1 A Prayer of David. Hear the right, O LORD, attend unto my cry; give ear unto my prayer, that goeth not out of feigned lips. Hear a just cause, O LORD; attend to my cry! Give ear to my prayer from lips free of deceit! A prayer of David. Hear me, LORD, my plea is just; listen to my cry. Hear my prayer— it does not rise from deceitful lips.
2 Let my sentence come forth from thy presence; let thine eyes look upon equity. From your presence let my vindication come! Let your eyes behold the right! Let my vindication come from you; may your eyes see what is right.
3 Thou hast proved mine heart; thou hast visited me in the night; thou hast tried me, and findest nothing; I am purposed that my mouth shall not transgress. You have tried my heart, you have visited me by night, you have tested me, and you will find nothing; I have purposed that my mouth will not transgress. Though you probe my heart, though you examine me at night and test me, you will find that I have planned no evil; my mouth has not transgressed.
4 As for the works of men, by the word of thy lips I have kept me from the ways of the violent. With regard to the works of man, by the word of your lips I have avoided the ways of the violent. Though people tried to bribe me, I have kept myself from the ways of the violent through what your lips have commanded.
5 My steps have held fast to thy paths, my feet have not slipped. My steps have held fast to your paths; my feet have not slipped. My steps have held to your paths; my feet have not stumbled.
6 I have called upon thee, for thou wilt answer me, O God: incline thine ear unto me, and hear my speech. I call upon you, for you will answer me, O God; incline your ear to me; hear my words. I call on you, my God, for you will answer me; turn your ear to me and hear my prayer.
7 Shew thy marvelous lovingkindness, O thou that savest them which put their trust in thee from those that rise up against them, by thy right hand. Wondrously show your steadfast love, O Savior of those who seek refuge from their adversaries at your right hand. Show me the wonders of your great love, you who save by your right hand those who take refuge in you from their foes.
8 Keep me as the apple of the eye, hide me under the shadow of thy wings, Keep me as the apple of your eye; hide me in the shadow of your wings, Keep me as the apple of your eye; hide me in the shadow of your wings
9 From the wicked that spoil me, my deadly enemies, that compass me about. from the wicked who do me violence, my deadly enemies who surround me. from the wicked who are out to destroy me, from my mortal enemies who surround me.
10 They are enclosed in their own fat: with their mouth they speak proudly. They close their hearts to pity; with their mouths they speak arrogantly. They close up their callous hearts, and their mouths speak with arrogance.
11 They have now compassed us in our steps: they set their eyes to cast us down to the earth. They have now surrounded our steps; they set their eyes to cast us to the ground. They have tracked me down, they now surround me, with eyes alert, to throw me to the ground.
12 He is like a lion that is greedy of his prey, and as it were a young lion lurking in secret places. He is like a lion eager to tear, as a young lion lurking in ambush. They are like a lion hungry for prey, like a fierce lion crouching in cover.
13 Arise, O LORD, confront him, cast him down: deliver my soul from the wicked by thy sword; Arise, O LORD! Confront him, subdue him! Deliver my soul from the wicked by your sword, Rise up, LORD, confront them, bring them down; with your sword rescue me from the wicked.
14 From men, by thy hand, O LORD, from men of the world, whose portion is in this life, and whose belly thou fillest with thy treasure: they are satisfied with children, and leave the rest of their substance to their babes. from men by your hand, O LORD, from men of the world whose portion is in this life. You fill their womb with treasure; they are satisfied with children, and they leave their abundance to their infants. By your hand save me from such people, LORD, from those of this world whose reward is in this life. May what you have stored up for the wicked fill their bellies; may their children gorge themselves on it, and may there be leftovers for their little ones.
15 As for me, I shall behold thy face in righteousness: I shall be satisfied, when I awake, with thy likeness. As for me, I shall behold your face in righteousness; when I awake, I shall be satisfied with your likeness. As for me, I will be vindicated and will see your face; when I awake, I will be satisfied with seeing your likeness.
