1 And Jesus, getting into a boat, crossed over the Sea of Galilee and came to [Capernaum] His own city. And getting into a boat he crossed over and came to his own city. Jesus stepped into a boat, crossed over and came to his own town.
2 They brought to Him a man who was paralyzed, lying on a stretcher. Seeing their [active] faith [springing from confidence in Him], Jesus said to the paralytic, “Do not be afraid, son; your sins are forgiven [the penalty is paid, the guilt removed, and you are declared to be in right standing with God].” And behold, some people brought to him a paralytic, lying on a bed. And when Jesus saw their faith, he said to the paralytic, “Take heart, my son; your sins are forgiven.” Some men brought to him a paralyzed man, lying on a mat. When Jesus saw their faith, he said to the man, “Take heart, son; your sins are forgiven.”
3 And some of the scribes said to themselves, “This man blasphemes [by claiming the rights and prerogatives of God]!” And behold, some of the scribes said to themselves, “This man is blaspheming.” At this, some of the teachers of the law said to themselves, “This fellow is blaspheming!”
4 But Jesus, knowing their thoughts, said, “Why do you think evil in your hearts? But Jesus, knowing their thoughts, said, “Why do you think evil in your hearts? Knowing their thoughts, Jesus said, “Why do you entertain evil thoughts in your hearts?
5 For which is easier, to say, ‘Your sins are forgiven and the penalty paid,’ or to say, ‘Get up and walk’? [Both are possible for God; both are impossible for man.] For which is easier, to say, ‘Your sins are forgiven,’ or to say, ‘Rise and walk’? Which is easier: to say, ‘Your sins are forgiven,’ or to say, ‘Get up and walk’?
6 But so that you may know that the Son of Man has authority and the power on earth to forgive sins”—then He said to the paralytic, “Get up, pick up your stretcher and go home.” But that you may know that the Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins”—he then said to the paralytic— “Rise, pick up your bed and go home.” But I want you to know that the Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins.” So he said to the paralyzed man, “Get up, take your mat and go home.”
7 And he got up and went home [healed and forgiven]. And he rose and went home. Then the man got up and went home.
8 When the crowds saw this, they were awestruck, and glorified God and praised Him, who had given such authority and power to men. When the crowds saw it, they were afraid, and they glorified God, who had given such authority to men. When the crowd saw this, they were filled with awe; and they praised God, who had given such authority to man.
9 As Jesus went on from there, He saw a man named Matthew (Levi) sitting in the tax collector’s booth; and He said to him, “Follow Me [as My disciple, accepting Me as your Master and Teacher and walking the same path of life that I walk].” And Matthew got up and followed Him. As Jesus passed on from there, he saw a man called Matthew sitting at the tax booth, and he said to him, “Follow me.” And he rose and followed him. As Jesus went on from there, he saw a man named Matthew sitting at the tax collector’s booth. “Follow me,” he told him, and Matthew got up and followed him.
10 Then as Jesus was reclining at the table in Matthew’s house, many tax collectors and sinners [including non-observant Jews] came and ate with Him and His disciples. And as Jesus reclined at table in the house, behold, many tax collectors and sinners came and were reclining with Jesus and his disciples. While Jesus was having dinner at Matthew’s house, many tax collectors and sinners came and ate with him and his disciples.
11 When the Pharisees saw this, they asked His disciples, “Why does your Master eat with tax collectors and sinners?” And when the Pharisees saw this, they said to his disciples, “Why does your teacher eat with tax collectors and sinners?” When the Pharisees saw this, they asked his disciples, “Why does your teacher eat with tax collectors and sinners?”
12 But when Jesus heard this, He said, “Those who are healthy have no need for a physician, but [only] those who are sick. But when he heard it, he said, “Those who are well have no need of a physician, but those who are sick. On hearing this, Jesus said, “It is not the healthy who need a doctor, but the sick.
