Ahaziah Reigns in Judah
(2 Kings 8:25–29)

1  וַיַּמְלִיכוּ֩ (And made king) יוֹשְׁבֵ֨י (the dwellers) יְרוּשָׁלִַ֜ם (of Jerusalem) אֶת־ (-) אֲחַזְיָ֨הוּ (Ahaziah) בְנ֤וֹ (his son) הַקָּטֹן֙ (youngest) תַּחְתָּ֔יו (in his place), כִּ֤י (for) כָל־ (all) הָרִאשֹׁנִים֙ (the older sons) הָרַ֣ג (had killed) הַגְּד֔וּד (the raiders) הַבָּ֥א (who came in) בָֽעַרְבִ֖ים (with the Arabs) לַֽמַּחֲנֶ֑ה (to the camp). וַיִּמְלֹ֛ךְ (And reigned) אֲחַזְיָ֥הוּ (Ahaziah) בֶן־ (son) יְהוֹרָ֖ם (of Joram) מֶ֥לֶךְ (king) יְהוּדָֽה׃פ (of Judah). 2  בֶּן־ (A son) אַרְבָּעִ֨ים (of forty) וּשְׁתַּ֤יִם (and two) שָׁנָה֙ (years) אֲחַזְיָ֣הוּ (Ahaziah was) בְמָלְכ֔וֹ (in his reigning), וְשָׁנָ֣ה (and year) אַחַ֔ת (one) מָלַ֖ךְ (he reigned) בִּֽירוּשָׁלִָ֑ם (in Jerusalem). וְשֵׁ֣ם (And the name) אִמּ֔וֹ (of His mother) עֲתַלְיָ֖הוּ (was Athaliah) בַּת־ (daughter) עָמְרִֽי׃ (of Omri).

3  גַּם־ (Also) ה֣וּא (he) הָלַ֔ךְ (walked) בְּדַרְכֵ֖י (in the ways) בֵּ֣ית (of the house) אַחְאָ֑ב (of Ahab), כִּ֥י (for) אִמּ֛וֹ (his mother) הָיְתָ֥ה (was) יֽוֹעַצְתּ֖וֹ (his counselor) לְהַרְשִֽׁיעַ׃ (in acting wickedly). 4  וַיַּ֧עַשׂ (And he did) הָרַ֛ע (evil) בְּעֵינֵ֥י (in the eyes) יְהוָ֖ה (of YHWH), כְּבֵ֣ית (like the house) אַחְאָ֑ב (of Ahab), כִּי־ (for) הֵ֜מָּה (they) הָֽיוּ־ (were) ל֣וֹ (his) יֽוֹעֲצִ֗ים (counselors) אַחֲרֵ֛י (after) מ֥וֹת (the death) אָבִ֖יו (of his father), לְמַשְׁחִ֥ית (for destruction) לֽוֹ׃ (to him).

5  גַּ֣ם (Also) בַּעֲצָתָם֮ (in their counsel) הָלַךְ֒ (he walked), וַיֵּלֶךְ֩ (and he went) אֶת־ (with) יְהוֹרָ֨ם (Jehoram) בֶּן־ (son) אַחְאָ֜ב (of Ahab) מֶ֣לֶךְ (king) יִשְׂרָאֵ֗ל (of Israel) לַמִּלְחָמָ֛ה (to war) עַל־ (against) חֲזָאֵ֥ל (Hazael) מֶֽלֶךְ־ (king) אֲרָ֖ם (of Aram) בְּרָמ֣וֹת (at Ramoth-) גִּלְעָ֑ד (gilead). וַיַּכּ֥וּ (And wounded) הָֽרַמִּ֖ים (the Aramaeans) אֶת־ (-) יוֹרָֽם׃ (Jehoram). 6  וַיָּ֜שָׁב (And he returned) לְהִתְרַפֵּ֣א (to recover) בְיִזְרְעֶ֗אל (to Jezreel) כִּ֤י (from) הַמַּכִּים֙ (the wounds) אֲשֶׁ֣ר (that) הִכֻּ֣הוּ (he had received) בָֽרָמָ֔ה (at Ramah), בְּהִלָּ֣חֲמ֔וֹ (when he fought) אֶת־ (against) חֲזָהאֵ֖ל (Hazael) מֶ֣לֶךְ (king) אֲרָ֑ם (of Aram). וַעֲזַרְיָ֨הוּ (And Azariah) בֶן־ (son) יְהוֹרָ֜ם (of Jehoram) מֶ֣לֶךְ (king) יְהוּדָ֗ה (of Judah) יָרַ֡ד (went down) לִרְא֞וֹת (to see) אֶת־ (-) יְהוֹרָ֧ם (Jehoram) בֶּן־ (son) אַחְאָ֛ב (of Ahab) בְּיִזְרְעֶ֖אל (in Jezreel), כִּי־ (because) חֹלֶ֥ה (was sick) הֽוּא׃ (he).

7  וּמֵֽאֱלֹהִ֗ים (And from God) הָיְתָה֙ (was) תְּבוּסַ֣ת (the downfall) אֲחַזְיָ֔הוּ (of Ahaziah) לָב֖וֹא (for his coming) אֶל־ (to) יוֹרָ֑ם (Joram). וּבְבֹא֗וֹ (And when he came) יָצָ֤א (he went out) עִם־ (with) יְהוֹרָם֙ (Jehoram) אֶל־ (against) יֵה֣וּא (Jehu) בֶן־ (son) נִמְשִׁ֔י (of Nimshi), אֲשֶׁ֣ר (whom) מְשָׁח֣וֹ (had anointed) יְהוָ֔ה (YHWH) לְהַכְרִ֖ית (to cut off) אֶת־ (-) בֵּ֥ית (the house) אַחְאָֽב׃ (of Ahab).

