1 One Sabbath, Jesus went to the house of a leader of the Pharisees to eat a meal. The guests were watching Jesus closely. One Sabbath, when he went to dine at the house of a ruler of the Pharisees, they were watching him carefully. One Sabbath, when Jesus went to eat in the house of a prominent Pharisee, he was being carefully watched.
2 A man whose body was swollen with fluid suddenly appeared in front of him. And behold, there was a man before him who had dropsy. There in front of him was a man suffering from abnormal swelling of his body.
3 So Jesus asked the Pharisees and experts in the Law, |Is it lawful to heal on the Sabbath or not?| And Jesus responded to the lawyers and Pharisees, saying, “Is it lawful to heal on the Sabbath, or not?” Jesus asked the Pharisees and experts in the law, “Is it lawful to heal on the Sabbath or not?”
4 But they kept silent. So he took hold of the man, healed him, and sent him away. But they remained silent. Then he took him and healed him and sent him away. But they remained silent. So taking hold of the man, he healed him and sent him on his way.
5 Then he asked them, |If your son or ox falls into a well on the Sabbath day, you would pull him out immediately, wouldn't you?| And he said to them, “Which of you, having a son or an ox that has fallen into a well on a Sabbath day, will not immediately pull him out?” Then he asked them, “If one of you has a child or an ox that falls into a well on the Sabbath day, will you not immediately pull it out?”
6 And they couldn't argue with him about this. And they could not reply to these things. And they had nothing to say.
7 When Jesus noticed how the guests were choosing the places of honor, he told them a parable. Now he told a parable to those who were invited, when he noticed how they chose the places of honor, saying to them, When he noticed how the guests picked the places of honor at the table, he told them this parable:
8 |When you are invited by someone to a wedding banquet, don't sit down at the place of honor in case someone more important than you was invited by the host. “When you are invited by someone to a wedding feast, do not sit down in a place of honor, lest someone more distinguished than you be invited by him, “When someone invites you to a wedding feast, do not take the place of honor, for a person more distinguished than you may have been invited.
9 Then the host who invited both of you would come to you and say, 'Give this person your place.' In disgrace, you would have to take the place of least honor. and he who invited you both will come and say to you, ‘Give your place to this person,’ and then you will begin with shame to take the lowest place. If so, the host who invited both of you will come and say to you, ‘Give this person your seat.’ Then, humiliated, you will have to take the least important place.
10 But when you are invited, go and sit down at the place of least honor. Then, when your host comes, he will tell you, 'Friend, move up higher,' and you will be honored in the presence of everyone who eats with you. But when you are invited, go and sit in the lowest place, so that when your host comes he may say to you, ‘Friend, move up higher.’ Then you will be honored in the presence of all who sit at table with you. But when you are invited, take the lowest place, so that when your host comes, he will say to you, ‘Friend, move up to a better place.’ Then you will be honored in the presence of all the other guests.
11 Because everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, but the person who humbles himself will be exalted.| For everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, and he who humbles himself will be exalted.” For all those who exalt themselves will be humbled, and those who humble themselves will be exalted.”
12 Then he told the man who had invited him, |When you give a luncheon or a dinner, stop inviting only your friends, brothers, relatives, or rich neighbors. Otherwise, they may invite you in return and you would be repaid. He said also to the man who had invited him, “When you give a dinner or a banquet, do not invite your friends or your brothers or your relatives or rich neighbors, lest they also invite you in return and you be repaid. Then Jesus said to his host, “When you give a luncheon or dinner, do not invite your friends, your brothers or sisters, your relatives, or your rich neighbors; if you do, they may invite you back and so you will be repaid.
13 Instead, when you give a banquet, make it your habit to invite the poor, the crippled, the lame, and the blind. But when you give a feast, invite the poor, the crippled, the lame, the blind, But when you give a banquet, invite the poor, the crippled, the lame, the blind,
14 Then you will be blessed because they can't repay you. And you will be repaid when the righteous are resurrected.| and you will be blessed, because they cannot repay you. For you will be repaid at the resurrection of the just.” and you will be blessed. Although they cannot repay you, you will be repaid at the resurrection of the righteous.”
15 Now one of those eating with him heard this and told him, |How blessed is the person who will eat in the kingdom of God!| When one of those who reclined at table with him heard these things, he said to him, “Blessed is everyone who will eat bread in the kingdom of God!” When one of those at the table with him heard this, he said to Jesus, “Blessed is the one who will eat at the feast in the kingdom of God.”
16 Jesus told him, |A man gave a large banquet and invited many people. But he said to him, “A man once gave a great banquet and invited many. Jesus replied: “A certain man was preparing a great banquet and invited many guests.
17 When it was time for the banquet, he sent his servant to tell those who were invited, 'Come! Everything is now ready.' And at the time for the banquet he sent his servant to say to those who had been invited, ‘Come, for everything is now ready.’ At the time of the banquet he sent his servant to tell those who had been invited, ‘Come, for everything is now ready.’