13 Go and learn what this [Scripture] means: ‘I DESIRE COMPASSION [for those in distress], AND NOT [animal] SACRIFICE,’ for I did not come to call [to repentance] the [self-proclaimed] righteous [who see no need to change], but sinners [those who recognize their sin and actively seek forgiveness].” Go and learn what this means: ‘I desire mercy, and not sacrifice.’ For I came not to call the righteous, but sinners.” But go and learn what this means: ‘I desire mercy, not sacrifice.’ For I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners.”
14 Then the disciples of John [the Baptist] came to Jesus, asking, “Why do we and the Pharisees often fast [as a religious exercise], but Your disciples do not fast?” Then the disciples of John came to him, saying, “Why do we and the Pharisees fast, but your disciples do not fast?” Then John’s disciples came and asked him, “How is it that we and the Pharisees fast often, but your disciples do not fast?”
15 And Jesus replied to them, “Can the guests of the bridegroom mourn while the bridegroom is with them? The days will come when the bridegroom is taken away from them, and then they will fast. And Jesus said to them, “Can the wedding guests mourn as long as the bridegroom is with them? The days will come when the bridegroom is taken away from them, and then they will fast. Jesus answered, “How can the guests of the bridegroom mourn while he is with them? The time will come when the bridegroom will be taken from them; then they will fast.
16 But no one puts a piece of unshrunk (new) cloth on an old garment; for the patch pulls away from the garment, and a worse tear results. No one puts a piece of unshrunk cloth on an old garment, for the patch tears away from the garment, and a worse tear is made. “No one sews a patch of unshrunk cloth on an old garment, for the patch will pull away from the garment, making the tear worse.
17 Nor is new wine put into old wineskins [that have lost their elasticity]; otherwise the wineskins burst, and the [fermenting] wine spills and the wineskins are ruined. But new wine is put into fresh wineskins, so both are preserved.” Neither is new wine put into old wineskins. If it is, the skins burst and the wine is spilled and the skins are destroyed. But new wine is put into fresh wineskins, and so both are preserved.” Neither do people pour new wine into old wineskins. If they do, the skins will burst; the wine will run out and the wineskins will be ruined. No, they pour new wine into new wineskins, and both are preserved.”
18 While He was saying these things to them, a ruler (synagogue official) entered [the house] and kneeled down and worshiped Him, saying, “My daughter has just now died; but come and lay Your hand on her, and she will live.” While he was saying these things to them, behold, a ruler came in and knelt before him, saying, “My daughter has just died, but come and lay your hand on her, and she will live.” While he was saying this, a synagogue leader came and knelt before him and said, “My daughter has just died. But come and put your hand on her, and she will live.”
19 Jesus got up and began to accompany the ruler, with His disciples. And Jesus rose and followed him, with his disciples. Jesus got up and went with him, and so did his disciples.
20 Then a woman who had suffered from a hemorrhage for twelve years came up behind Him and touched the [tassel] fringe of His outer robe; And behold, a woman who had suffered from a discharge of blood for twelve years came up behind him and touched the fringe of his garment, Just then a woman who had been subject to bleeding for twelve years came up behind him and touched the edge of his cloak.
21 for she had been saying to herself, “If I only touch His outer robe, I will be healed.” for she said to herself, “If I only touch his garment, I will be made well.” She said to herself, “If I only touch his cloak, I will be healed.”
22 But Jesus turning and seeing her said, “Take courage, daughter; your [personal trust and confident] faith [in Me] has made you well.” And at once the woman was [completely] healed. Jesus turned, and seeing her he said, “Take heart, daughter; your faith has made you well.” And instantly the woman was made well. Jesus turned and saw her. “Take heart, daughter,” he said, “your faith has healed you.” And the woman was healed at that moment.
