Jehoram Reigns in Judah
(2 Kings 8:16–19)

1  וַיִּשְׁכַּ֤ב (And rested) יְהֽוֹשָׁפָט֙ (Jehoshaphat) עִם־ (with) אֲבֹתָ֔יו (his fathers) וַיִּקָּבֵ֥ר (and was buried) עִם־ (with) אֲבֹתָ֖יו (his fathers) בְּעִ֣יר (in the City) דָּוִ֑יד (of David). וַיִּמְלֹ֛ךְ (And reigned) יְהוֹרָ֥ם (Jehoram) בְּנ֖וֹ (his son) תַּחְתָּֽיו׃ (in his place).

2  וְלֽוֹ־ (And unto him were) אַחִ֞ים (brothers), בְּנֵ֣י (the sons) יְהוֹשָׁפָ֗ט (of Jehoshaphat): עֲזַרְיָ֤ה (Azariah), וִֽיחִיאֵל֙ (and Jehiel), וּזְכַרְיָ֣הוּ (and Zechariah), וַעֲזַרְיָ֔הוּ (and Azariah), וּמִיכָאֵ֖ל (and Michael), וּשְׁפַטְיָ֑הוּ (and Shephatiah). כָּל־ (All) אֵ֕לֶּה (these were) בְּנֵ֥י (the sons) יְהוֹשָׁפָ֖ט (of Jehoshaphat) מֶ֥לֶךְ־ (king) יִשְׂרָאֵֽל׃ (of Israel). 3  וַיִּתֵּ֣ן (And gave) לָהֶ֣ם׀ (them) אֲ֠בִיהֶם (their father) מַתָּנ֨וֹת (gifts) רַבּ֜וֹת (great) לְכֶ֤סֶף (of silver), וּלְזָהָב֙ (and of gold), וּלְמִגְדָּנ֔וֹת (and of precious things), עִם־ (with) עָרֵ֥י (cities) מְצֻר֖וֹת (fortified) בִּֽיהוּדָ֑ה (in Judah). וְאֶת־ (And) הַמַּמְלָכָ֛ה (the kingdom) נָתַ֥ן (he gave) לִֽיהוֹרָ֖ם (to Jehoram), כִּי־ (because) ה֥וּא (he was) הַבְּכֽוֹר׃פ (the firstborn).

4  וַיָּ֨קָם (And rose) יְהוֹרָ֜ם (Jehoram) עַל־ (over) מַמְלֶ֤כַת (the kingdom) אָבִיו֙ (of his father), וַיִּתְחַזַּ֔ק (and he strengthened himself) וַיַּהֲרֹ֥ג (and killed) אֶת־ (-) כָּל־ (all) אֶחָ֖יו (his brothers) בֶּחָ֑רֶב (with the sword), וְגַ֖ם (and also) מִשָּׂרֵ֥י (some of the princes) יִשְׂרָאֵֽל׃ (of Israel). 5  בֶּן־ (A son) שְׁלֹשִׁ֥ים (of thirty) וּשְׁתַּ֛יִם (and two) שָׁנָ֖ה (years) יְהוֹרָ֣ם (Jehoram was) בְּמָלְכ֑וֹ (in his reigning), וּשְׁמוֹנֶ֣ה (and eight) שָׁנִ֔ים (years) מָלַ֖ךְ (he reigned) בִּירוּשָׁלִָֽם׃ (in Jerusalem).

6  וַיֵּ֜לֶךְ (And he walked) בְּדֶ֣רֶךְ׀ (in the way) מַלְכֵ֣י (of the kings) יִשְׂרָאֵ֗ל (of Israel), כַּאֲשֶׁ֤ר (as) עָשׂוּ֙ (had done) בֵּ֣ית (the house) אַחְאָ֔ב (of Ahab). כִּ֚י (For) בַּת־ (a daughter) אַחְאָ֔ב (of Ahab) הָ֥יְתָה (was) לּ֖וֹ (unto him) אִשָּׁ֑ה (as a wife), וַיַּ֥עַשׂ (and he did) הָרַ֖ע (evil) בְּעֵינֵ֥י (in the eyes) יְהוָֽה׃ (of YHWH). 7  וְלֹא־ (And not) אָבָ֣ה (was willing) יְהוָ֗ה (YHWH) לְהַשְׁחִית֙ (destroy) אֶת־ (-) בֵּ֣ית (the house) דָּוִ֔יד (of David), לְמַ֣עַן (on account) הַבְּרִ֔ית (of the covenant) אֲשֶׁ֥ר (that) כָּרַ֖ת (He had cut) לְדָוִ֑יד (with David), וְכַאֲשֶׁ֣ר (and since) אָמַ֗ר (He had promised) לָתֵ֨ת (to give) ל֥וֹ (to him) נִ֛יר (a lamp), וּלְבָנָ֖יו (and to his sons) כָּל־ (all) הַיָּמִֽים׃ (the days).

