Solomon’s Princes

1  וַֽיְהִי֙ (And was) הַמֶּ֣לֶךְ (king) שְׁלֹמֹ֔ה (Solomon) מֶ֖לֶךְ (King) עַל־ (over) כָּל־ (all) יִשְׂרָאֵֽל׃ס (Israel). 2  וְאֵ֥לֶּה (And these were) הַשָּׂרִ֖ים (officials) אֲשֶׁר־ (who were) ל֑וֹ (unto him):

עֲזַרְיָ֥הוּ (Azariah) בֶן־ (son) צָד֖וֹק (of Zadok), הַכֹּהֵֽן׃ס (the priest);

3  אֱלִיחֹ֧רֶף (Elihoreph) וַאֲחִיָּ֛ה (and Ahijah) בְּנֵ֥י (the sons) שִׁישָׁ֖א (of Shisha), סֹפְרִ֑ים (scribes);

יְהוֹשָׁפָ֥ט (Jehoshaphat) בֶּן־ (son) אֲחִיל֖וּד (of Ahilud), הַמַּזְכִּֽיר׃ (the recorder).

4  וּבְנָיָ֥הוּ (And Benaiah) בֶן־ (son) יְהוֹיָדָ֖ע (of Jehoiada), עַל־ (over) הַצָּבָ֑א (the army);

וְצָד֥וֹק (and Zadok) וְאֶבְיָתָ֖ר (and Abiathar), כֹּהֲנִֽים׃ס (the priests);

5  וַעֲזַרְיָ֥הוּ (and Azariah) בֶן־ (son) נָתָ֖ן (of Nathan), עַל־ (over) הַנִּצָּבִ֑ים (the officers);

וְזָב֧וּד (and Zabud) בֶּן־ (son) נָתָ֛ן (of Nathan), כֹּהֵ֖ן (a priest), רֵעֶ֥ה (friend) הַמֶּֽלֶךְ׃ (of the king).

6  וַאֲחִישָׁ֖ר (And Ahishar), עַל־ (over) הַבָּ֑יִת (the house);

וַאֲדֹנִירָ֥ם (and Adoniram) בֶּן־ (son) עַבְדָּ֖א (of Abda), עַל־ (over) הַמַּֽס׃ס (the forced labor).

Solomon’s Twelve Officers

7  וְלִשְׁלֹמֹ֞ה (And had Solomon) שְׁנֵים־ (two) עָשָׂ֤ר (and ten) נִצָּבִים֙ (governors) עַל־ (over) כָּל־ (all) יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל (Israel), וְכִלְכְּל֥וּ (and they provided food) אֶת־ (for) הַמֶּ֖לֶךְ (the king) וְאֶת־ (and) בֵּית֑וֹ (his house), חֹ֧דֶשׁ (one month) בַּשָּׁנָ֛ה (of the year) יִהְיֶ֥ה (was) עַל־ (upon) אֶחָד (each one) לְכַלְכֵּֽל׃ס (for provision). 8  וְאֵ֣לֶּה (And these are) שְׁמוֹתָ֔ם (their names);

בֶּן־ (Ben-) ח֖וּר (hur) בְּהַ֥ר (in the hill country) אֶפְרָֽיִם׃ס (of Ephraim);

9  בֶּן־ (Ben-) דֶּ֛קֶר (deker) בְּמָקַ֥ץ (in Makaz), וּבְשַֽׁעַלְבִ֖ים (and Shaalbim) וּבֵ֣ית (and Beth-) שָׁ֑מֶשׁ (Shemesh) וְאֵיל֖וֹן (and Elon-) בֵּ֥ית (beth-) חָנָֽן׃ס (and hanan);

10  בֶּן־ (Ben-) חֶ֖סֶד (hesed), בָּֽאֲרֻבּ֑וֹת (in Arubboth) ל֥וֹ (to him) שֹׂכֹ֖ה (was Sochoh) וְכָל־ (and all) אֶ֥רֶץ (the land) חֵֽפֶר׃ס (of Hepher))

11  בֶּן־ (Ben-) אֲבִֽינָדָ֖ב (abinadab) כָּל־ (in all) נָ֣פַת (Naphath-) דֹּ֑אר (dor) טָפַת֙ (Taphath) בַּת־ (the daughter) שְׁלֹמֹ֔ה (of Solomon) הָ֥יְתָה (was) לּ֖וֹ (unto him) לְאִשָּֽׁה׃ס (as wife))

