1 Now we who are strong [in our convictions and faith] ought to [patiently] put up with the weaknesses of those who are not strong, and not just please ourselves. We who are strong have an obligation to bear with the failings of the weak, and not to please ourselves. We who are strong ought to bear with the failings of the weak and not to please ourselves.
2 Let each one of us [make it a practice to] please his neighbor for his good, to build him up spiritually. Let each of us please his neighbor for his good, to build him up. Each of us should please our neighbors for their good, to build them up.
3 For even Christ did not please Himself; but as it is written [in Scripture], “THE REPROACHES OF THOSE WHO REPROACHED YOU (the Father) FELL ON ME (the Son).” For Christ did not please himself, but as it is written, “The reproaches of those who reproached you fell on me.” For even Christ did not please himself but, as it is written: “The insults of those who insult you have fallen on me.”
4 For whatever was written in earlier times was written for our instruction, so that through endurance and the encouragement of the Scriptures we might have hope and overflow with confidence in His promises. For whatever was written in former days was written for our instruction, that through endurance and through the encouragement of the Scriptures we might have hope. For everything that was written in the past was written to teach us, so that through the endurance taught in the Scriptures and the encouragement they provide we might have hope.
5 Now may the God who gives endurance and who supplies encouragement grant that you be of the same mind with one another according to Christ Jesus, May the God of endurance and encouragement grant you to live in such harmony with one another, in accord with Christ Jesus, May the God who gives endurance and encouragement give you the same attitude of mind toward each other that Christ Jesus had,
6 so that with one accord you may with one voice glorify and praise and honor the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ. that together you may with one voice glorify the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ. so that with one mind and one voice you may glorify the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ.
7 Therefore, [continue to] accept and welcome one another, just as Christ has accepted and welcomed us to the glory of [our great] God. Therefore welcome one another as Christ has welcomed you, for the glory of God. Accept one another, then, just as Christ accepted you, in order to bring praise to God.
8 For I tell you that Christ has become a servant and a minister to the circumcision (Jews) on behalf of God’s truth, to confirm and verify the promises made to the fathers, For I tell you that Christ became a servant to the circumcised to show God’s truthfulness, in order to confirm the promises given to the patriarchs, For I tell you that Christ has become a servant of the Jews on behalf of God’s truth, so that the promises made to the patriarchs might be confirmed
9 and for the Gentiles to glorify God for His mercy [to them, since God had no covenant with them]. As it is written and forever remains written, “THEREFORE I PRAISE YOU AMONG THE GENTILES, AND SING PRAISES TO YOUR NAME.” and in order that the Gentiles might glorify God for his mercy. As it is written, “Therefore I will praise you among the Gentiles, and sing to your name.” and, moreover, that the Gentiles might glorify God for his mercy. As it is written: “Therefore I will praise you among the Gentiles; I will sing the praises of your name.”
10 Again it says, “REJOICE and CELEBRATE, O GENTILES, ALONG WITH HIS PEOPLE.” And again it is said, “Rejoice, O Gentiles, with his people.” Again, it says, “Rejoice, you Gentiles, with his people.”
11 And again, “PRAISE THE LORD ALL YOU GENTILES, AND LET ALL THE PEOPLES PRAISE HIM!” And again, “Praise the Lord, all you Gentiles, and let all the peoples extol him.” And again, “Praise the Lord, all you Gentiles; let all the peoples extol him.”
12 Again Isaiah says, “THERE SHALL BE A ROOT OF JESSE, HE WHO ARISES TO RULE [as King] OVER THE GENTILES, IN HIM SHALL THE GENTILES HOPE.” And again Isaiah says, “The root of Jesse will come, even he who arises to rule the Gentiles; in him will the Gentiles hope.” And again, Isaiah says, “The Root of Jesse will spring up, one who will arise to rule over the nations; in him the Gentiles will hope.”
13 May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing [through the experience of your faith] that by the power of the Holy Spirit you will abound in hope and overflow with confidence in His promises. May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, so that by the power of the Holy Spirit you may abound in hope. May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in him, so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit.
14 Personally I am convinced about you, my brothers and sisters, that you yourselves are full of goodness, amply filled with all [spiritual] knowledge, and competent to admonish and counsel and instruct one another. I myself am satisfied about you, my brothers, that you yourselves are full of goodness, filled with all knowledge and able to instruct one another. I myself am convinced, my brothers and sisters, that you yourselves are full of goodness, filled with knowledge and competent to instruct one another.
15 Still, on some points I have written to you very boldly and without reservation to remind you [about them] again, because of the grace that was given to me from God, But on some points I have written to you very boldly by way of reminder, because of the grace given me by God Yet I have written you quite boldly on some points to remind you of them again, because of the grace God gave me
16 to be a minister of Christ Jesus to the Gentiles. I minister as a priest the gospel of God, in order that my offering of the Gentiles may become acceptable [to Him], sanctified [made holy and set apart for His purpose] by the Holy Spirit. to be a minister of Christ Jesus to the Gentiles in the priestly service of the gospel of God, so that the offering of the Gentiles may be acceptable, sanctified by the Holy Spirit. to be a minister of Christ Jesus to the Gentiles. He gave me the priestly duty of proclaiming the gospel of God, so that the Gentiles might become an offering acceptable to God, sanctified by the Holy Spirit.
