1 Therefore if there is any encouragement and comfort in Christ [as there certainly is in abundance], if there is any consolation of love, if there is any fellowship [that we share] in the Spirit, if [there is] any [great depth of] affection and compassion, So if there is any encouragement in Christ, any comfort from love, any participation in the Spirit, any affection and sympathy, Therefore if you have any encouragement from being united with Christ, if any comfort from his love, if any common sharing in the Spirit, if any tenderness and compassion,
2 make my joy complete by being of the same mind, having the same love [toward one another], knit together in spirit, intent on one purpose [and living a life that reflects your faith and spreads the gospel—the good news regarding salvation through faith in Christ]. complete my joy by being of the same mind, having the same love, being in full accord and of one mind. then make my joy complete by being like-minded, having the same love, being one in spirit and of one mind.
3 Do nothing from selfishness or empty conceit [through factional motives, or strife], but with [an attitude of] humility [being neither arrogant nor self-righteous], regard others as more important than yourselves. Do nothing from selfish ambition or conceit, but in humility count others more significant than yourselves. Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather, in humility value others above yourselves,
4 Do not merely look out for your own personal interests, but also for the interests of others. Let each of you look not only to his own interests, but also to the interests of others. not looking to your own interests but each of you to the interests of the others.
5 Have this same attitude in yourselves which was in Christ Jesus [look to Him as your example in selfless humility], Have this mind among yourselves, which is yours in Christ Jesus, In your relationships with one another, have the same mindset as Christ Jesus:
6 who, although He existed in the form and unchanging essence of God [as One with Him, possessing the fullness of all the divine attributes—the entire nature of deity], did not regard equality with God a thing to be grasped or asserted [as if He did not already possess it, or was afraid of losing it]; who, though he was in the form of God, did not count equality with God a thing to be grasped, Who, being in very nature God, did not consider equality with God something to be used to his own advantage;
7 but emptied Himself [without renouncing or diminishing His deity, but only temporarily giving up the outward expression of divine equality and His rightful dignity] by assuming the form of a bond-servant, and being made in the likeness of men [He became completely human but was without sin, being fully God and fully man]. but emptied himself, by taking the form of a servant, being born in the likeness of men. rather, he made himself nothing by taking the very nature of a servant, being made in human likeness.
8 After He was found in [terms of His] outward appearance as a man [for a divinely-appointed time], He humbled Himself [still further] by becoming obedient [to the Father] to the point of death, even death on a cross. And being found in human form, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross. And being found in appearance as a man, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to death— even death on a cross!
9 For this reason also [because He obeyed and so completely humbled Himself], God has highly exalted Him and bestowed on Him the name which is above every name, Therefore God has highly exalted him and bestowed on him the name that is above every name, Therefore God exalted him to the highest place and gave him the name that is above every name,
10 so that at the name of Jesus EVERY KNEE SHALL BOW [in submission], of those who are in heaven and on earth and under the earth, so that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth,
11 and that every tongue will confess and openly acknowledge that Jesus Christ is Lord (sovereign God), to the glory of God the Father. and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father. and every tongue acknowledge that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.
12 So then, my dear ones, just as you have always obeyed [my instructions with enthusiasm], not only in my presence, but now much more in my absence, continue to work out your salvation [that is, cultivate it, bring it to full effect, actively pursue spiritual maturity] with awe-inspired fear and trembling [using serious caution and critical self-evaluation to avoid anything that might offend God or discredit the name of Christ]. Therefore, my beloved, as you have always obeyed, so now, not only as in my presence but much more in my absence, work out your own salvation with fear and trembling, Therefore, my dear friends, as you have always obeyed—not only in my presence, but now much more in my absence—continue to work out your salvation with fear and trembling,
13 For it is [not your strength, but it is] God who is effectively at work in you, both to will and to work [that is, strengthening, energizing, and creating in you the longing and the ability to fulfill your purpose] for His good pleasure. for it is God who works in you, both to will and to work for his good pleasure. for it is God who works in you to will and to act in order to fulfill his good purpose.
