1 For the music director, Jeduthun; a psalm of Asaph. I will cry out to God and call for help! I will cry out to God and he will pay attention to me. I cry aloud to God, aloud to God, and he will hear me. For the director of music. For Jeduthun. Of Asaph. A psalm. I cried out to God for help; I cried out to God to hear me.
2 In my time of trouble I sought the Lord. I kept my hand raised in prayer throughout the night. I refused to be comforted. In the day of my trouble I seek the Lord; in the night my hand is stretched out without wearying; my soul refuses to be comforted. When I was in distress, I sought the Lord; at night I stretched out untiring hands, and I would not be comforted.
3 I said, |I will remember God while I groan; I will think about him while my strength leaves me.| (Selah) When I remember God, I moan; when I meditate, my spirit faints. Selah I remembered you, God, and I groaned; I meditated, and my spirit grew faint.
4 You held my eyelids open; I was troubled and could not speak. You hold my eyelids open; I am so troubled that I cannot speak. You kept my eyes from closing; I was too troubled to speak.
5 I thought about the days of old, about ancient times. I consider the days of old, the years long ago. I thought about the former days, the years of long ago;
6 I said, |During the night I will remember the song I once sang; I will think very carefully.| I tried to make sense of what was happening. I said, “Let me remember my song in the night; let me meditate in my heart.” Then my spirit made a diligent search: I remembered my songs in the night. My heart meditated and my spirit asked:
7 I asked, |Will the Lord reject me forever? Will he never again show me his favor? “Will the Lord spurn forever, and never again be favorable? “Will the Lord reject forever? Will he never show his favor again?
8 Has his loyal love disappeared forever? Has his promise failed forever? Has his steadfast love forever ceased? Are his promises at an end for all time? Has his unfailing love vanished forever? Has his promise failed for all time?
9 Has God forgotten to be merciful? Has his anger stifled his compassion?| Has God forgotten to be gracious? Has he in anger shut up his compassion?” Selah Has God forgotten to be merciful? Has he in anger withheld his compassion?”
10 Then I said, |I am sickened by the thought that the sovereign One might become inactive. Then I said, “I will appeal to this, to the years of the right hand of the Most High.” Then I thought, “To this I will appeal: the years when the Most High stretched out his right hand.
11 I will remember the works of the LORD. Yes, I will remember the amazing things you did long ago! I will remember the deeds of the LORD; yes, I will remember your wonders of old. I will remember the deeds of the LORD; yes, I will remember your miracles of long ago.
12 I will think about all you have done; I will reflect upon your deeds!| I will ponder all your work, and meditate on your mighty deeds. I will consider all your works and meditate on all your mighty deeds.”
13 O God, your deeds are extraordinary! What god can compare to our great God? Your way, O God, is holy. What god is great like our God? Your ways, God, are holy. What god is as great as our God?
14 You are the God who does amazing things; you have revealed your strength among the nations. You are the God who works wonders; you have made known your might among the peoples. You are the God who performs miracles; you display your power among the peoples.
15 You delivered your people by your strength--the children of Jacob and Joseph. (Selah) You with your arm redeemed your people, the children of Jacob and Joseph. Selah With your mighty arm you redeemed your people, the descendants of Jacob and Joseph.
16 The waters saw you, O God, the waters saw you and trembled. Yes, the depths of the sea shook with fear. When the waters saw you, O God, when the waters saw you, they were afraid; indeed, the deep trembled. The waters saw you, God, the waters saw you and writhed; the very depths were convulsed.
17 The clouds poured down rain; the skies thundered. Yes, your arrows flashed about. The clouds poured out water; the skies gave forth thunder; your arrows flashed on every side. The clouds poured down water, the heavens resounded with thunder; your arrows flashed back and forth.
18 Your thunderous voice was heard in the wind; the lightning bolts lit up the world; the earth trembled and shook.
