1 When Jesus had spoken these words, He went forth with His disciples to the other side of the Kidron Valley, where there was a garden, into which He entered with His disciples. When Jesus had spoken these words, he went out with his disciples across the brook Kidron, where there was a garden, which he and his disciples entered. When he had finished praying, Jesus left with his disciples and crossed the Kidron Valley. On the other side there was a garden, and he and his disciples went into it.
2 Now Judas also, who was betraying Him, knew the place, for Jesus had often gathered there with His disciples. Now Judas, who betrayed him, also knew the place, for Jesus often met there with his disciples. Now Judas, who betrayed him, knew the place, because Jesus had often met there with his disciples.
3 Judas then, having received the Roman cohort and officers from the chief priests and the Pharisees, came there with lanterns and torches and weapons. So Judas, having procured a band of soldiers and some officers from the chief priests and the Pharisees, went there with lanterns and torches and weapons. So Judas came to the garden, guiding a detachment of soldiers and some officials from the chief priests and the Pharisees. They were carrying torches, lanterns and weapons.
4 So Jesus, knowing all the things that were coming upon Him, went forth and said to them, “Whom do you seek?” Then Jesus, knowing all that would happen to him, came forward and said to them, “Whom do you seek?” Jesus, knowing all that was going to happen to him, went out and asked them, “Who is it you want?”
5 They answered Him, “Jesus the Nazarene.” He said to them, “I am He.” And Judas also, who was betraying Him, was standing with them. They answered him, “Jesus of Nazareth.” Jesus said to them, “I am he.” Judas, who betrayed him, was standing with them. “Jesus of Nazareth,” they replied. “I am he,” Jesus said. (And Judas the traitor was standing there with them.)
6 So when He said to them, “I am He,” they drew back and fell to the ground. When Jesus said to them, “I am he,” they drew back and fell to the ground. When Jesus said, “I am he,” they drew back and fell to the ground.
7 Therefore He again asked them, “Whom do you seek?” And they said, “Jesus the Nazarene.” So he asked them again, “Whom do you seek?” And they said, “Jesus of Nazareth.” Again he asked them, “Who is it you want?” “Jesus of Nazareth,” they said.
8 Jesus answered, “I told you that I am He; so if you seek Me, let these go their way,” Jesus answered, “I told you that I am he. So, if you seek me, let these men go.” Jesus answered, “I told you that I am he. If you are looking for me, then let these men go.”
9 in order that the word which He spoke would be fulfilled, “Of those whom You have given Me, I lost not one.” This was to fulfill the word that he had spoken: “Of those whom you gave me I have lost not one.” This happened so that the words he had spoken would be fulfilled: “I have not lost one of those you gave me.”
10 Simon Peter then, having a sword, drew it and struck the high priest’s slave, and cut off his right ear; and the slave’s name was Malchus. Then Simon Peter, having a sword, drew it and struck the high priest’s servant and cut off his right ear. (The servant’s name was Malchus.) Then Simon Peter, who had a sword, drew it and struck the high priest’s servant, cutting off his right ear. (The servant’s name was Malchus.)
11 So Jesus said to Peter, “Put the sword into the sheath; the cup which the Father has given Me, shall I not drink it?” So Jesus said to Peter, “Put your sword into its sheath; shall I not drink the cup that the Father has given me?” Jesus commanded Peter, “Put your sword away! Shall I not drink the cup the Father has given me?”
12 So the Roman cohort and the commander and the officers of the Jews, arrested Jesus and bound Him, So the band of soldiers and their captain and the officers of the Jews arrested Jesus and bound him. Then the detachment of soldiers with its commander and the Jewish officials arrested Jesus. They bound him
13 and led Him to Annas first; for he was father-in-law of Caiaphas, who was high priest that year. First they led him to Annas, for he was the father-in-law of Caiaphas, who was high priest that year. and brought him first to Annas, who was the father-in-law of Caiaphas, the high priest that year.
14 Now Caiaphas was the one who had advised the Jews that it was better for one man to die on behalf of the people. It was Caiaphas who had advised the Jews that it would be expedient that one man should die for the people. Caiaphas was the one who had advised the Jewish leaders that it would be good if one man died for the people.
15 And Simon Peter was following Jesus, and so was another disciple. Now that disciple was known to the high priest, and entered with Jesus into the court of the high priest, Simon Peter followed Jesus, and so did another disciple. Since that disciple was known to the high priest, he entered with Jesus into the courtyard of the high priest, Simon Peter and another disciple were following Jesus. Because this disciple was known to the high priest, he went with Jesus into the high priest’s courtyard,
16 but Peter was standing at the door outside. So the other disciple, who was known to the high priest, went out and spoke to the doorkeeper, and brought Peter in. but Peter stood outside at the door. So the other disciple, who was known to the high priest, went out and spoke to the servant girl who kept watch at the door, and brought Peter in. but Peter had to wait outside at the door. The other disciple, who was known to the high priest, came back, spoke to the servant girl on duty there and brought Peter in.
17 Then the servant-girl who kept the door said to Peter, “Are you not also one of this man’s disciples?” He said, “I am not.” The servant girl at the door said to Peter, “You also are not one of this man’s disciples, are you?” He said, “I am not.” “You aren’t one of this man’s disciples too, are you?” she asked Peter. He replied, “I am not.”