8  בְּיָמָיו֙ (In his days) פָּשַׁ֣ע (rebelled) אֱד֔וֹם (Edom) מִתַּ֖חַת (against) יַד־ (the hand) יְהוּדָ֑ה (of Judah), וַיַּמְלִ֥יכוּ (and they caused to reign) עֲלֵיהֶ֖ם (over themselves) מֶֽלֶךְ׃ (a king). 9  וַיַּֽעֲבֹ֤ר (And went out) יְהוֹרָם֙ (Jehoram) עִם־ (with) שָׂרָ֔יו (his officers) וְכָל־ (and all) הָרֶ֖כֶב (the chariots) עִמּ֑וֹ (with him), וַיְהִי֙ (and he) קָ֣ם (rose) לַ֔יְלָה (by night), וַיַּ֗ךְ (and struck) אֶת־ (-) אֱדוֹם֙ (the Edomites) הַסּוֹבֵ֣ב (who were coming around) אֵלָ֔יו (against him), וְאֵ֖ת (and) שָׂרֵ֥י (the captains) הָרָֽכֶב׃ (of the chariots).

10  וַיִּפְשַׁ֨ע (And has been in rebellion) אֱד֜וֹם (Edom) מִתַּ֣חַת (against) יַד־ (the hand) יְהוּדָ֗ה (of Judah) עַ֚ד (to) הַיּ֣וֹם (the day) הַזֶּ֔ה (this). אָ֣ז (Then) תִּפְשַׁ֥ע (revolted) לִבְנָ֛ה (Libnah) בָּעֵ֥ת (at the time) הַהִ֖יא (that) מִתַּ֣חַת (against) יָד֑וֹ (his rule), כִּ֣י (because) עָזַ֔ב (he had forsaken) אֶת־ (-) יְהוָ֖ה (YHWH) אֱלֹהֵ֥י (God) אֲבֹתָֽיו׃ (of his fathers).

11  גַּם־ (Moreover) ה֥וּא (he) עָשָֽׂה־ (made) בָמ֖וֹת (high places) בְּהָרֵ֣י (in the hill country) יְהוּדָ֑ה (of Judah), וַיֶּ֙זֶן֙ (and he caused to prostitute themselves) אֶת־ (-) יֹשְׁבֵ֣י (the dwellers) יְרוּשָׁלִַ֔ם (of Jerusalem) וַיַּדַּ֖ח (and he drove away) אֶת־ (-) יְהוּדָֽה׃פ (Judah).

Elijah’s Letter to Jehoram

12  וַיָּבֹ֤א (And came) אֵלָיו֙ (to him) מִכְתָּ֔ב (a letter) מֵֽאֵלִיָּ֥הוּ (from Elijah) הַנָּבִ֖יא (the prophet), לֵאמֹ֑ר (saying):

כֹּ֣ה׀ (Thus) אָמַ֣ר (says) יְהוָ֗ה (YHWH) אֱלֹהֵי֙ (God) דָּוִ֣יד (of David) אָבִ֔יךָ (your father):

תַּ֗חַת (Because) אֲשֶׁ֤ר (that) לֹֽא־ (not) הָלַ֙כְתָּ֙ (you have walked) בְּדַרְכֵי֙ (in the ways) יְהוֹשָׁפָ֣ט (of Jehoshaphat) אָבִ֔יךָ (your father) וּבְדַרְכֵ֖י (and in the ways) אָסָ֥א (of Asa) מֶֽלֶךְ־ (king) יְהוּדָֽה׃ (of Judah), 13  וַתֵּ֗לֶךְ (and you have walked) בְּדֶ֙רֶךְ֙ (in the way) מַלְכֵ֣י (of the kings) יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל (of Israel) וַתַּזְנֶ֤ה (and have caused to prostitute themselves) אֶת־ (-) יְהוּדָה֙ (Judah) וְאֶת־ (and) יֹשְׁבֵ֣י (the dwellers) יְרוּשָׁלִַ֔ם (of Jerusalem), כְּהַזְנ֖וֹת (like the prostitution) בֵּ֣ית (of the house) אַחְאָ֑ב (of Ahab). וְגַ֨ם (And also) אֶת־ (-) אַחֶ֧יךָ (your brothers), בֵית־ (the house) אָבִ֛יךָ (of your father) הַטּוֹבִ֥ים (who are better) מִמְּךָ֖ (than you), הָרָֽגְתָּ׃ (you have killed).

