Now Korah the son of Izhar, son of Kohath, son of Levi, and Dathan and Abiram the sons of Eliab, and On the son of Peleth, sons of Reuben, took men. Korah, son of Izhar, son of Kohath, son of Levi, and the Reubenites Dathan and Abiram, sons of Eliab, and On, son of Peleth, son of Reuben took Korah son of Izhar, the son of Kohath, the son of Levi, and certain Reubenites—Dathan and Abiram, sons of Eliab, and On son of Peleth—became insolent
And they rose up before Moses, with a number of the people of Israel, 250 chiefs of the congregation, chosen from the assembly, well-known men. two hundred and fifty Israelites who were leaders in the community, members of the council and men of note, and confronted Moses. and rose up against Moses. With them were 250 Israelite men, well-known community leaders who had been appointed members of the council.
They assembled themselves together against Moses and against Aaron and said to them, “You have gone too far! For all in the congregation are holy, every one of them, and the LORD is among them. Why then do you exalt yourselves above the assembly of the LORD?” Holding an assembly against Moses and Aaron, they said, “You go too far! The whole community, all of them, are holy; the LORD is in their midst. Why then should you set yourselves over the LORD’s assembly?” They came as a group to oppose Moses and Aaron and said to them, “You have gone too far! The whole community is holy, every one of them, and the LORD is with them. Why then do you set yourselves above the LORD’s assembly?”
When Moses heard it, he fell on his face, When Moses heard this, he fell prostrate. When Moses heard this, he fell facedown.
and he said to Korah and all his company, “In the morning the LORD will show who is his, and who is holy, and will bring him near to him. The one whom he chooses he will bring near to him. Then he said to Korah and to all his faction, “May the LORD make known tomorrow morning who belongs to him and who is the holy one and whom he will have draw near to him! The one whom he chooses, he will have draw near to him. Then he said to Korah and all his followers: “In the morning the LORD will show who belongs to him and who is holy, and he will have that person come near him. The man he chooses he will cause to come near him.
Do this: take censers, Korah and all his company; Do this: take your censers, Korah and all his faction, You, Korah, and all your followers are to do this: Take censers
put fire in them and put incense on them before the LORD tomorrow, and the man whom the LORD chooses shall be the holy one. You have gone too far, sons of Levi!” and put fire in them and place incense in them before the LORD tomorrow. He whom the LORD then chooses is the holy one. You Levites go too far!” and tomorrow put burning coals and incense in them before the LORD. The man the LORD chooses will be the one who is holy. You Levites have gone too far!”
And Moses said to Korah, “Hear now, you sons of Levi: Moses also said to Korah, “Hear, now, you Levites! Moses also said to Korah, “Now listen, you Levites!
is it too small a thing for you that the God of Israel has separated you from the congregation of Israel, to bring you near to himself, to do service in the tabernacle of the LORD and to stand before the congregation to minister to them, Are you not satisfied that the God of Israel has singled you out from the community of Israel, to have you draw near him to maintain the LORD’s tabernacle, and to attend upon the community and to serve them? Isn’t it enough for you that the God of Israel has separated you from the rest of the Israelite community and brought you near himself to do the work at the LORD’s tabernacle and to stand before the community and minister to them?
and that he has brought you near him, and all your brothers the sons of Levi with you? And would you seek the priesthood also? He has allowed you and your Levite kinsmen with you to approach him, and yet you seek the priesthood too. He has brought you and all your fellow Levites near himself, but now you are trying to get the priesthood too.
Therefore it is against the LORD that you and all your company have gathered together. What is Aaron that you grumble against him?” It is therefore against the LORD that you and all your faction are conspiring. As for Aaron, what has he done that you should grumble against him?” It is against the LORD that you and all your followers have banded together. Who is Aaron that you should grumble against him?”
And Moses sent to call Dathan and Abiram the sons of Eliab, and they said, “We will not come up. Moses summoned Dathan and Abiram, sons of Eliab, but they answered, “We will not go. Then Moses summoned Dathan and Abiram, the sons of Eliab. But they said, “We will not come!