12  בַּֽעֲנָא֙ (Baana) בֶּן־ (son) אֲחִיל֔וּד (of Ahilud) תַּעְנַ֖ךְ (in Taanach) וּמְגִדּ֑וֹ (and Megiddo) וְכָל־ (and in all) בֵּ֣ית (Beth-) שְׁאָ֡ן (shean), אֲשֶׁר֩ (which is) אֵ֨צֶל (beside) צָרְתַ֜נָה (Zaretan) מִתַּ֣חַת (beneath) לְיִזְרְעֶ֗אל (Jezreel), מִבֵּ֤ית (from Beth-) שְׁאָן֙ (shean) עַ֚ד (to) אָבֵ֣ל (Abel-) מְחוֹלָ֔ה (meholah), עַ֖ד (to) מֵעֵ֥בֶר (beyond) לְיָקְמֳעָֽם׃ס (Jokmeam);

13  בֶּן־ (Ben-) גֶּ֖בֶר (geber) בְּרָמֹ֣ת (in Ramoth-) גִּלְעָ֑ד (gilead) ל֡וֹ (unto him were) חַוֺּת֩ (the towns) יָאִ֨יר (of Jair) בֶּן־ (son) מְנַשֶּׁ֜ה (of Manasseh) אֲשֶׁ֣ר (that were) בַּגִּלְעָ֗ד (in Gilead); ל֚וֹ (unto him was) חֶ֤בֶל (the region) אַרְגֹּב֙ (of Argob) אֲשֶׁ֣ר (that is) בַּבָּשָׁ֔ן (in Bashan), שִׁשִּׁים֙ (sixty) עָרִ֣ים (cities) גְּדֹל֔וֹת (large) חוֹמָ֖ה (with walls) וּבְרִ֥יחַ (and bars) נְחֹֽשֶׁת׃ס (bronze))

14  אֲחִֽינָדָ֥ב (Ahinadab) בֶּן־ (son) עִדֹּ֖א (of Iddo) מַחֲנָֽיְמָה׃ (in Mahanaim);

15  אֲחִימַ֖עַץ (Ahimaaz) בְּנַפְתָּלִ֑י (in Naphtali) גַּם־ (also) ה֗וּא (he) לָקַ֛ח (took) אֶת־ (-) בָּשְׂמַ֥ת (Basemath) בַּת־ (the daughter) שְׁלֹמֹ֖ה (of Solomon) לְאִשָּֽׁה׃ (as wife))

16  בַּֽעֲנָא֙ (Baanah) בֶּן־ (son) חוּשָׁ֔י (of Hushai) בְּאָשֵׁ֖ר (in Asher) וּבְעָלֽוֹת׃ס (and in Aloth);

17  יְהוֹשָׁפָ֥ט (Jehoshaphat) בֶּן־ (son) פָּר֖וּחַ (of Paruah), בְּיִשָׂשכָֽר׃ס (in Issachar);

18  שִׁמְעִ֥י (Shimei) בֶן־ (son) אֵלָ֖א (of Ela) בְּבִנְיָמִֽן׃ס (in Benjamin);

19  גֶּ֥בֶר (Geber) בֶּן־ (son) אֻרִ֖י (of Uri) בְּאֶ֣רֶץ (in the land) גִּלְעָ֑ד (of Gilead), אֶ֜רֶץ (the land) סִיח֣וֹן׀ (of Sihon) מֶ֣לֶךְ (king) הָאֱמֹרִ֗י (of the Amorite) וְעֹג֙ (and of Og) מֶ֣לֶךְ (king) הַבָּשָׁ֔ן (of Bashan).

וּנְצִ֥יב (And the governor) אֶחָ֖ד (one) אֲשֶׁ֥ר (who was) בָּאָֽרֶץ׃ (in the land).