17 In Christ Jesus, then, I have found [legitimate] reason for boasting in things related [to my service] to God. In Christ Jesus, then, I have reason to be proud of my work for God. Therefore I glory in Christ Jesus in my service to God.
18 For I will not [even] presume to speak of anything except what Christ has done through me [as an instrument in His hands], resulting in the obedience of the Gentiles [to the gospel], by word and deed, For I will not venture to speak of anything except what Christ has accomplished through me to bring the Gentiles to obedience—by word and deed, I will not venture to speak of anything except what Christ has accomplished through me in leading the Gentiles to obey God by what I have said and done—
19 with the power of signs and wonders, [and all of it] in the power of the Spirit. So [starting] from Jerusalem and as far away as Illyricum, I have fully preached the gospel [faithfully preaching the good news] of Christ [where it had not before been preached]. by the power of signs and wonders, by the power of the Spirit of God—so that from Jerusalem and all the way around to Illyricum I have fulfilled the ministry of the gospel of Christ; by the power of signs and wonders, through the power of the Spirit of God. So from Jerusalem all the way around to Illyricum, I have fully proclaimed the gospel of Christ.
20 Accordingly I set a goal to preach the gospel, not where Christ’s name was already known, so that I would not build on another man’s foundation; and thus I make it my ambition to preach the gospel, not where Christ has already been named, lest I build on someone else’s foundation, It has always been my ambition to preach the gospel where Christ was not known, so that I would not be building on someone else’s foundation.
21 but [instead I would act on this goal] as it is written [in Scripture], “THEY WHO HAD NO NEWS OF HIM SHALL SEE, AND THEY WHO HAVE NOT HEARD [of Him] SHALL UNDERSTAND.” but as it is written, “Those who have never been told of him will see, and those who have never heard will understand.” Rather, as it is written: “Those who were not told about him will see, and those who have not heard will understand.”
22 This [goal—my commitment to this principle] is the reason why I have often been prevented from coming to you [in Rome]. This is the reason why I have so often been hindered from coming to you. This is why I have often been hindered from coming to you.
23 But now, with no further place for work in these regions, and since I have longed for many years to come to you— But now, since I no longer have any room for work in these regions, and since I have longed for many years to come to you, But now that there is no more place for me to work in these regions, and since I have been longing for many years to visit you,
24 whenever I go [on my trip] to Spain—I hope to see you as I pass through [Rome], and to be helped on my journey there by you, after I have first enjoyed your company for a little while. I hope to see you in passing as I go to Spain, and to be helped on my journey there by you, once I have enjoyed your company for a while. I plan to do so when I go to Spain. I hope to see you while passing through and to have you assist me on my journey there, after I have enjoyed your company for a while.
25 But for now, I am going to Jerusalem to serve the saints (Jewish believers). At present, however, I am going to Jerusalem bringing aid to the saints. Now, however, I am on my way to Jerusalem in the service of the Lord’s people there.
26 For [Gentile believers in] Macedonia and Achaia have been pleased to make a contribution for the poor among the saints (Jewish believers) in Jerusalem. For Macedonia and Achaia have been pleased to make some contribution for the poor among the saints at Jerusalem. For Macedonia and Achaia were pleased to make a contribution for the poor among the Lord’s people in Jerusalem.
27 They were pleased to do it, and they are indebted to them. For if the Gentiles have come to share in their spiritual things, then they are indebted to serve them also in [tangible] material things. For they were pleased to do it, and indeed they owe it to them. For if the Gentiles have come to share in their spiritual blessings, they ought also to be of service to them in material blessings. They were pleased to do it, and indeed they owe it to them. For if the Gentiles have shared in the Jews’ spiritual blessings, they owe it to the Jews to share with them their material blessings.
28 Therefore, when I have finished this [mission] and have safely given to them what has been raised, I will go on by way of you to Spain. When therefore I have completed this and have delivered to them what has been collected, I will leave for Spain by way of you. So after I have completed this task and have made sure that they have received this contribution, I will go to Spain and visit you on the way.
29 I know that when I do come to you, I will come in the abundant blessing of Christ. I know that when I come to you I will come in the fullness of the blessing of Christ. I know that when I come to you, I will come in the full measure of the blessing of Christ.
30 I urge you, believers, by our Lord Jesus Christ and by the love of the Spirit, to join together with me in your prayers to God in my behalf, I appeal to you, brothers, by our Lord Jesus Christ and by the love of the Spirit, to strive together with me in your prayers to God on my behalf, I urge you, brothers and sisters, by our Lord Jesus Christ and by the love of the Spirit, to join me in my struggle by praying to God for me.
31 [and pray] that I may be rescued from the unbelievers in Judea, and that my service for Jerusalem may be acceptable to the saints (Jewish believers) there; that I may be delivered from the unbelievers in Judea, and that my service for Jerusalem may be acceptable to the saints, Pray that I may be kept safe from the unbelievers in Judea and that the contribution I take to Jerusalem may be favorably received by the Lord’s people there,
32 so that by God’s will I may come to you with joy and find rest in your company. so that by God’s will I may come to you with joy and be refreshed in your company. so that I may come to you with joy, by God’s will, and in your company be refreshed.
33 May the God of peace be with you all! Amen. May the God of peace be with you all. Amen. The God of peace be with you all. Amen.