Is it a small thing that you have brought us up out of a land flowing with milk and honey, to kill us in the wilderness, that you must also make yourself a prince over us? Are you not satisfied that you have brought us here from a land flowing with milk and honey to have us perish in the wilderness, that now you must also lord it over us? Isn’t it enough that you have brought us up out of a land flowing with milk and honey to kill us in the wilderness? And now you also want to lord it over us!
Moreover, you have not brought us into a land flowing with milk and honey, nor given us inheritance of fields and vineyards. Will you put out the eyes of these men? We will not come up.” Far from bringing us to a land flowing with milk and honey, or giving us fields and vineyards for our inheritance, will you gouge out our eyes? No, we will not go.” Moreover, you haven’t brought us into a land flowing with milk and honey or given us an inheritance of fields and vineyards. Do you want to treat these men like slaves? No, we will not come!”
And Moses was very angry and said to the LORD, “Do not respect their offering. I have not taken one donkey from them, and I have not harmed one of them.” Then Moses became very angry and said to the LORD, “Pay no attention to their offering. I have never taken a single donkey from them, nor have I wronged any one of them.” Then Moses became very angry and said to the LORD, “Do not accept their offering. I have not taken so much as a donkey from them, nor have I wronged any of them.”
And Moses said to Korah, “Be present, you and all your company, before the LORD, you and they, and Aaron, tomorrow. Moses said to Korah, “You and all your faction shall appear before the LORD tomorrow—you and they and Aaron too. Moses said to Korah, “You and all your followers are to appear before the LORD tomorrow—you and they and Aaron.
And let every one of you take his censer and put incense on it, and every one of you bring before the LORD his censer, 250 censers; you also, and Aaron, each his censer.” Then each of you take his own censer, put incense in it, and present it before the LORD, two hundred and fifty censers; and you and Aaron, each with his own censer, do the same.” Each man is to take his censer and put incense in it—250 censers in all—and present it before the LORD. You and Aaron are to present your censers also.”
So every man took his censer and put fire in them and laid incense on them and stood at the entrance of the tent of meeting with Moses and Aaron. So each of them took their censers, and laying incense on the fire they had put in them, they took their stand by the entrance of the tent of meeting along with Moses and Aaron. So each of them took his censer, put burning coals and incense in it, and stood with Moses and Aaron at the entrance to the tent of meeting.
Then Korah assembled all the congregation against them at the entrance of the tent of meeting. And the glory of the LORD appeared to all the congregation. Then, when Korah had assembled all the community against them at the entrance of the tent of meeting, the glory of the LORD appeared to the entire community, When Korah had gathered all his followers in opposition to them at the entrance to the tent of meeting, the glory of the LORD appeared to the entire assembly.
And the LORD spoke to Moses and to Aaron, saying, and the LORD said to Moses and Aaron: The LORD said to Moses and Aaron,
“Separate yourselves from among this congregation, that I may consume them in a moment.” Stand apart from this community, that I may consume them at once. “Separate yourselves from this assembly so I can put an end to them at once.”
And they fell on their faces and said, “O God, the God of the spirits of all flesh, shall one man sin, and will you be angry with all the congregation?” But they fell prostrate and exclaimed, “O God, God of the spirits of all living creatures, if one man sins will you be angry with the whole community?” But Moses and Aaron fell facedown and cried out, “O God, the God who gives breath to all living things, will you be angry with the entire assembly when only one man sins?”
And the LORD spoke to Moses, saying, The LORD answered Moses: Then the LORD said to Moses,
“Say to the congregation, Get away from the dwelling of Korah, Dathan, and Abiram.” Speak to the community and tell them: Withdraw from the area around the tent of Korah, Dathan and Abiram. “Say to the assembly, ‘Move away from the tents of Korah, Dathan and Abiram.’”
Then Moses rose and went to Dathan and Abiram, and the elders of Israel followed him. Moses, followed by the elders of Israel, arose and went to Dathan and Abiram. Moses got up and went to Dathan and Abiram, and the elders of Israel followed him.
