ע (the bad) לֹ֣א (not) נְקַבֵּ֑ל (shall we receive)?

בְּכָל־ (In all) זֹ֛את (this) לֹא־ (not) חָטָ֥א (did sin) אִיּ֖וֹב (Job) בִּשְׂפָתָֽיו׃פ (with his lips).

Job’s Three Friends

11  וַֽיִּשְׁמְע֞וּ (And heard) שְׁלֹ֣שֶׁת׀ (three) רֵעֵ֣י (friends) אִיּ֗וֹב (of Job) אֵ֣ת (-) כָּל־ (the all) הָרָעָ֣ה (the evil) הַזֹּאת֮ (this) הַבָּ֣אָה (that had come) עָלָיו֒ (upon him), וַיָּבֹ֙אוּ֙ (and came) אִ֣ישׁ (each man) מִמְּקֹמ֔וֹ (from his place)— אֱלִיפַ֤ז (Eliphaz) הַתֵּימָנִי֙ (the Temanite) וּבִלְדַּ֣ד (and Bildad) הַשּׁוּחִ֔י (the Shuhite) וְצוֹפַ֖ר (and Zophar) הַנַּֽעֲמָתִ֑י (the Naamathite)— וַיִּוָּעֲד֣וּ (and they met) יַחְדָּ֔ו (together) לָב֥וֹא (to come) לָנֽוּד־ (to nod) ל֖וֹ (to him) וּֽלְנַחֲמֽוֹ׃ (and to comfort him).

12  וַיִּשְׂא֨וּ (And they lifted) אֶת־ (-) עֵינֵיהֶ֤ם (their eyes) מֵרָחוֹק֙ (from afar), וְלֹ֣א (and not) הִכִּירֻ֔הוּ (did they recognize him). וַיִּשְׂא֥וּ (And they lifted) קוֹלָ֖ם (their voices) וַיִּבְכּ֑וּ (and wept), וַֽיִּקְרְעוּ֙ (and tore) אִ֣ישׁ (each man) מְעִל֔וֹ (his robe) וַיִּזְרְק֥וּ (and they scattered) עָפָ֛ר (dust) עַל־ (upon) רָאשֵׁיהֶ֖ם (their heads) הַשָּׁמָֽיְמָה׃ (toward the heavens). 13  וַיֵּשְׁב֤וּ (And they sat down) אִתּוֹ֙ (with him) לָאָ֔רֶץ (on the ground) שִׁבְעַ֥ת (seven) יָמִ֖ים (days) וְשִׁבְעַ֣ת (and seven) לֵיל֑וֹת (nights), וְאֵין־ (and not) דֹּבֵ֤ר (was one speaking) אֵלָיו֙ (to him) דָּבָ֔ר (a word), כִּ֣י (for) רָא֔וּ (they saw) כִּֽי־ (that) גָדַ֥ל (was great) הַכְּאֵ֖ב (the pain) מְאֹֽד׃ (very).