18 Every single one of them began asking to be excused. The first told him, 'I bought a field, and I need to go out and inspect it. Please excuse me.' But they all alike began to make excuses. The first said to him, ‘I have bought a field, and I must go out and see it. Please have me excused.’ “But they all alike began to make excuses. The first said, ‘I have just bought a field, and I must go and see it. Please excuse me.’
19 Another said, 'I bought five pairs of oxen, and I'm on my way to try them out. Please excuse me.' And another said, ‘I have bought five yoke of oxen, and I go to examine them. Please have me excused.’ “Another said, ‘I have just bought five yoke of oxen, and I’m on my way to try them out. Please excuse me.’
20 Still another said, 'I recently got married, so I can't come.' And another said, ‘I have married a wife, and therefore I cannot come.’ “Still another said, ‘I just got married, so I can’t come.’
21 |So the servant went back and reported all this to his master. Then the master of the house became angry and told his servant, 'Go quickly into the streets and alleys of the town and bring back the poor, the crippled, the blind, and the lame.' So the servant came and reported these things to his master. Then the master of the house became angry and said to his servant, ‘Go out quickly to the streets and lanes of the city, and bring in the poor and crippled and blind and lame.’ “The servant came back and reported this to his master. Then the owner of the house became angry and ordered his servant, ‘Go out quickly into the streets and alleys of the town and bring in the poor, the crippled, the blind and the lame.’
22 The servant said, 'Sir, what you ordered has been done, and there is still room.' And the servant said, ‘Sir, what you commanded has been done, and still there is room.’ “’Sir,’ the servant said, ‘what you ordered has been done, but there is still room.’
23 Then the master told the servant, 'Go out into the streets and the lanes and make the people come in, so that my house may be full. And the master said to the servant, ‘Go out to the highways and hedges and compel people to come in, that my house may be filled. “Then the master told his servant, ‘Go out to the roads and country lanes and compel them to come in, so that my house will be full.
24 Because I tell all of you, none of those men who were invited will taste anything at my banquet.'| For I tell you, none of those men who were invited shall taste my banquet.’” I tell you, not one of those who were invited will get a taste of my banquet.’”
25 Now large crowds were traveling with Jesus. He turned and told them, Now great crowds accompanied him, and he turned and said to them, Large crowds were traveling with Jesus, and turning to them he said:
26 |If anyone comes to me and does not hate his father, mother, wife, children, brothers, and sisters, as well as his own life, he can't be my disciple. “If anyone comes to me and does not hate his own father and mother and wife and children and brothers and sisters, yes, and even his own life, he cannot be my disciple. “If anyone comes to me and does not hate father and mother, wife and children, brothers and sisters—yes, even their own life—such a person cannot be my disciple.
27 Whoever doesn't carry his cross and follow me can't be my disciple. Whoever does not bear his own cross and come after me cannot be my disciple. And whoever does not carry their cross and follow me cannot be my disciple.
28 |Suppose one of you wants to build a tower. He will first sit down and estimate the cost to see whether he has enough money to finish it, won't he? For which of you, desiring to build a tower, does not first sit down and count the cost, whether he has enough to complete it? “Suppose one of you wants to build a tower. Won’t you first sit down and estimate the cost to see if you have enough money to complete it?
29 Otherwise, if he lays a foundation and can't finish the building, everyone who watches will begin to ridicule him Otherwise, when he has laid a foundation and is not able to finish, all who see it begin to mock him, For if you lay the foundation and are not able to finish it, everyone who sees it will ridicule you,
30 and say, 'This person started a building but couldn't finish it.' saying, ‘This man began to build and was not able to finish.’ saying, ‘This person began to build and wasn’t able to finish.’
31 |Or suppose a king is going to war against another king. He will first sit down and consider whether with 10,000 men he can fight the one coming against him with 20,000 men, won't he? Or what king, going out to encounter another king in war, will not sit down first and deliberate whether he is able with ten thousand to meet him who comes against him with twenty thousand? “Or suppose a king is about to go to war against another king. Won’t he first sit down and consider whether he is able with ten thousand men to oppose the one coming against him with twenty thousand?
32 If he can't, he will send a delegation to ask for terms of peace while the other king is still far away. And if not, while the other is yet a great way off, he sends a delegation and asks for terms of peace. If he is not able, he will send a delegation while the other is still a long way off and will ask for terms of peace.
33 In the same way, none of you can be my disciple unless he gives up all his possessions.| So therefore, any one of you who does not renounce all that he has cannot be my disciple. In the same way, those of you who do not give up everything you have cannot be my disciples.
34 |Now, salt is good. But if the salt should lose its taste, how can its flavor be restored? “Salt is good, but if salt has lost its taste, how shall its saltiness be restored? “Salt is good, but if it loses its saltiness, how can it be made salty again?
35 It's suitable neither for the soil nor for the manure pile. People throw it away. Let the person who has ears to hear, listen!| It is of no use either for the soil or for the manure pile. It is thrown away. He who has ears to hear, let him hear.” It is fit neither for the soil nor for the manure pile; it is thrown out. “Whoever has ears to hear, let them hear.”