And he spoke to the congregation, saying, “Depart, please, from the tents of these wicked men, and touch nothing of theirs, lest you be swept away with all their sins.” Then he spoke to the community, “Move away from the tents of these wicked men and do not touch anything that is theirs: otherwise you too will be swept away because of all their sins.” He warned the assembly, “Move back from the tents of these wicked men! Do not touch anything belonging to them, or you will be swept away because of all their sins.”
So they got away from the dwelling of Korah, Dathan, and Abiram. And Dathan and Abiram came out and stood at the door of their tents, together with their wives, their sons, and their little ones. So they withdrew from the area around the tents of Korah, Dathan and Abiram. When Dathan and Abiram had come out and were standing at the entrance of their tents with their wives, their children, and their little ones, So they moved away from the tents of Korah, Dathan and Abiram. Dathan and Abiram had come out and were standing with their wives, children and little ones at the entrances to their tents.
And Moses said, “Hereby you shall know that the LORD has sent me to do all these works, and that it has not been of my own accord. Moses said, “This is how you shall know that the LORD sent me to do all I have done, and that it was not of my own devising: Then Moses said, “This is how you will know that the LORD has sent me to do all these things and that it was not my idea:
If these men die as all men die, or if they are visited by the fate of all mankind, then the LORD has not sent me. if these die an ordinary death, merely suffering the fate common to all humanity, the LORD has not sent me. If these men die a natural death and suffer the fate of all mankind, then the LORD has not sent me.
But if the LORD creates something new, and the ground opens its mouth and swallows them up with all that belongs to them, and they go down alive into Sheol, then you shall know that these men have despised the LORD.” But if the LORD makes a chasm, and the ground opens its mouth and swallows them with all belonging to them, and they go down alive to Sheol, then you will know that these men have spurned the LORD.” But if the LORD brings about something totally new, and the earth opens its mouth and swallows them, with everything that belongs to them, and they go down alive into the realm of the dead, then you will know that these men have treated the LORD with contempt.”
And as soon as he had finished speaking all these words, the ground under them split apart. No sooner had he finished saying all this than the ground beneath them split open, As soon as he finished saying all this, the ground under them split apart
And the earth opened its mouth and swallowed them up, with their households and all the people who belonged to Korah and all their goods. and the earth opened its mouth and swallowed them and their families and all of Korah’s people with all their possessions. and the earth opened its mouth and swallowed them and their households, and all those associated with Korah, together with their possessions.
So they and all that belonged to them went down alive into Sheol, and the earth closed over them, and they perished from the midst of the assembly. They went down alive to Sheol with all belonging to them; the earth closed over them, and they disappeared from the assembly. They went down alive into the realm of the dead, with everything they owned; the earth closed over them, and they perished and were gone from the community.
And all Israel who were around them fled at their cry, for they said, “Lest the earth swallow us up!” But all the Israelites near them fled at their shrieks, saying, “The earth might swallow us too!” At their cries, all the Israelites around them fled, shouting, “The earth is going to swallow us too!”
And fire came out from the LORD and consumed the 250 men offering the incense. And fire from the LORD came forth which consumed the two hundred and fifty men who were offering the incense. And fire came out from the LORD and consumed the 250 men who were offering the incense.
Then the LORD spoke to Moses, saying, The LORD said to Moses: The LORD said to Moses,
“Tell Eleazar the son of Aaron the priest to take up the censers out of the blaze. Then scatter the fire far and wide, for they have become holy. Tell Eleazar, son of Aaron the priest, to remove the censers from the embers; and scatter the fire some distance away, for they have become holy— “Tell Eleazar son of Aaron, the priest, to remove the censers from the charred remains and scatter the coals some distance away, for the censers are holy—
As for the censers of these men who have sinned at the cost of their lives, let them be made into hammered plates as a covering for the altar, for they offered them before the LORD, and they became holy. Thus they shall be a sign to the people of Israel.” the censers of those who sinned at the cost of their lives. Have them hammered into plates to cover the altar, because in being presented before the LORD they have become holy. In this way they shall serve as a sign to the Israelites. the censers of the men who sinned at the cost of their lives. Hammer the censers into sheets to overlay the altar, for they were presented before the LORD and have become holy. Let them be a sign to the Israelites.”