23 When Jesus came to the ruler’s house, and saw the flute players [who were professional, hired mourners] and the [grieving] crowd making an uproar, And when Jesus came to the ruler’s house and saw the flute players and the crowd making a commotion, When Jesus entered the synagogue leader’s house and saw the noisy crowd and people playing pipes,
24 He said, “Go away; for the girl is not dead, but is sleeping.” And they laughed and jeered at Him. he said, “Go away, for the girl is not dead but sleeping.” And they laughed at him. he said, “Go away. The girl is not dead but asleep.” But they laughed at him.
25 But when the crowd had been sent outside, Jesus went in and took her by the hand, and the girl got up. But when the crowd had been put outside, he went in and took her by the hand, and the girl arose. After the crowd had been put outside, he went in and took the girl by the hand, and she got up.
26 And the news about this spread throughout all that district. And the report of this went through all that district. News of this spread through all that region.
27 As Jesus went on from there, two blind men followed Him, screaming loudly, “Have mercy and compassion on us, Son of David (Messiah)!” And as Jesus passed on from there, two blind men followed him, crying aloud, “Have mercy on us, Son of David.” As Jesus went on from there, two blind men followed him, calling out, “Have mercy on us, Son of David!”
28 When He went into the house, the blind men came up to Him, and Jesus said to them, “Do you believe [with a deep, abiding trust] that I am able to do this?” They said to Him, “Yes, Lord.” When he entered the house, the blind men came to him, and Jesus said to them, “Do you believe that I am able to do this?” They said to him, “Yes, Lord.” When he had gone indoors, the blind men came to him, and he asked them, “Do you believe that I am able to do this?” “Yes, Lord,” they replied.
29 Then He touched their eyes, saying, “According to your faith [your trust and confidence in My power and My ability to heal] it will be done to you.” Then he touched their eyes, saying, “According to your faith be it done to you.” Then he touched their eyes and said, “According to your faith let it be done to you|;
30 And their eyes were opened. And Jesus sternly warned them: “See that no one knows this!” And their eyes were opened. And Jesus sternly warned them, “See that no one knows about it.” and their sight was restored. Jesus warned them sternly, “See that no one knows about this.”
31 But they went out and spread the news about Him throughout that whole district. But they went away and spread his fame through all that district. But they went out and spread the news about him all over that region.
32 While they were going away, a mute, demon-possessed man was brought to Jesus. As they were going away, behold, a demon-oppressed man who was mute was brought to him. While they were going out, a man who was demon-possessed and could not talk was brought to Jesus.
33 And when the demon was driven out [by Jesus], the mute man spoke; and the crowds wondered in amazement, saying, “Never before has anything like this [miracle] been seen in Israel.” And when the demon had been cast out, the mute man spoke. And the crowds marveled, saying, “Never was anything like this seen in Israel.” And when the demon was driven out, the man who had been mute spoke. The crowd was amazed and said, “Nothing like this has ever been seen in Israel.”
34 But the Pharisees were saying, “He casts out the demons by [the power of] the ruler of demons.” But the Pharisees said, “He casts out demons by the prince of demons.” But the Pharisees said, “It is by the prince of demons that he drives out demons.”
35 Jesus went throughout all the cities and villages [in Galilee], teaching in their synagogues and proclaiming the good news (gospel) of the kingdom, and healing every kind of disease and every kind of sickness [His words and His works reflecting His Messiahship]. And Jesus went throughout all the cities and villages, teaching in their synagogues and proclaiming the gospel of the kingdom and healing every disease and every affliction. 36 When He saw the crowds, He was moved with compassion and pity for them, because they were dispirited and distressed, like sheep without a shepherd. 37 Then He said to His disciples, “The harvest is [indeed] plentiful, but the workers are few. Then he said to his disciples, “The harvest is plentiful, but the laborers are few; Then he said to his disciples, “The harvest is plentiful but the workers are few.
38 So pray to the Lord of the harvest to send out workers into His harvest.” therefore pray earnestly to the Lord of the harvest to send out laborers into his harvest.” Ask the Lord of the harvest, therefore, to send out workers into his harvest field.”
