1And Jesus, filled with the Holy Spirit, returned from the Jordan, and was led by the Spirit into the wilderness 2For forty days to be tempted by the devil. And He ate nothing in those days; and after they had come to an end, He hungered. 3Then the devil said to Him, "If You are the Son of God, command that this stone become bread." 4But Jesus answered him, saying, "It is written, 'Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word of God. ' "

5Then the devil led Him up into a high mountain and showed Him all the kingdoms of the world in a moment of time. 6And the devil said to Him, "I will give You all this authority, and the glory of them all; for it has been delivered to me, and I give it to whomever I desire. 7Therefore, if You will worship me in my presence, all things shall be Yours." 8But Jesus answered and said to him, "Get behind Me, Satan; for it is written, 'You shall worship the Lord your God, and Him only shall you serve. ' "

9Then he led Him to Jerusalem and set Him upon the edge of the temple, and said to Him, "If You are the Son of God, cast Yourself down from here;

10For it is written, 'He shall give His angels charge concerning You to keep You;

11And in their hands they shall bear You up, lest You strike Your foot against a stone. ' "

12But Jesus answered and said to him, "It is clearly stated, 'You shall not tempt the Lord your God. ' "

13Now when the devil had completed every temptation, he departed from Him for a time.

14Then Jesus returned in the power of the Spirit to Galilee; and word about Him went out into the entire country around. 15And He taught in their synagogues, and was glorified by all.

16And He came to Nazareth, where He had been brought up; and according to His custom, He went into the synagogue on the Sabbath day and stood up to read. 17And there was given Him the book of the prophet Isaiah; and when He had unrolled the scroll, He found the place where it was written,

18"The Spirit of the Lord is upon Me; for this reason, He has anointed Me to preach the gospel to the poor; He has sent Me to heal those who are brokenhearted, to proclaim pardon to the captives and recovery of sight to the blind, to send forth in deliverance those who have been crushed,

19To proclaim the acceptable year of the Lord." 20And after rolling up the scroll and delivering it to the attendant, He sat down; and the eyes of everyone in the synagogue were fixed on Him. 21Then He began to say to them, "Today, this scripture is being fulfilled in your ears." 22And all bore witness to Him and were amazed at the words of grace that were coming out of His mouth; and they said, "Is not this the son of Joseph?" 23And He said to them, "Surely, you will say this parable to Me: 'Physician, heal Yourself! Whatever we have heard being done in Capernaum, do also here in Your own country. ' " 24But He said, "Truly I say to you, no prophet is acceptable in his own country. 25For in truth, I say to you, many widows were in Israel in the days of Elijah, when the heavens were shut up for three years and six months, and there was great famine upon all the land; 26And Elijah was not sent to any of them, but only to a widow in Sarepta, a city of Sidonia. 27There were also many lepers in Israel in the time of Elisha the prophet; and none of them were cleansed, but only Naaman the Syrian." 28Now all in the synagogue who heard these things were filled with indignation. 29And they rose up and cast Him out of the city, and led Him to the edge of the mountain on which their city was built, in order to throw Him down headlong; 30But He passed safely through their midst and departed.

31Then He went down to Capernaum, a city of Galilee, and taught them on the Sabbaths. 32And they were astonished at His teaching, for His word was with authority. 33Now a man who had an unclean spirit was in the synagogue; and he cried out with a loud voice, 34Saying, "Ah! What have we to do with You, Jesus the Nazarean? Have You come to destroy us? I know Who You are, the Holy One of God." 35And Jesus rebuked him, saying, "Be silent, and come out of him." And after throwing him into the midst, the demon came out of him and did not hurt him in any way. 36Then astonishment came upon everyone, and they spoke to one another, saying, "What message is this, that with authority and power He commands the unclean spirits, and they come out?" 37And news of His powerful deeds spread through every place in the surrounding country.

38Now after going out of the synagogue, He went into Simon's house. And Simon's mother-in-law was sick with a great fever; and they asked Him to intervene for her. 39Then He stood over her and rebuked the fever, and it left her. And immediately she arose and served them.

40Now as the sun was going down, all those who had sick persons with various diseases brought them to Him; and He laid His hands on each one of them and healed them. 41And demons went out from many, crying out and saying, "You are the Christ, the Son of God." But He rebuked them and did not allow them to speak, because they knew that He was the Christ.

42Now when day came, He departed and went into a desert place; but the multitudes searched for Him, and came to Him and were detaining Him, that He might not leave them. 43Then He said to them, "It is necessary for me to preach the gospel of the kingdom of God to the other cities; for this is the reason that I have been sent."

44And He went about preaching in the synagogues of Galilee.
