The Lord of the Sabbath
(Mark 2:23–28; Luke 6:1–5)

1At that time Jesus went on the sabbath through the grain-fields; and His disciples were hungry, and began to pluck heads of grain, and to eat. 2But the Pharisees, seeing it, said to Him, "Behold, Thy disciples are doing that which it is not lawful to do on a sabbath." 3But He said to them, "Did ye not read what David did, when he was hungry, and those with him? 4how he entered into the house of God, and ate the showbread, which it was not lawful for him to eat, nor for those with him, but only for the priests? 5Or did ye not read in the law that, on the sabbath, the priests in the temple profane the sabbath, and are guiltless? 6But I say to you, a greater than the temple is here. 7And, if ye had known what this means, 'I desire mercy, and not sacrifice,' ye would not have condemned the guiltless;

8for the Son of Man is Lord of the sabbath."

Jesus Heals on the Sabbath
(Mark 3:1–6; Luke 6:6–11)

9And, having passed on thence, He came into their synagogue. 10And, behold, a man having a withered hand; and they questioned Him, saying, "Is it lawful to heal on the sabbath?" that they might accuse Him. 11And He said to them "What man of you who shall have one sheep; and, if this should fall into a pit on the sabbath, will not lay hold of it, and raise it up? 12How much better, therefore, is a man than a sheep! Therefore, it is lawful to do well on the sabbath." 13Then saith He to the man, "Stretch forth your hand." And he stretched it forth; and it was restored whole as the other. 14But the Pharisees, having gone out, held a consultation against Him, that they might destroy Him.

God’s Chosen Servant

15But Jesus, knowing it, withdrew thence; and many followed Him, and He healed them all. 16And He charged them, that they should not make Him known; 17that it might be fulfilled which was spoken through Isaiah the prophet, saying,

18"Behold, My servant Whom I chose, My Beloved, in Whom My soul delighted. I will put My Spirit upon Him, and He will declare judgment to the gentiles.

19He will not strive, nor cry aloud; nor will any one hear His voice in the streets:

20A bruised reed will He not break, and a smoking flax will He not quench, till He send forth judgment unto victory;

21And in His name will the gentiles hope."

A House Divided
(Mark 3:20–27; Luke 11:14–23)

22Then there was brought to Him a demoniac, blind, and dumb; and He healed him, so that the dumb man spake and saw. 23And all the multitudes were amazed, and said, Can this be the Son of David?" 24But the Pharisees, hearing it, said, "This Man doth not cast out the demons, except by Beelzebub, prince of the demons."

25And, knowing their thoughts, He said to them, "Every kingdom, divided against itself, is brought to naught; and every city or house, divided against itself, shall not stand. 26And, if Satan cast out Satan, he is divided against himself; how, then, shall his kingdom stand 27And, if I by Beelzebub cast out the demons, by whom do your sons cast them out? Therefore, they shall be your judges. 28But, if I by the Spirit of God cast out the demons, then the Kingdom of God came upon you unexpectedly. 29Or how can one enter into the house of the strong man, and seize upon his goods, unless he first bind the strong man? And then he will plunder his house.

30He that is not with Me is against Me; and he that gathers not with Me scatters.

The Unpardonable Sin
(Mark 3:28–30)

31Therefore, I say to you, every sin and blasphemy will be forgiven to men, but the blasphemy against the Holy Spirit shall not be forgiven. 32And whosoever speaks a word against the Son of Man, it shall be forgiven him; but whosoever speaks against the Holy Spirit, it shall not be forgiven, neither in this age nor in that which is to come.

Good and Bad Fruit
(Luke 6:43–45)

33Either make the tree good and its fruit good, or make the tree worthless and its fruit worthless; for from the fruit the tree is known. 34"Broods of vipers! how can ye speak good things, being yourselves evil? For, out of the abundance of the heart, the mouth speaks. 35The good man, out of his good treasure, puts forth good things; and the evil man, out of his evil treasure, puts forth evil things. 36And I say to you, that every idle word that men shall speak, they shall give account concerning it in the day of judgment; 37for by your words you shall be justified, and by your words you shall be condemned."

The Sign of Jonah
(Luke 11:29–32)

38Then some of the scribes and Pharisees answered Him, saying, "Teacher, we wish to see a sign from Thee." 39And He, answering, said to them, "An evil and adulterous generation is seeking after a sign; and no sign shall be given to it, except the sign of Jonah the prophet. 40For, as Jonah was three days and three nights in the belly of the great fish, so shall the Son of Man be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth. 41"The men of Nineveh will rise up in the judgment with this generation, and will condemn it; because they repented at the preaching of Jonah, and, behold, a greater than Jonah is here. 42"A queen of the south will rise up in the judgment with this generation, and will condemn it; because she came from the ends of the earth to hear the wisdom of Solomon, and, behold, a greater than Solomon is here.

An Unclean Spirit Returns
(Luke 11:24–26)

43"But, when the unclean spirit goes out from the man, it passes through waterless places, seeking rest, and finds it not. 44Then it says, 'I will return into my house whence I came out;' and, having come, it finds it unoccupied, swept, and adorned. 45Then it goes and takes along with itself seven other spirits more evil than itself, and, entering in, they dwell there; and the last state of that man becomes worse than the first. So shall it be also to this wicked generation."

Jesus’ Mother and Brothers
(Mark 3:31–35; Luke 8:19–21)

46While He was yet speaking to the multitudes, behold, His mother and His brothers were standing without, seeking to speak to Him. 47[And one said to Him, "Behold, Thy mother and Thy brothers are standing without, seeking to speak to Thee."] 48But He, answering, said to him that told Him, "Who is My mother, and who are My brothers?" 49And stretching forth His hand toward His disciples, He said, "Behold, My mother and My brothers! 50For whosoever does the will of My Father Who is in Heaven, he is My brother, and sister, and mother."
