1 God of vengeance, O YHWH, O God of vengeance, shine forth! O LORD, God of vengeance, O God of vengeance, shine forth! The LORD is a God who avenges. O God who avenges, shine forth.
2 Rise up, O Judge of the earth! Return a recompense on the proud. Rise up, O judge of the earth; repay to the proud what they deserve! Rise up, Judge of the earth; pay back to the proud what they deserve.
3 Until when will the wicked, O YHWH, until when will the wicked exult? O LORD, how long shall the wicked, how long shall the wicked exult? How long, LORD, will the wicked, how long will the wicked be jubilant?
4 They pour out words of arrogance; all the workers of iniquity boast in themselves. They pour out their arrogant words; all the evildoers boast. They pour out arrogant words; all the evildoers are full of boasting.
5 Your people, O YHWH, they crush, and Your heritage they afflict. They crush your people, O LORD, and afflict your heritage. They crush your people, LORD; they oppress your inheritance.
6 The widow and the foreigner they kill, and the fatherless they murder. They kill the widow and the sojourner, and murder the fatherless; They slay the widow and the foreigner; they murder the fatherless.
7 And they say, “Yah does not see, and the God of Jacob does not discern.” and they say, “The LORD does not see; the God of Jacob does not perceive.” They say, “The LORD does not see; the God of Jacob takes no notice.”
8 Discern, O senseless among the people! O fools, when will you⁺ be wise? Understand, O dullest of the people! Fools, when will you be wise? Take notice, you senseless ones among the people; you fools, when will you become wise?
9 The One planting the ear, can He not hear? Or the One forming the eye, can He not see? He who planted the ear, does he not hear? He who formed the eye, does he not see? Does he who fashioned the ear not hear? Does he who formed the eye not see?
10 The One disciplining the nations, does He not correct—the One teaching a man knowledge? He who disciplines the nations, does he not rebuke? He who teaches man knowledge— Does he who disciplines nations not punish? Does he who teaches mankind lack knowledge?
11 YHWH knows the thoughts of man, that they are vapor. the LORD—knows the thoughts of man, that they are but a breath. The LORD knows all human plans; he knows that they are futile.
12 Blessed is the man whom You instruct, O YAH, and teach him from Your law, Blessed is the man whom you discipline, O LORD, and whom you teach out of your law, Blessed is the one you discipline, LORD, the one you teach from your law;
13 that You may give rest to him from the days of evil, until a pit is dug for the wicked. to give him rest from days of trouble, until a pit is dug for the wicked. you grant them relief from days of trouble, till a pit is dug for the wicked.
14 For YHWH will not forsake His people, and he will not forsake His inheritance. For the LORD will not forsake his people; he will not abandon his heritage; For the LORD will not reject his people; he will never forsake his inheritance.
15 But to righteousness the judgment will return, and all the upright of heart will follow it. for justice will return to the righteous, and all the upright in heart will follow it. Judgment will again be founded on righteousness, and all the upright in heart will follow it.
16 Who will rise up for me against the evildoers? Who will stand up for me against the workers of iniquity? Who rises up for me against the wicked? Who stands up for me against evildoers? Who will rise up for me against the wicked? Who will take a stand for me against evildoers?
17 Unless YHWH had been the help for me, My soul would soon have dwelt in silence. If the LORD had not been my help, my soul would soon have lived in the land of silence. Unless the LORD had given me help, I would soon have dwelt in the silence of death.
18 When I said, “My foot is slipping,” Your loving devotion, O YHWH, supports me. When I thought, “My foot slips,” your steadfast love, O LORD, held me up. When I said, “My foot is slipping,” your unfailing love, LORD, supported me.
19 In the abundance of my anxieties within me, Your comforts delighted my soul. When the cares of my heart are many, your consolations cheer my soul. When anxiety was great within me, your consolation brought me joy.
20 Can the throne of iniquity join with You—one shaping mischief by statute? Can wicked rulers be allied with you, those who frame injustice by statute? Can a corrupt throne be allied with you— a throne that brings on misery by its decrees?
21 They band together against the soul of the righteous, and condemn innocent blood. They band together against the life of the righteous and condemn the innocent to death. The wicked band together against the righteous and condemn the innocent to death.
22 And YHWH has become for me as a place up high, and my God as the rock of my refuge. But the LORD has become my stronghold, and my God the rock of my refuge. But the LORD has become my fortress, and my God the rock in whom I take refuge.
23 And He has turned back upon them their own iniquity, and in their wickedness He will finish them off—YHWH our God, will finish them off! He will bring back on them their iniquity and wipe them out for their wickedness; the LORD our God will wipe them out. He will repay them for their sins and destroy them for their wickedness; the LORD our God will destroy them.