So Eleazar the priest took the bronze censers, which those who were burned had offered, and they were hammered out as a covering for the altar, So taking the bronze censers which had been presented by those who were burned, Eleazar the priest had them hammered into a covering for the altar, So Eleazar the priest collected the bronze censers brought by those who had been burned to death, and he had them hammered out to overlay the altar,
to be a reminder to the people of Israel, so that no outsider, who is not of the descendants of Aaron, should draw near to burn incense before the LORD, lest he become like Korah and his company—as the LORD said to him through Moses. just as the LORD had directed him through Moses. This was to be a reminder to the Israelites that no unauthorized person, no one who was not a descendant of Aaron, should draw near to offer incense before the LORD, lest he meet the fate of Korah and his faction. as the LORD directed him through Moses. This was to remind the Israelites that no one except a descendant of Aaron should come to burn incense before the LORD, or he would become like Korah and his followers.
But on the next day all the congregation of the people of Israel grumbled against Moses and against Aaron, saying, “You have killed the people of the LORD.” The next day the whole Israelite community grumbled against Moses and Aaron, saying, “You have killed the people of the LORD.” The next day the whole Israelite community grumbled against Moses and Aaron. “You have killed the LORD’s people,” they said.
And when the congregation had assembled against Moses and against Aaron, they turned toward the tent of meeting. And behold, the cloud covered it, and the glory of the LORD appeared. But while the community was assembling against them, Moses and Aaron turned toward the tent of meeting, and the cloud now covered it and the glory of the LORD appeared. But when the assembly gathered in opposition to Moses and Aaron and turned toward the tent of meeting, suddenly the cloud covered it and the glory of the LORD appeared.
And Moses and Aaron came to the front of the tent of meeting, Then Moses and Aaron came to the front of the tent of meeting, Then Moses and Aaron went to the front of the tent of meeting,
and the LORD spoke to Moses, saying, and the LORD said to Moses: and the LORD said to Moses,
“Get away from the midst of this congregation, that I may consume them in a moment.” And they fell on their faces. Remove yourselves from this community, that I may consume them at once. But they fell prostrate. “Get away from this assembly so I can put an end to them at once.” And they fell facedown.
And Moses said to Aaron, “Take your censer, and put fire on it from off the altar and lay incense on it and carry it quickly to the congregation and make atonement for them, for wrath has gone out from the LORD; the plague has begun.” Then Moses said to Aaron, “Take your censer, put fire from the altar in it, lay incense on it, and bring it quickly to the community to make atonement for them; for wrath has come forth from the LORD and the plague has begun.” Then Moses said to Aaron, “Take your censer and put incense in it, along with burning coals from the altar, and hurry to the assembly to make atonement for them. Wrath has come out from the LORD; the plague has started.”
So Aaron took it as Moses said and ran into the midst of the assembly. And behold, the plague had already begun among the people. And he put on the incense and made atonement for the people. Aaron took his censer just as Moses directed and ran in among the assembly, where the plague had already begun among the people. Then he offered the incense and made atonement for the people, So Aaron did as Moses said, and ran into the midst of the assembly. The plague had already started among the people, but Aaron offered the incense and made atonement for them.
And he stood between the dead and the living, and the plague was stopped. while standing there between the living and the dead. And so the scourge was checked. He stood between the living and the dead, and the plague stopped.
Now those who died in the plague were 14,700, besides those who died in the affair of Korah. There were fourteen thousand seven hundred dead from the scourge, in addition to those who died because of Korah. But 14,700 people died from the plague, in addition to those who had died because of Korah.
And Aaron returned to Moses at the entrance of the tent of meeting, when the plague was stopped. When the scourge had been checked, Aaron returned to Moses at the entrance of the tent of meeting. Then Aaron returned to Moses at the entrance to the tent of meeting, for the plague had stopped.
