1 And it came to pass, when He went into the house of one of the rulers of the Pharisees on a sabbath to eat bread, that they were watching Him. One Sabbath, when he went to dine at the house of a ruler of the Pharisees, they were watching him carefully. One Sabbath, when Jesus went to eat in the house of a prominent Pharisee, he was being carefully watched.
2 And, behold, there was before Him a certain man who had the dropsy. And behold, there was a man before him who had dropsy. There in front of him was a man suffering from abnormal swelling of his body.
3 And, answering, Jesus spake to the lawyers and Pharisees, saying, "Is it lawful on the sabbath to heal or not?" And Jesus responded to the lawyers and Pharisees, saying, “Is it lawful to heal on the Sabbath, or not?” Jesus asked the Pharisees and experts in the law, “Is it lawful to heal on the Sabbath or not?”
4 But they were silent. And, taking hold of him , He healed him, and let him go; But they remained silent. Then he took him and healed him and sent him away. But they remained silent. So taking hold of the man, he healed him and sent him on his way.
5 and He said to them, "Who of you shall have an ass or an ox fall into a well, and he will not straight-way draw him up on a sabbath day?" And he said to them, “Which of you, having a son or an ox that has fallen into a well on a Sabbath day, will not immediately pull him out?” Then he asked them, “If one of you has a child or an ox that falls into a well on the Sabbath day, will you not immediately pull it out?”
6 And they were not able to return an answer to these things. And they could not reply to these things. And they had nothing to say.
7 And He spake a parable to those who were bidden, when He observed how they were choosing out the first seats; saying to them, Now he told a parable to those who were invited, when he noticed how they chose the places of honor, saying to them, When he noticed how the guests picked the places of honor at the table, he told them this parable:
8 "When you are bidden by any one to a marriage feast, sit not on the first seat, lest possibly a more honorable man than you may have been invited by him; “When you are invited by someone to a wedding feast, do not sit down in a place of honor, lest someone more distinguished than you be invited by him, “When someone invites you to a wedding feast, do not take the place of honor, for a person more distinguished than you may have been invited.
9 and he who bade you and him, coming, shall say to you, 'Give place to this man;' and then you shall, with shame, begin to occupy the lowest place. and he who invited you both will come and say to you, ‘Give your place to this person,’ and then you will begin with shame to take the lowest place. If so, the host who invited both of you will come and say to you, ‘Give this person your seat.’ Then, humiliated, you will have to take the least important place.
10 But, when you are invited, going, sit in the lowest place, that, when he who invited you comes, he may say to you, 'Friend, go up higher;' then you will have glory in the presence of all who are reclining at table with you; But when you are invited, go and sit in the lowest place, so that when your host comes he may say to you, ‘Friend, move up higher.’ Then you will be honored in the presence of all who sit at table with you. But when you are invited, take the lowest place, so that when your host comes, he will say to you, ‘Friend, move up to a better place.’ Then you will be honored in the presence of all the other guests.
11 because every one who exalts himself shall be humbled, and he who humbles himself shall be exalted." For everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, and he who humbles himself will be exalted.” For all those who exalt themselves will be humbled, and those who humble themselves will be exalted.”
12 And He said to him also who had invited him, "When you make a dinner or a supper, call not your friends, nor your brethren, nor your kindred, nor your rich neighbors; lest they also invite you in return, and a recompense be made you; He said also to the man who had invited him, “When you give a dinner or a banquet, do not invite your friends or your brothers or your relatives or rich neighbors, lest they also invite you in return and you be repaid. Then Jesus said to his host, “When you give a luncheon or dinner, do not invite your friends, your brothers or sisters, your relatives, or your rich neighbors; if you do, they may invite you back and so you will be repaid.
13 but, when you make a feast, call the poor, maimed, lame, blind; But when you give a feast, invite the poor, the crippled, the lame, the blind, But when you give a banquet, invite the poor, the crippled, the lame, the blind,
14 and happy shall you be; because they have not wherewith to recompense you; for recompense will be made to you in the resurrection of the righteous." and you will be blessed, because they cannot repay you. For you will be repaid at the resurrection of the just.” and you will be blessed. Although they cannot repay you, you will be repaid at the resurrection of the righteous.”
15 And one of those reclining with Him , hearing these things, said to Him, "happy is he who shall eat bread in the Kingdom of God!" When one of those who reclined at table with him heard these things, he said to him, “Blessed is everyone who will eat bread in the kingdom of God!” When one of those at the table with him heard this, he said to Jesus, “Blessed is the one who will eat at the feast in the kingdom of God.”
16 But He said to him, "A certain man was making a great supper, and invited many. But he said to him, “A man once gave a great banquet and invited many. Jesus replied: “A certain man was preparing a great banquet and invited many guests.
17 And he sent forth his servant, at the hour of the supper, to say to those invited, 'Come; because all things are now ready.' And at the time for the banquet he sent his servant to say to those who had been invited, ‘Come, for everything is now ready.’ At the time of the banquet he sent his servant to tell those who had been invited, ‘Come, for everything is now ready.’