Solomon’s Prosperity

20  יְהוּדָ֤ה (Judah) וְיִשְׂרָאֵל֙ (and Israel) רַבִּ֔ים (were as numerous) כַּח֥וֹל (as the sand) אֲשֶׁר־ (that is) עַל־ (by) הַיָּ֖ם (the sea) לָרֹ֑ב (in multitude), אֹכְלִ֥ים (eating) וְשֹׁתִ֖ים (and drinking) וּשְׂמֵחִֽים׃ (and rejoicing). 21  וּשְׁלֹמֹ֗ה (And Solomon) הָיָ֤ה (was) מוֹשֵׁל֙ (reigning) בְּכָל־ (over all) הַמַּמְלָכ֔וֹת (kingdoms) מִן־ (from) הַנָּהָר֙ (the River) אֶ֣רֶץ (to the land) פְּלִשְׁתִּ֔ים (of the Philistines), וְעַ֖ד (and as far as) גְּב֣וּל (the border) מִצְרָ֑יִם (of Egypt). מַגִּשִׁ֥ים (They brought) מִנְחָ֛ה (tribute) וְעֹבְדִ֥ים (and served) אֶת־ (-) שְׁלֹמֹ֖ה (Solomon) כָּל־ (all) יְמֵ֥י (the days) חַיָּֽיו׃פ (of his life).

22  וַיְהִ֥י (And was) לֶֽחֶם־ (the provision) שְׁלֹמֹ֖ה (of Solomon) לְי֣וֹם (for day) אֶחָ֑ד (one) שְׁלֹשִׁ֥ים (thirty) כֹּר֙ (cors) סֹ֔לֶת (of fine flour), וְשִׁשִּׁ֥ים (and sixty) כֹּ֖ר (cors) קָֽמַח׃ (of meal), 23  עֲשָׂרָ֨ה (ten) בָקָ֜ר (oxen) בְּרִאִ֗ים (fat), וְעֶשְׂרִ֥ים (and twenty) בָּקָ֛ר (oxen) רְעִ֖י (from the pastures), וּמֵ֣אָה (and a hundred) צֹ֑אן (sheep), לְ֠בַד (besides) מֵֽאַיָּ֤ל (deer), וּצְבִי֙ (and gazelles), וְיַחְמ֔וּר (and roebucks), וּבַרְבֻּרִ֖ים (and fowl) אֲבוּסִֽים׃ (fattened). 24  כִּי־ (For) ה֞וּא (he) רֹדֶ֣ה׀ (had dominion) בְּכָל־ (over all) עֵ֣בֶר (on this side) הַנָּהָ֗ר (of the River), מִתִּפְסַח֙ (from Tiphsah) וְעַד־ (and to) עַזָּ֔ה (Gaza), בְּכָל־ (over all) מַלְכֵ֖י (the kings) עֵ֣בֶר (on this side) הַנָּהָ֑ר (of the River). וְשָׁל֗וֹם (And peace) הָ֥יָה (was) ל֛וֹ (unto him) מִכָּל־ (on all) עֲבָרָ֖יו (his sides) מִסָּבִֽיב׃ (all around). 25  וַיֵּשֶׁב֩ (And dwelt) יְהוּדָ֨ה (Judah) וְיִשְׂרָאֵ֜ל (and Israel) לָבֶ֗טַח (in safety), אִ֣ישׁ (each man) תַּ֤חַת (under) גַּפְנוֹ֙ (his vine) וְתַ֣חַת (and) תְּאֵֽנָת֔וֹ (his fig tree), מִדָּ֖ן (from Dan) וְעַד־ (and to) בְּאֵ֣ר (Beer-) שָׁ֑בַע (sheba), כֹּ֖ל (all) יְמֵ֥י (the days) שְׁלֹמֹֽה׃ס (of Solomon).

26  וַיְהִ֣י (And had) לִשְׁלֹמֹ֗ה (Solomon) אַרְבָּעִ֥ים (forty) אֶ֛לֶף (thousand) אֻרְוֺ֥ת (stalls) סוּסִ֖ים (of horses) לְמֶרְכָּב֑וֹ (for his chariots), וּשְׁנֵים־ (and two) עָשָׂ֥ר (and ten) אֶ֖לֶף (thousand) פָּרָשִֽׁים׃ (horses). 27  וְכִלְכְּלוּ֩ (And provided food) הַנִּצָּבִ֨ים (governors) הָאֵ֜לֶּה (these) אֶת־ (for) הַמֶּ֣לֶךְ (King) שְׁלֹמֹ֗ה (Solomon) וְאֵ֧ת (and for) כָּל־ (all) הַקָּרֵ֛ב (who came) אֶל־ (to) שֻׁלְחַ֥ן (the table) הַמֶּֽלֶךְ־ (of King) שְׁלֹמֹ֖ה (Solomon), אִ֣ישׁ (each man) חָדְשׁ֑וֹ (in his month). לֹ֥א (Nothing) יְעַדְּר֖וּ (was lacking) דָּבָֽר׃ (in their supply). 28  וְהַשְּׂעֹרִ֣ים (And the barley) וְהַתֶּ֔בֶן (and the straw) לַסּוּסִ֖ים (for the horses) וְלָרָ֑כֶשׁ (and the steeds) יָבִ֗אוּ (they brought) אֶל־ (to) הַמָּקוֹם֙ (the place) אֲשֶׁ֣ר (where) יִֽהְיֶה־ (it should be) שָּׁ֔ם (there), אִ֖ישׁ (each man) כְּמִשְׁפָּטֽוֹ׃ס (according to his charge).

