1 O LORD God, You to whom vengeance belongs, O God, You to whom vengeance belongs, shine forth [in judgment]! O LORD, God of vengeance, O God of vengeance, shine forth! The LORD is a God who avenges. O God who avenges, shine forth.
2 Rise up, O Judge of the earth; Give to the proud a fitting compensation. Rise up, O judge of the earth; repay to the proud what they deserve! Rise up, Judge of the earth; pay back to the proud what they deserve.
3 O LORD, how long will the wicked, How long will the wicked rejoice in triumph? O LORD, how long shall the wicked, how long shall the wicked exult? How long, LORD, will the wicked, how long will the wicked be jubilant?
4 They pour out words, speaking arrogant things; All who do evil boast proudly. They pour out their arrogant words; all the evildoers boast. They pour out arrogant words; all the evildoers are full of boasting.
5 They crush Your people, O LORD, And afflict and abuse Your heritage. They crush your people, O LORD, and afflict your heritage. They crush your people, LORD; they oppress your inheritance.
6 They kill the widow and the alien And murder the fatherless. They kill the widow and the sojourner, and murder the fatherless; They slay the widow and the foreigner; they murder the fatherless.
7 Yet they say, “The LORD does not see, Nor does the God of Jacob (Israel) notice it.” and they say, “The LORD does not see; the God of Jacob does not perceive.” They say, “The LORD does not see; the God of Jacob takes no notice.”
8 Consider thoughtfully, you senseless (stupid ones) among the people; And you [dull-minded] fools, when will you become wise and understand? Understand, O dullest of the people! Fools, when will you be wise? Take notice, you senseless ones among the people; you fools, when will you become wise?
9 He who made the ear, does He not hear? He who formed the eye, does He not see? He who planted the ear, does he not hear? He who formed the eye, does he not see? Does he who fashioned the ear not hear? Does he who formed the eye not see?
10 He who instructs the nations, Does He not rebuke and punish, He who teaches man knowledge? He who disciplines the nations, does he not rebuke? He who teaches man knowledge— Does he who disciplines nations not punish? Does he who teaches mankind lack knowledge?
11 The LORD knows the thoughts of man, That they are a mere breath (vain, empty, futile). the LORD—knows the thoughts of man, that they are but a breath. The LORD knows all human plans; he knows that they are futile.
12 Blessed [with wisdom and prosperity] is the man whom You discipline and instruct, O LORD, And whom You teach from Your law, Blessed is the man whom you discipline, O LORD, and whom you teach out of your law, Blessed is the one you discipline, LORD, the one you teach from your law;
13 That You may grant him [power to calm himself and find] peace in the days of adversity, Until the pit is dug for the wicked and ungodly. to give him rest from days of trouble, until a pit is dug for the wicked. you grant them relief from days of trouble, till a pit is dug for the wicked.
14 For the LORD will not abandon His people, Nor will He abandon His inheritance. For the LORD will not forsake his people; he will not abandon his heritage; For the LORD will not reject his people; he will never forsake his inheritance.
15 For judgment will again be righteous, And all the upright in heart will follow it. for justice will return to the righteous, and all the upright in heart will follow it. Judgment will again be founded on righteousness, and all the upright in heart will follow it.
16 Who will stand up for me against the evildoers? Who will take a stand for me against those who do wickedness? Who rises up for me against the wicked? Who stands up for me against evildoers? Who will rise up for me against the wicked? Who will take a stand for me against evildoers?
17 If the LORD had not been my help, I would soon have dwelt in [the land of] silence. If the LORD had not been my help, my soul would soon have lived in the land of silence. Unless the LORD had given me help, I would soon have dwelt in the silence of death.
18 If I say, “My foot has slipped,” Your compassion and lovingkindness, O LORD, will hold me up. When I thought, “My foot slips,” your steadfast love, O LORD, held me up. When I said, “My foot is slipping,” your unfailing love, LORD, supported me.
19 When my anxious thoughts multiply within me, Your comforts delight me. When the cares of my heart are many, your consolations cheer my soul. When anxiety was great within me, your consolation brought me joy.
20 Can a throne of destruction be allied with You, One which frames and devises mischief by decree [under the sacred name of law]? Can wicked rulers be allied with you, those who frame injustice by statute? Can a corrupt throne be allied with you— a throne that brings on misery by its decrees?
21 They band themselves together against the life of the righteous And condemn the innocent to death. They band together against the life of the righteous and condemn the innocent to death. The wicked band together against the righteous and condemn the innocent to death.
22 But the LORD has become my high tower and defense, And my God the rock of my refuge. But the LORD has become my stronghold, and my God the rock of my refuge. But the LORD has become my fortress, and my God the rock in whom I take refuge.
23 He has turned back their own wickedness upon them And will destroy them by means of their own evil; The LORD our God will wipe them out. He will bring back on them their iniquity and wipe them out for their wickedness; the LORD our God will wipe them out. He will repay them for their sins and destroy them for their wickedness; the LORD our God will destroy them.