18 "And they all, with one consent , began to make excuse. The first said to him, 'I bought a field, and I must go out to see it; I pray you, have me excused.' But they all alike began to make excuses. The first said to him, ‘I have bought a field, and I must go out and see it. Please have me excused.’ “But they all alike began to make excuses. The first said, ‘I have just bought a field, and I must go and see it. Please excuse me.’
19 And another said, 'I bought five yoke of oxen, and I am going to prove them; I pray you, have me excused.' And another said, ‘I have bought five yoke of oxen, and I go to examine them. Please have me excused.’ “Another said, ‘I have just bought five yoke of oxen, and I’m on my way to try them out. Please excuse me.’
20 And another said, 'I married a wife; and, therefore, I cannot come.' And another said, ‘I have married a wife, and therefore I cannot come.’ “Still another said, ‘I just got married, so I can’t come.’
21 "And, coming near, the servant reported these things to his lord. Then the householder, being angry, said to his servant, 'Go out quickly into the streets and lanes of the city; and bring in here the poor, and maimed, and blind, and lame.' So the servant came and reported these things to his master. Then the master of the house became angry and said to his servant, ‘Go out quickly to the streets and lanes of the city, and bring in the poor and crippled and blind and lame.’ “The servant came back and reported this to his master. Then the owner of the house became angry and ordered his servant, ‘Go out quickly into the streets and alleys of the town and bring in the poor, the crippled, the blind and the lame.’
22 And the servant said, 'Sir, what you ordered has been done, and still there is room.' And the servant said, ‘Sir, what you commanded has been done, and still there is room.’ “’Sir,’ the servant said, ‘what you ordered has been done, but there is still room.’
23 And the lord said to the servant, 'Go forth into the highways and hedges, and compel them to come in, that my house may be filled; And the master said to the servant, ‘Go out to the highways and hedges and compel people to come in, that my house may be filled. “Then the master told his servant, ‘Go out to the roads and country lanes and compel them to come in, so that my house will be full.
24 for I say to you, that no one of those men who have been invited shall taste of my supper." For I tell you, none of those men who were invited shall taste my banquet.’” I tell you, not one of those who were invited will get a taste of my banquet.’”
25 Now there were journeying with Him great multitudes; and, turning, He said to them, Now great crowds accompanied him, and he turned and said to them, Large crowds were traveling with Jesus, and turning to them he said:
26 "If any one comes to Me, and hates not his own father, and mother, and wife, and children, and brothers, and sisters, and, further, his own soul also, he cannot be My disciple. “If anyone comes to me and does not hate his own father and mother and wife and children and brothers and sisters, yes, and even his own life, he cannot be my disciple. “If anyone comes to me and does not hate father and mother, wife and children, brothers and sisters—yes, even their own life—such a person cannot be my disciple.
27 And whosoever does not bear his own cross, and come after Me, cannot be My disciple. Whoever does not bear his own cross and come after me cannot be my disciple. And whoever does not carry their cross and follow me cannot be my disciple.
28 For who of you, wishing to build a tower, does not, first, sitting down, calculate the expense, whether he has enough for its completion? For which of you, desiring to build a tower, does not first sit down and count the cost, whether he has enough to complete it? “Suppose one of you wants to build a tower. Won’t you first sit down and estimate the cost to see if you have enough money to complete it?
29 lest, perhaps, having laid a foundation, and not being able to finish it , all who behold begin to mock him, Otherwise, when he has laid a foundation and is not able to finish, all who see it begin to mock him, For if you lay the foundation and are not able to finish it, everyone who sees it will ridicule you,
30 saying, 'This man began to build, and was not able to finish!' saying, ‘This man began to build and was not able to finish.’ saying, ‘This person began to build and wasn’t able to finish.’
31 "Or what king, going on to engage another king in war, does not, sitting down, first take counsel, whether he is able, with ten thousand, to meet him who is coming against him with twenty thousand? Or what king, going out to encounter another king in war, will not sit down first and deliberate whether he is able with ten thousand to meet him who comes against him with twenty thousand? “Or suppose a king is about to go to war against another king. Won’t he first sit down and consider whether he is able with ten thousand men to oppose the one coming against him with twenty thousand?
32 And, if not by any means, while he is yet afar off, sending an embassy, he asks conditions of peace. And if not, while the other is yet a great way off, he sends a delegation and asks for terms of peace. If he is not able, he will send a delegation while the other is still a long way off and will ask for terms of peace.
33 "So, therefore, every one of you who does not renounce all his own goods, cannot be My disciple. So therefore, any one of you who does not renounce all that he has cannot be my disciple. In the same way, those of you who do not give up everything you have cannot be my disciples.
34 Salt, therefore, is good; but if even the salt become tasteless, with what shall it be seasoned? “Salt is good, but if salt has lost its taste, how shall its saltiness be restored? “Salt is good, but if it loses its saltiness, how can it be made salty again?
35 It is fit neither for the land nor for manure: they throw it without. He that has ears to hear, let him hear!" It is of no use either for the soil or for the manure pile. It is thrown away. He who has ears to hear, let him hear.” It is fit neither for the soil nor for the manure pile; it is thrown out. “Whoever has ears to hear, let them hear.”
