If then there is any consolation in Christ, if there is any comfort of divine love, if any fellowship of the Spirit, if any affection and mercies, | So if there is any encouragement in Christ, any comfort from love, any participation in the Spirit, any affection and sympathy, | Therefore if you have any encouragement from being united with Christ, if any comfort from his love, if any common sharing in the Spirit, if any tenderness and compassion, |
fill my joy, that you may think the same thing, having the same divine love, being like-minded, thinking this one thing; | complete my joy by being of the same mind, having the same love, being in full accord and of one mind. | then make my joy complete by being like-minded, having the same love, being one in spirit and of one mind. |
that nothing is to be according to self-seeking nor according to vain glory, but in humility esteeming one another better than yourselves; | Do nothing from selfish ambition or conceit, but in humility count others more significant than yourselves. | Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather, in humility value others above yourselves, |
looking not each after your own interests, but each after that of others. | Let each of you look not only to his own interests, but also to the interests of others. | not looking to your own interests but each of you to the interests of the others. |
Think the same thing among yourselves, which is also in Christ Jesus: | Have this mind among yourselves, which is yours in Christ Jesus, | In your relationships with one another, have the same mindset as Christ Jesus: |
who, being in the form of God, thought it not usurpation to be equal with God, | who, though he was in the form of God, did not count equality with God a thing to be grasped, | Who, being in very nature God, did not consider equality with God something to be used to his own advantage; |
but he humbled himself, having taken the form of a servant, being in the likeness of men; and having been found in fashion like a man; | but emptied himself, by taking the form of a servant, being born in the likeness of men. | rather, he made himself nothing by taking the very nature of a servant, being made in human likeness. |
he humbled himself, being obedient even unto death, yea, the death of the cross. | And being found in human form, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross. | And being found in appearance as a man, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to death— even death on a cross! |
Therefore God has indeed exalted him, and given him a name above every name; | Therefore God has highly exalted him and bestowed on him the name that is above every name, | Therefore God exalted him to the highest place and gave him the name that is above every name, |
that at the name of Jesus every knee must bow, of things in heaven and things upon the earth and things beneath the earth, | so that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, | that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, |
and every tongue shall confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, unto the glory of God the Father. | and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father. | and every tongue acknowledge that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father. |
So, my beloved brethren, as you have always harkened, not only in my presence, but now much more in my absence, work out your own salvation with fear and trembling; | Therefore, my beloved, as you have always obeyed, so now, not only as in my presence but much more in my absence, work out your own salvation with fear and trembling, | Therefore, my dear friends, as you have always obeyed—not only in my presence, but now much more in my absence—continue to work out your salvation with fear and trembling, |
for God is the one working in you both to will and to do, of his own good pleasure. | for it is God who works in you, both to will and to work for his good pleasure. | for it is God who works in you to will and to act in order to fulfill his good purpose. |
Do all things without murmurings and disputatious; | Do all things without grumbling or disputing, | Do everything without grumbling or arguing, |
in order that you may be blameless and pure, the children of God, irreproachable, amid a crooked and perverse generation, among whom you shine as lights in the world, | that you may be blameless and innocent, children of God without blemish in the midst of a crooked and twisted generation, among whom you shine as lights in the world, | so that you may become blameless and pure, “children of God without fault in a warped and crooked generation.” Then you will shine among them like stars in the sky |
having the word of life; unto my boasting in the day of Christ, because I did not run in vain, neither did I labor in vain. | holding fast to the word of life, so that in the day of Christ I may be proud that I did not run in vain or labor in vain. | as you hold firmly to the word of life. And then I will be able to boast on the day of Christ that I did not run or labor in vain. |
But if indeed I am poured out for a sacrifice and an offering for your faith, I rejoice, and rejoice along with you all; | Even if I am to be poured out as a drink offering upon the sacrificial offering of your faith, I am glad and rejoice with you all. | But even if I am being poured out like a drink offering on the sacrifice and service coming from your faith, I am glad and rejoice with all of you. |
but you also rejoice in this same thing, and rejoice along with me. | Likewise you also should be glad and rejoice with me. | So you too should be glad and rejoice with me. |
But I hope in the Lord Jesus, speedily to send unto you Timothy, in order that I may also be delighted, having learned the things concerning you. | I hope in the Lord Jesus to send Timothy to you soon, so that I too may be cheered by news of you. | I hope in the Lord Jesus to send Timothy to you soon, that I also may be cheered when I receive news about you. |
For I have no one like-minded, who will nobly remember the things concerning you; | For I have no one like him, who will be genuinely concerned for your welfare. | I have no one else like him, who will show genuine concern for your welfare. |
for all are seeking after their own, and not the things of Jesus Christ. | For they all seek their own interests, not those of Jesus Christ. | For everyone looks out for their own interests, not those of Jesus Christ. |
But you know his integrity, that, as a child a father, he served along with me in the gospel. | But you know Timothy’s proven worth, how as a son with a father he has served with me in the gospel. | But you know that Timothy has proved himself, because as a son with his father he has served with me in the work of the gospel. |
Indeed then I hope to send him, so soon as I may learn the things concerning myself: | I hope therefore to send him just as soon as I see how it will go with me, | I hope, therefore, to send him as soon as I see how things go with me. |
but I trust in the Lord that I myself will come speedily. | and I trust in the Lord that shortly I myself will come also. | And I am confident in the Lord that I myself will come soon. |
But I thought it necessary to send to you Epaphroditus, my brother and fellow-laborer and fellow-soldier, and apostle and the minister of my necessity; | I have thought it necessary to send to you Epaphroditus my brother and fellow worker and fellow soldier, and your messenger and minister to my need, | But I think it is necessary to send back to you Epaphroditus, my brother, co-worker and fellow soldier, who is also your messenger, whom you sent to take care of my needs. |
since he was longing after you all, and grieving, because you heard that he was sick. | for he has been longing for you all and has been distressed because you heard that he was ill. | For he longs for all of you and is distressed because you heard he was ill. |
For he was indeed nigh unto death: but God had mercy on him; and not only him, but me also, in order that I may not have sorrow upon sorrow. | Indeed he was ill, near to death. But God had mercy on him, and not only on him but on me also, lest I should have sorrow upon sorrow. | Indeed he was ill, and almost died. But God had mercy on him, and not on him only but also on me, to spare me sorrow upon sorrow. |
Therefore I the more diligently, in order that, seeing him, you may rejoice again, and I may not be without sorrow. | I am the more eager to send him, therefore, that you may rejoice at seeing him again, and that I may be less anxious. | Therefore I am all the more eager to send him, so that when you see him again you may be glad and I may have less anxiety. |
Then receive him in the Lord with all joy, and have such in honor: | So receive him in the Lord with all joy, and honor such men, | So then, welcome him in the Lord with great joy, and honor people like him, |
because he was nigh unto death on account of the work of Christ, having jeoparded his life, in order that he might fulfill your deficiency of ministry towards me. | for he nearly died for the work of Christ, risking his life to complete what was lacking in your service to me. | because he almost died for the work of Christ. He risked his life to make up for the help you yourselves could not give me. |
