1	Having spoken these things, Jesus went forth with His disciples beyond the winter-brook Kidron, where was a garden, into which He entered Himself and His disciples.	When Jesus had spoken these words, he went out with his disciples across the brook Kidron, where there was a garden, which he and his disciples entered.	When he had finished praying, Jesus left with his disciples and crossed the Kidron Valley. On the other side there was a garden, and he and his disciples went into it.
2	And Judas also, who betrayed Him, knew the place; because Jesus ofttimes resorted thither with His disciples.	Now Judas, who betrayed him, also knew the place, for Jesus often met there with his disciples.	Now Judas, who betrayed him, knew the place, because Jesus had often met there with his disciples.
3	Judas, therefore, having received the band of soldiers and officers from the high priests and the Pharisees, comes thither with lanterns, and torches, and weapons.	So Judas, having procured a band of soldiers and some officers from the chief priests and the Pharisees, went there with lanterns and torches and weapons.	So Judas came to the garden, guiding a detachment of soldiers and some officials from the chief priests and the Pharisees. They were carrying torches, lanterns and weapons.
4	Jesus, therefore, knowing all things that were coming upon Him, went forth, and saith to them, "Whom seek ye?"	Then Jesus, knowing all that would happen to him, came forward and said to them, “Whom do you seek?”	Jesus, knowing all that was going to happen to him, went out and asked them, “Who is it you want?”
5	They answered Him, "Jesus, the Nazarene." Jesus saith to them, "I am He ." And Judas also, who betrayed Him, was standing with them.	They answered him, “Jesus of Nazareth.” Jesus said to them, “I am he.” Judas, who betrayed him, was standing with them.	“Jesus of Nazareth,” they replied. “I am he,” Jesus said. (And Judas the traitor was standing there with them.)
6	When, therefore, He said to them, "I am He ," they went backward, and fell to the ground.	When Jesus said to them, “I am he,” they drew back and fell to the ground.	When Jesus said, “I am he,” they drew back and fell to the ground.
7	Again, therefore, He asked them, "Whom seek ye?" And they said, "Jesus, the Nazarene."	So he asked them again, “Whom do you seek?” And they said, “Jesus of Nazareth.”	Again he asked them, “Who is it you want?” “Jesus of Nazareth,” they said.
8	Jesus answered, "I told you that I am He ; if, therefore, ye are seeking Me, permit these to go their way;"	Jesus answered, “I told you that I am he. So, if you seek me, let these men go.”	Jesus answered, “I told you that I am he. If you are looking for me, then let these men go.”
9	that the word might be fulfilled, which He spake, "Of those whom Thou hast given Me, I lost none."	This was to fulfill the word that he had spoken: “Of those whom you gave me I have lost not one.”	This happened so that the words he had spoken would be fulfilled: “I have not lost one of those you gave me.”
10	Simon Peter, therefore, having a sword, drew it, and struck the high priest's servant, and cut off his right ear. Now the servant's name was Malchus.	Then Simon Peter, having a sword, drew it and struck the high priest’s servant and cut off his right ear. (The servant’s name was Malchus.)	Then Simon Peter, who had a sword, drew it and struck the high priest’s servant, cutting off his right ear. (The servant’s name was Malchus.)
11	Jesus, therefore, said to Peter, "Put up the sword into the sheathe. The cup which the Father hath given Me, shall I not drink it?"	So Jesus said to Peter, “Put your sword into its sheath; shall I not drink the cup that the Father has given me?”	Jesus commanded Peter, “Put your sword away! Shall I not drink the cup the Father has given me?”
12	So the band, and the chief captain, and the officers of the Jews, seized Jesus, and bound Him,	So the band of soldiers and their captain and the officers of the Jews arrested Jesus and bound him.	Then the detachment of soldiers with its commander and the Jewish officials arrested Jesus. They bound him
13	and led Him to Annas first; for he was father-in-law of Caiaphas, who was high priest that year.	First they led him to Annas, for he was the father-in-law of Caiaphas, who was high priest that year.	and brought him first to Annas, who was the father-in-law of Caiaphas, the high priest that year.
14	And it was Caiaphas who counseled the Jews, that it was expedient that one man should die for the people.	It was Caiaphas who had advised the Jews that it would be expedient that one man should die for the people.	Caiaphas was the one who had advised the Jewish leaders that it would be good if one man died for the people.