Solomon’s Wisdom

29  וַיִּתֵּן֩ (And gave) אֱלֹהִ֨ים (God) חָכְמָ֧ה (wisdom) לִשְׁלֹמֹ֛ה (to Solomon) וּתְבוּנָ֖ה (and understanding) הַרְבֵּ֣ה (great) מְאֹ֑ד (exceedingly), וְרֹ֣חַב (and breadth) לֵ֔ב (of heart), כַּח֕וֹל (like the sand) אֲשֶׁ֖ר (that is) עַל־ (on) שְׂפַ֥ת (the shore) הַיָּֽם׃ (of the sea). 30  וַתֵּ֙רֶב֙ (And was greater) חָכְמַ֣ת (the wisdom) שְׁלֹמֹ֔ה (of Solomon) מֵֽחָכְמַ֖ת (than the wisdom) כָּל־ (of all) בְּנֵי־ (of the sons) קֶ֑דֶם (of the East), וּמִכֹּ֖ל (and all) חָכְמַ֥ת (the wisdom) מִצְרָֽיִם׃ (of Egypt). 31  וַיֶּחְכַּם֮ (And for he was wiser) מִכָּל־ (than all) הָֽאָדָם֒ (men)— מֵאֵיתָ֣ן (than Ethan) הָאֶזְרָחִ֗י (the Ezrahite), וְהֵימָ֧ן (and Heman), וְכַלְכֹּ֛ל (and Calcol), וְדַרְדַּ֖ע (and Darda), בְּנֵ֣י (the sons) מָח֑וֹל (of Mahol). וַיְהִֽי־ (And was) שְׁמ֥וֹ (his fame) בְכָֽל־ (in all) הַגּוֹיִ֖ם (the nations) סָבִֽיב׃ (surrounding).

32  וַיְדַבֵּ֕ר (And He spoke) שְׁלֹ֥שֶׁת (three) אֲלָפִ֖ים (thousand) מָשָׁ֑ל (proverbs), וַיְהִ֥י (and were) שִׁיר֖וֹ (his songs) חֲמִשָּׁ֥ה (five) וָאָֽלֶף׃ (and a thousand). 33  וַיְדַבֵּר֮ (And he spoke) עַל־ (of) הָֽעֵצִים֒ (trees), מִן־ (from) הָאֶ֙רֶז֙ (the cedar) אֲשֶׁ֣ר (of) בַּלְּבָנ֔וֹן (Lebanon) וְעַד֙ (and to) הָאֵז֔וֹב (the hyssop) אֲשֶׁ֥ר (that) יֹצֵ֖א (comes out) בַּקִּ֑יר (of the wall). וַיְדַבֵּר֙ (And he spoke) עַל־ (of) הַבְּהֵמָ֣ה (the animals), וְעַל־ (and) הָע֔וֹף (of the birds), וְעַל־ (and) הָרֶ֖מֶשׂ (of the creeping things), וְעַל־ (and) הַדָּגִֽים׃ (of the fish).

34  וַיָּבֹ֙אוּ֙ (And men came) מִכָּל־ (from all) הָ֣עַמִּ֔ים (the nations) לִשְׁמֹ֕עַ (to hear) אֵ֖ת (-) חָכְמַ֣ת (the wisdom) שְׁלֹמֹ֑ה (of Solomon), מֵאֵת֙ (from) כָּל־ (all) מַלְכֵ֣י (the kings) הָאָ֔רֶץ (of the earth), אֲשֶׁ֥ר (who) שָׁמְע֖וּ (had heard of) אֶת־ (-) חָכְמָתֽוֹ׃ס (his wisdom).