Jehu Kills the Princes of Judah
(2 Kings 9:14–29)

8  וַיְהִ֕י (And it came to pass), כְּהִשָּׁפֵ֥ט (in executing judgment) יֵה֖וּא (Jehu) עִם־ (on) בֵּ֣ית (the house) אַחְאָ֑ב (of Ahab), וַיִּמְצָא֩ (that he found) אֶת־ (-) שָׂרֵ֨י (the princes) יְהוּדָ֜ה (of Judah) וּבְנֵ֨י (and the sons) אֲחֵ֧י (of brothers) אֲחַזְיָ֛הוּ (of Ahaziah) מְשָׁרְתִ֥ים (who served) לַאֲחַזְיָ֖הוּ (Ahaziah), וַיַּהַרְגֵֽם׃ (and he killed them).

9  וַיְבַקֵּשׁ֩ (And he searched for) אֶת־ (-) אֲחַזְיָ֨הוּ (Ahaziah), וַֽיִּלְכְּדֻ֜הוּ (and they caught him), וְה֧וּא (and he) מִתְחַבֵּ֣א (was hiding) בְשֹֽׁמְר֗וֹן (in Samaria). וַיְבִאֻ֣הוּ (And they brought him) אֶל־ (to) יֵהוּא֮ (Jehu), וַיְמִתֻהוּ֒ (and they killed him) וַֽיִּקְבְּרֻ֔הוּ (and buried him), כִּ֤י (for) אָֽמְרוּ֙ (they said), בֶּן־ (Son) יְהוֹשָׁפָ֣ט (of Jehoshaphat) ה֔וּא (he is), אֲשֶׁר־ (who) דָּרַ֥שׁ (sought) אֶת־ (-) יְהוָ֖ה (YHWH) בְּכָל־ (with all) לְבָב֑וֹ (his heart).

וְאֵין֙ (And none) לְבֵ֣ית (from the house) אֲחַזְיָ֔הוּ (of Ahaziah) לַעְצֹ֥ר (was there to retain) כֹּ֖חַ (power) לְמַמְלָכָֽה׃ (over the kingdom).

Athaliah and Joash
(2 Kings 11:1–3)

10  וַעֲתַלְיָ֙הוּ֙ (And Athaliah) אֵ֣ם (the mother) אֲחַזְיָ֔הוּ (of Ahaziah) רָאֲתָ֖ה (saw) כִּ֣י (that) מֵ֣ת (was dead) בְּנָ֑הּ (her son), וַתָּ֗קָם (and she arose) וַתְּדַבֵּ֛ר (and destroyed) אֶת־ (-) כָּל־ (all) זֶ֥רַע (the seed) הַמַּמְלָכָ֖ה (of the kingdom) לְבֵ֥ית (of the house) יְהוּדָֽה׃ (of Judah). 11  וַתִּקַּח֩ (And took) יְהוֹשַׁבְעַ֨ת (Jehoshabeath) בַּת־ (the daughter) הַמֶּ֜לֶךְ (of the king) אֶת־ (-) יוֹאָ֣שׁ (Joash) בֶּן־ (son) אֲחַזְיָ֗הוּ (of Ahaziah), וַתִּגְנֹ֤ב (and she stole away) אֹתוֹ֙ (him) מִתּ֤וֹךְ (from the midst) בְּנֵֽי־ (of the sons) הַמֶּ֙לֶךְ֙ (of the king) הַמּ֣וּמָתִ֔ים (who were being killed), וַתִּתֵּ֥ן (and she put) אֹת֛וֹ (him) וְאֶת־ (and) מֵֽינִקְתּ֖וֹ (his nurse) בַּחֲדַ֣ר (in) הַמִּטּ֑וֹת (a bedroom). וַתַּסְתִּירֵ֡הוּ (And hid him) יְהוֹשַׁבְעַ֣ת (Jehoshabeath) בַּת־ (the daughter) הַמֶּ֣לֶךְ (of King) יְהוֹרָ֡ם (Joram) אֵשֶׁת֩ (the wife) יְהוֹיָדָ֨ע (of Jehoiada) הַכֹּהֵ֜ן (the priest)— כִּ֣י (for) הִיא֩ (she) הָיְתָ֨ה (was) אֲח֧וֹת (the sister) אֲחַזְיָ֛הוּ (of Ahaziah)— מִפְּנֵ֥י (from the face) עֲתַלְיָ֖הוּ (of Athaliah), וְלֹ֥א (so that not) הֱמִיתָֽתְהוּ׃ (she did kill him).

12  וַיְהִ֤י (And he was) אִתָּם֙ (with them) בְּבֵ֣ית (in the house) הָֽאֱלֹהִ֔ים (of God) מִתְחַבֵּ֖א (hiding) שֵׁ֣שׁ (six) שָׁנִ֖ים (years), וַעֲתַלְיָ֖ה (and Athaliah) מֹלֶ֥כֶת (reigned) עַל־ (over) הָאָֽרֶץ׃פ (the land).