15	And Simon Peter and another disciple were following Jesus. And that disciple was known to the high priest, and went in with Jesus into the court of the high priest;	Simon Peter followed Jesus, and so did another disciple. Since that disciple was known to the high priest, he entered with Jesus into the courtyard of the high priest,	Simon Peter and another disciple were following Jesus. Because this disciple was known to the high priest, he went with Jesus into the high priest’s courtyard,
16	But Peter was standing at the door without. So the other disciple, who was known to the high priest, went out and spake to her that kept the door, and brought in Peter.	but Peter stood outside at the door. So the other disciple, who was known to the high priest, went out and spoke to the servant girl who kept watch at the door, and brought Peter in.	but Peter had to wait outside at the door. The other disciple, who was known to the high priest, came back, spoke to the servant girl on duty there and brought Peter in.
17	The maiden door-keeper, therefore, says to Peter, Are you also one of this Man's disciples?" He says, "I am not."	The servant girl at the door said to Peter, “You also are not one of this man’s disciples, are you?” He said, “I am not.”	“You aren’t one of this man’s disciples too, are you?” she asked Peter. He replied, “I am not.”
18	And the servants and the officers were standing there , having made a fire of coals (because it was cold), and were warming themselves; and Peter also was with them, standing and warming himself.	Now the servants and officers had made a charcoal fire, because it was cold, and they were standing and warming themselves. Peter also was with them, standing and warming himself.	It was cold, and the servants and officials stood around a fire they had made to keep warm. Peter also was standing with them, warming himself.
19	The high priest, therefore, asked Jesus concerning His disciples, and concerning His teaching.	The high priest then questioned Jesus about his disciples and his teaching.	Meanwhile, the high priest questioned Jesus about his disciples and his teaching.
20	Jesus answered, "I have spoken openly to the world; I always taught in the synagogue and in the temple, where all the Jews assemble together; and in secret I spake nothing.	Jesus answered him, “I have spoken openly to the world. I have always taught in synagogues and in the temple, where all Jews come together. I have said nothing in secret.	“I have spoken openly to the world,” Jesus replied. “I always taught in synagogues or at the temple, where all the Jews come together. I said nothing in secret.
21	Why do you ask Me? Ask those who have heard, what I spake to them; behold, they know the things which I said."	Why do you ask me? Ask those who have heard me what I said to them; they know what I said.”	Why question me? Ask those who heard me. Surely they know what I said.”
22	And, when He had said this, one of the officers standing by gave Jesus a blow with a rod, saying, "Dost Thou answer the high priest thus!"	When he had said these things, one of the officers standing by struck Jesus with his hand, saying, “Is that how you answer the high priest?”	When Jesus said this, one of the officials nearby slapped him in the face. “Is this the way you answer the high priest?” he demanded.
23	Jesus answered him, "If I spake evil, testify concerning the evil; but, if well, why do you beat Me?"	Jesus answered him, “If what I said is wrong, bear witness about the wrong; but if what I said is right, why do you strike me?”	“If I said something wrong,” Jesus replied, “testify as to what is wrong. But if I spoke the truth, why did you strike me?”
24	Annas, therefore, sent Him bound to Caiaphas the high priest.	Annas then sent him bound to Caiaphas the high priest.	Then Annas sent him bound to Caiaphas the high priest.
25	And Simon Peter was standing and warming himself. They said, therefore, to him, "Are you also one of His disciples?" He denied, and said, "I am not."	Now Simon Peter was standing and warming himself. So they said to him, “You also are not one of his disciples, are you?” He denied it and said, “I am not.”	Meanwhile, Simon Peter was still standing there warming himself. So they asked him, “You aren’t one of his disciples too, are you?” He denied it, saying, “I am not.”
26	One of the servants of the high priest, being a kinsman of him whose ear Peter cut off, says, "Did not I see you in the garden with Him?"	One of the servants of the high priest, a relative of the man whose ear Peter had cut off, asked, “Did I not see you in the garden with him?”	One of the high priest’s servants, a relative of the man whose ear Peter had cut off, challenged him, “Didn’t I see you with him in the garden?”
27	Again, therefore, Peter denied; and straightway a cock crowed.	Peter again denied it, and at once a rooster crowed.	Again Peter denied it, and at that moment a rooster began to crow.
