1 [A prayer by David.] Hear my plea for justice, O LORD. Pay attention to my cry. Open your ears to my prayer, [which comes] from lips free from deceit. Hear a just cause, O LORD; attend to my cry! Give ear to my prayer from lips free of deceit! A prayer of David. Hear me, LORD, my plea is just; listen to my cry. Hear my prayer— it does not rise from deceitful lips.
2 Let the verdict of my innocence come directly from you. Let your eyes observe what is fair. From your presence let my vindication come! Let your eyes behold the right! Let my vindication come from you; may your eyes see what is right.
3 You have probed my heart. You have confronted me at night. You have tested me like silver, but you found nothing wrong. I have determined that my mouth will not sin. You have tried my heart, you have visited me by night, you have tested me, and you will find nothing; I have purposed that my mouth will not transgress. Though you probe my heart, though you examine me at night and test me, you will find that I have planned no evil; my mouth has not transgressed.
4 I have avoided cruelty because of your word. In spite of what others have done, With regard to the works of man, by the word of your lips I have avoided the ways of the violent. Though people tried to bribe me, I have kept myself from the ways of the violent through what your lips have commanded.
5 my steps have remained firmly in your paths. My feet have not slipped. My steps have held fast to your paths; my feet have not slipped. My steps have held to your paths; my feet have not stumbled.
6 I have called on you because you answer me, O God. Turn your ear toward me. Hear what I have to say. I call upon you, for you will answer me, O God; incline your ear to me; hear my words. I call on you, my God, for you will answer me; turn your ear to me and hear my prayer.
7 Reveal your miraculous deeds of mercy, O Savior of those who find refuge by your side from those who attack them. Wondrously show your steadfast love, O Savior of those who seek refuge from their adversaries at your right hand. Show me the wonders of your great love, you who save by your right hand those who take refuge in you from their foes.
8 Guard me as if I were the pupil in your eye. Hide me in the shadow of your wings. Keep me as the apple of your eye; hide me in the shadow of your wings, Keep me as the apple of your eye; hide me in the shadow of your wings
9 Hide me from wicked people who violently attack me, from my deadly enemies who surround me. from the wicked who do me violence, my deadly enemies who surround me. from the wicked who are out to destroy me, from my mortal enemies who surround me.
10 They have shut out all feeling. Their mouths have spoken arrogantly. They close their hearts to pity; with their mouths they speak arrogantly. They close up their callous hearts, and their mouths speak with arrogance.
11 They have tracked me down. They have surrounded me. They have focused their attention on throwing me to the ground. They have now surrounded our steps; they set their eyes to cast us to the ground. They have tracked me down, they now surround me, with eyes alert, to throw me to the ground.
12 Each one of them is like a lion eager to tear [its prey] apart and like a young lion crouching in hiding places. He is like a lion eager to tear, as a young lion lurking in ambush. They are like a lion hungry for prey, like a fierce lion crouching in cover.
13 Arise, O LORD; confront them! Bring them to their knees! With your sword rescue my life from wicked people. Arise, O LORD! Confront him, subdue him! Deliver my soul from the wicked by your sword, Rise up, LORD, confront them, bring them down; with your sword rescue me from the wicked.
14 With your power rescue me from mortals, O LORD, from mortals who enjoy their inheritance only in this life. You fill their bellies with your treasure. Their children are satisfied [with it], and they leave what remains to their children. from men by your hand, O LORD, from men of the world whose portion is in this life. You fill their womb with treasure; they are satisfied with children, and they leave their abundance to their infants. By your hand save me from such people, LORD, from those of this world whose reward is in this life. May what you have stored up for the wicked fill their bellies; may their children gorge themselves on it, and may there be leftovers for their little ones.
15 I will see your face when I am declared innocent. When I wake up, I will be satisfied [with seeing] you. As for me, I shall behold your face in righteousness; when I awake, I shall be satisfied with your likeness. As for me, I will be vindicated and will see your face; when I awake, I will be satisfied with seeing your likeness.