14  הִנֵּ֣ה (Behold), יְהוָ֗ה (YHWH) נֹגֵ֛ף (will strike) מַגֵּפָ֥ה (with an affliction) גְדוֹלָ֖ה (great) בְּעַמֶּ֑ךָ (your people), וּבְבָנֶ֥יךָ (and your children), וּבְנָשֶׁ֖יךָ (and your wives), וּבְכָל־ (and all) רְכוּשֶֽׁךָ׃ (your possessions), 15  וְאַתָּ֛ה (and you) בָּחֳלָיִ֥ים (with sicknesses) רַבִּ֖ים (many), בְּמַחֲלֵ֣ה (with disease) מֵעֶ֑יךָ (of your bowels), עַד־ (until) יֵצְא֤וּ (come out) מֵעֶ֙יךָ֙ (your intestines) מִן־ (by reason) הַחֹ֔לִי (of the sickness) יָמִ֖ים (days) עַל־ (upon) יָמִֽים׃ (days).

Jehoram’s Disease and Death

16  וַיָּ֨עַר (And stirred up) יְהוָ֜ה (YHWH) עַל־ (against) יְהוֹרָ֗ם (Jehoram) אֵ֣ת (-) ר֤וּחַ (the spirit) הַפְּלִשְׁתִּים֙ (of the Philistines) וְהָ֣עַרְבִ֔ים (and of the Arabs) אֲשֶׁ֖ר (who were) עַל־ (upon) יַ֥ד (the hand) כּוּשִֽׁים׃ (of the Cushites), 17  וַיַּעֲל֤וּ (and they came up) בִֽיהוּדָה֙ (into Judah) וַיִּבְקָע֔וּהָ (and invaded it) וַיִּשְׁבּ֗וּ (and carried away) אֵ֤ת (-) כָּל־ (all) הָרְכוּשׁ֙ (the possessions) הַנִּמְצָ֣א (that were found) לְבֵית־ (in the house) הַמֶּ֔לֶךְ (of the king), וְגַם־ (and also) בָּנָ֖יו (his sons) וְנָשָׁ֑יו (and his wives), וְלֹ֤א (so that not) נִשְׁאַר־ (there was left) לוֹ֙ (to him) בֵּ֔ן (a son) כִּ֥י (except) אִם־ (but) יְהוֹאָחָ֖ז (Jehoahaz) קְטֹ֥ן (the youngest) בָּנָֽיו׃ (of his sons).

18  וְאַחֲרֵ֖י (And after) כָּל־ (all) זֹ֑את (this), נְגָפ֨וֹ (struck him) יְהוָ֧ה׀ (YHWH) בְּמֵעָ֛יו (in his intestines) לָחֳלִ֖י (with a disease) לְאֵ֥ין (of no) מַרְפֵּֽא׃ (healing). 19  וַיְהִ֣י (And it came to pass) לְיָמִ֣ים׀ (from days) מִיָּמִ֡ים (to days) וּכְעֵת֩ (and at the time) צֵ֨את (of the going out) הַקֵּ֜ץ (of the end) לְיָמִ֣ים (of years) שְׁנַ֗יִם (two), יָצְא֤וּ (that came out) מֵעָיו֙ (his intestines) עִם־ (because) חָלְי֔וֹ (of his sickness). וַיָּ֖מָת (And he died) בְּתַחֲלֻאִ֣ים (of diseases) רָעִ֑ים (evil), וְלֹא־ (and not) עָ֨שׂוּ (made) ל֥וֹ (for him) עַמּ֛וֹ (his people) שְׂרֵפָ֖ה (a burning) כִּשְׂרֵפַ֥ת (like the burning) אֲבֹתָֽיו׃ (for his fathers).

20  בֶּן־ (A son) שְׁלֹשִׁ֤ים (of thirty) וּשְׁתַּ֙יִם֙ (and two) הָיָ֣ה (He was) בְמָלְכ֔וֹ (in his reigning), וּשְׁמוֹנֶ֣ה (and eight) שָׁנִ֔ים (years) מָלַ֖ךְ (he reigned) בִּירוּשָׁלִָ֑ם (in Jerusalem), וַיֵּ֙לֶךְ֙ (and departed) בְּלֹ֣א (without) חֶמְדָּ֔ה (desire), וַֽיִּקְבְּרֻ֙הוּ֙ (and they buried him) בְּעִ֣יר (in the City) דָּוִ֔יד (of David), וְלֹ֖א (not) בְּקִבְר֥וֹת (in the tombs) הַמְּלָכִֽים׃ (of the kings).