28	They led Jesus, therefore, from Caiaphas into the Praetorium; and it was early; and they themselves entered not into the Praetorium, that they might not be defiled, but might eat the passover.	Then they led Jesus from the house of Caiaphas to the governor’s headquarters. It was early morning. They themselves did not enter the governor’s headquarters, so that they would not be defiled, but could eat the Passover.	Then the Jewish leaders took Jesus from Caiaphas to the palace of the Roman governor. By now it was early morning, and to avoid ceremonial uncleanness they did not enter the palace, because they wanted to be able to eat the Passover.
29	Pilate, therefore, went out to them, and says, "What accusation do ye bring against this Man?"	So Pilate went outside to them and said, “What accusation do you bring against this man?”	So Pilate came out to them and asked, “What charges are you bringing against this man?”
30	They answered and said to him, "If this Man were not an evil-doer, we would not have delivered Him up to you."	They answered him, “If this man were not doing evil, we would not have delivered him over to you.”	“If he were not a criminal,” they replied, “we would not have handed him over to you.”
31	Pilate, therefore, said to them, "Take Him yourselves, and judge Him according to your law." The Jews said to him, "It is not lawful for us to kill anyone:"	Pilate said to them, “Take him yourselves and judge him by your own law.” The Jews said to him, “It is not lawful for us to put anyone to death.”	Pilate said, “Take him yourselves and judge him by your own law.” “But we have no right to execute anyone,” they objected.
32	that the word of Jesus might he fulfilled, which He spake, signifying by what manner of death He was about to die.	This was to fulfill the word that Jesus had spoken to show by what kind of death he was going to die.	This took place to fulfill what Jesus had said about the kind of death he was going to die.
33	Pilate, therefore, entered again into the Praetorium, and called Jesus, and said to Him, "Art Thou the King of the Jews?"	So Pilate entered his headquarters again and called Jesus and said to him, “Are you the King of the Jews?”	Pilate then went back inside the palace, summoned Jesus and asked him, “Are you the king of the Jews?”
34	Jesus answered, "Do you say this of yourself, or did others tell you concerning Me?"	Jesus answered, “Do you say this of your own accord, or did others say it to you about me?”	“Is that your own idea,” Jesus asked, “or did others talk to you about me?”
35	Pilate answered, "Am I a Jew? Thy own nation, and the high priests delivered Thee up to me: what didst Thou do?"	Pilate answered, “Am I a Jew? Your own nation and the chief priests have delivered you over to me. What have you done?”	“Am I a Jew?” Pilate replied. “Your own people and chief priests handed you over to me. What is it you have done?”
36	Jesus answered, "My Kingdom is not of this world. If My Kingdom were of this world, My servants would fight, that I should not be delivered to the Jews; but now My kingdom is not from hence."	Jesus answered, “My kingdom is not of this world. If my kingdom were of this world, my servants would have been fighting, that I might not be delivered over to the Jews. But my kingdom is not from the world.”	Jesus said, “My kingdom is not of this world. If it were, my servants would fight to prevent my arrest by the Jewish leaders. But now my kingdom is from another place.”
37	Pilate, therefore, said to Him, "Art Thou, then, a King?" Jesus answered, "You say that I am a King. To this end have I been born, and to this end have I come into the world, that I should testify to the truth. Every one who is of the truth hears My voice."	Then Pilate said to him, “So you are a king?” Jesus answered, “You say that I am a king. For this purpose I was born and for this purpose I have come into the world—to bear witness to the truth. Everyone who is of the truth listens to my voice.”	“You are a king, then!” said Pilate. Jesus answered, “You say that I am a king. In fact, the reason I was born and came into the world is to testify to the truth. Everyone on the side of truth listens to me.”
38	Pilate says to Him, "What is truth?" And, having said this, he went out again to the Jews, and says to them, "I find no crime in Him.	Pilate said to him, “What is truth?” After he had said this, he went back outside to the Jews and told them, “I find no guilt in him.	“What is truth?” retorted Pilate. With this he went out again to the Jews gathered there and said, “I find no basis for a charge against him.
39	But ye have a custom, that I should release to you one at the passover. Do ye wish, therefore, that I release to you the King of the Jews?"	But you have a custom that I should release one man for you at the Passover. So do you want me to release to you the King of the Jews?”	But it is your custom for me to release to you one prisoner at the time of the Passover. Do you want me to release ‘the king of the Jews’?”
40	They cried out, therefore, again, saying, "Not this Man, but Barabbas!" Now Barabbas was a robber.	They cried out again, “Not this man, but Barabbas!” Now Barabbas was a robber.	They shouted back, “No, not him! Give us Barabbas!” Now Barabbas had taken part in an uprising.