14 Do everything without murmuring or questioning [the providence of God], Do all things without grumbling or disputing, Do everything without grumbling or arguing,
15 so that you may prove yourselves to be blameless and guileless, innocent and uncontaminated, children of God without blemish in the midst of a [morally] crooked and [spiritually] perverted generation, among whom you are seen as bright lights [beacons shining out clearly] in the world [of darkness], that you may be blameless and innocent, children of God without blemish in the midst of a crooked and twisted generation, among whom you shine as lights in the world, so that you may become blameless and pure, “children of God without fault in a warped and crooked generation.” Then you will shine among them like stars in the sky
16 holding out and offering to everyone the word of life, so that in the day of Christ I will have reason to rejoice greatly because I did not run [my race] in vain nor labor without result. holding fast to the word of life, so that in the day of Christ I may be proud that I did not run in vain or labor in vain. as you hold firmly to the word of life. And then I will be able to boast on the day of Christ that I did not run or labor in vain.
17 But even if I am being poured out as a drink offering on the sacrifice and service of your faith [for preaching the message of salvation], still I rejoice and share my joy with you all. Even if I am to be poured out as a drink offering upon the sacrificial offering of your faith, I am glad and rejoice with you all. But even if I am being poured out like a drink offering on the sacrifice and service coming from your faith, I am glad and rejoice with all of you.
18 You too, rejoice in the same way and share your joy with me. Likewise you also should be glad and rejoice with me. So you too should be glad and rejoice with me.
19 But I hope in the Lord Jesus to send Timothy to you soon, so that I may also be encouraged by learning news about you. I hope in the Lord Jesus to send Timothy to you soon, so that I too may be cheered by news of you. I hope in the Lord Jesus to send Timothy to you soon, that I also may be cheered when I receive news about you.
20 For I have no one else [like him who is] so kindred a spirit who will be genuinely concerned for your [spiritual] welfare. For I have no one like him, who will be genuinely concerned for your welfare. I have no one else like him, who will show genuine concern for your welfare.
21 For the others [who deserted me after my arrest] all seek [to advance] their own interests, not those of Jesus Christ. For they all seek their own interests, not those of Jesus Christ. For everyone looks out for their own interests, not those of Jesus Christ.
22 But you know of Timothy’s tested worth and his proven character, that he has served with me to advance the gospel like a son serving with his father. But you know Timothy’s proven worth, how as a son with a father he has served with me in the gospel. But you know that Timothy has proved himself, because as a son with his father he has served with me in the work of the gospel.
23 Therefore, I hope [that it is His will] to send him immediately, just as soon as I see how my case turns out; I hope therefore to send him just as soon as I see how it will go with me, I hope, therefore, to send him as soon as I see how things go with me.
24 and I trust [confidently] in the Lord that soon I also will be coming to you. and I trust in the Lord that shortly I myself will come also. And I am confident in the Lord that I myself will come soon.
25 However, I thought it necessary to send back to you Epaphroditus, [who has been] my brother and companion and fellow soldier, who was also sent as your messenger to take care of my needs. I have thought it necessary to send to you Epaphroditus my brother and fellow worker and fellow soldier, and your messenger and minister to my need, But I think it is necessary to send back to you Epaphroditus, my brother, co-worker and fellow soldier, who is also your messenger, whom you sent to take care of my needs.
26 For he has been longing for all of you and was distressed because you had heard that he was sick. for he has been longing for you all and has been distressed because you heard that he was ill. For he longs for all of you and is distressed because you heard he was ill.
27 He certainly was sick and close to death. But God had mercy on him, and not only on him but also on me, so that I would not have sorrow upon sorrow. Indeed he was ill, near to death. But God had mercy on him, and not only on him but on me also, lest I should have sorrow upon sorrow. Indeed he was ill, and almost died. But God had mercy on him, and not on him only but also on me, to spare me sorrow upon sorrow.
28 So I have sent him all the more eagerly so that when you see him again you may rejoice and I may be less concerned about you. I am the more eager to send him, therefore, that you may rejoice at seeing him again, and that I may be less anxious. Therefore I am all the more eager to send him, so that when you see him again you may be glad and I may have less anxiety.
29 Welcome him home in the Lord with great joy, and appreciate and honor men like him; So receive him in the Lord with all joy, and honor such men, So then, welcome him in the Lord with great joy, and honor people like him,
30 because he came close to death for the work of Christ, risking his life to complete what was lacking in your service to me [which distance prevented you from rendering personally]. for he nearly died for the work of Christ, risking his life to complete what was lacking in your service to me. because he almost died for the work of Christ. He risked his life to make up for the help you yourselves could not give me.