18 Now the slaves and the officers were standing there, having made a charcoal fire, for it was cold and they were warming themselves; and Peter was also with them, standing and warming himself. Now the servants and officers had made a charcoal fire, because it was cold, and they were standing and warming themselves. Peter also was with them, standing and warming himself. It was cold, and the servants and officials stood around a fire they had made to keep warm. Peter also was standing with them, warming himself.
19 The high priest then questioned Jesus about His disciples, and about His teaching. The high priest then questioned Jesus about his disciples and his teaching. Meanwhile, the high priest questioned Jesus about his disciples and his teaching.
20 Jesus answered him, “I have spoken openly to the world; I always taught in synagogues and in the temple, where all the Jews come together; and I spoke nothing in secret. 22 And when He had said this, one of the officers standing nearby gave Jesus a slap, saying, “Is that the way You answer the high priest?” When he had said these things, one of the officers standing by struck Jesus with his hand, saying, “Is that how you answer the high priest?” When Jesus said this, one of the officials nearby slapped him in the face. “Is this the way you answer the high priest?” he demanded.
23 Jesus answered him, “If I have spoken wrongly, bear witness of the wrong; but if rightly, why do you strike Me?” Jesus answered him, “If what I said is wrong, bear witness about the wrong; but if what I said is right, why do you strike me?” “If I said something wrong,” Jesus replied, “testify as to what is wrong. But if I spoke the truth, why did you strike me?”
24 So Annas sent Him bound to Caiaphas the high priest. Annas then sent him bound to Caiaphas the high priest. Then Annas sent him bound to Caiaphas the high priest.
25 Now Simon Peter was standing and warming himself. So they said to him, “You are not also one of His disciples, are you?” He denied it, and said, “I am not.” Now Simon Peter was standing and warming himself. So they said to him, “You also are not one of his disciples, are you?” He denied it and said, “I am not.” Meanwhile, Simon Peter was still standing there warming himself. So they asked him, “You aren’t one of his disciples too, are you?” He denied it, saying, “I am not.”
26 One of the slaves of the high priest, being a relative of the one whose ear Peter cut off, said, “Did I not see you in the garden with Him?” One of the servants of the high priest, a relative of the man whose ear Peter had cut off, asked, “Did I not see you in the garden with him?” One of the high priest’s servants, a relative of the man whose ear Peter had cut off, challenged him, “Didn’t I see you with him in the garden?”
27 Peter then denied it again, and immediately a rooster crowed. Peter again denied it, and at once a rooster crowed. Again Peter denied it, and at that moment a rooster began to crow.
28 Then they led Jesus from Caiaphas into the Praetorium, and it was early; and they themselves did not enter into the Praetorium so that they would not be defiled, but might eat the Passover. Then they led Jesus from the house of Caiaphas to the governor’s headquarters. It was early morning. They themselves did not enter the governor’s headquarters, so that they would not be defiled, but could eat the Passover. Then the Jewish leaders took Jesus from Caiaphas to the palace of the Roman governor. By now it was early morning, and to avoid ceremonial uncleanness they did not enter the palace, because they wanted to be able to eat the Passover.
29 Therefore Pilate went out to them and said, “What accusation do you bring against this man?” So Pilate went outside to them and said, “What accusation do you bring against this man?” So Pilate came out to them and asked, “What charges are you bringing against this man?”
30 They answered and said to him, “If this man were not an evildoer, we would not have delivered Him to you.” They answered him, “If this man were not doing evil, we would not have delivered him over to you.” “If he were not a criminal,” they replied, “we would not have handed him over to you.”
31 So Pilate said to them, “Take Him yourselves, and judge Him according to your law.” The Jews said to him, “It is not lawful for us to put anyone to death,” Pilate said to them, “Take him yourselves and judge him by your own law.” The Jews said to him, “It is not lawful for us to put anyone to death.” Pilate said, “Take him yourselves and judge him by your own law.” “But we have no right to execute anyone,” they objected.
32 in order that the word of Jesus which He spoke would be fulfilled, signifying by what kind of death He was about to die. This was to fulfill the word that Jesus had spoken to show by what kind of death he was going to die. This took place to fulfill what Jesus had said about the kind of death he was going to die.
33 Therefore Pilate entered again into the Praetorium, and summoned Jesus and said to Him, “Are You the King of the Jews?” So Pilate entered his headquarters again and called Jesus and said to him, “Are you the King of the Jews?” Pilate then went back inside the palace, summoned Jesus and asked him, “Are you the king of the Jews?”
34 Jesus answered, “Are you saying this from yourself, or did others tell you about Me?” Jesus answered, “Do you say this of your own accord, or did others say it to you about me?” “Is that your own idea,” Jesus asked, “or did others talk to you about me?”
35 Pilate answered, “Am I a Jew? Your own nation and the chief priests delivered You to me; what did You do?” Pilate answered, “Am I a Jew? Your own nation and the chief priests have delivered you over to me. What have you done?” “Am I a Jew?” Pilate replied. “Your own people and chief priests handed you over to me. What is it you have done?”
36 Jesus answered, “My kingdom is not of this world. If My kingdom were of this world, then My servants would be fighting so that I would not be delivered over to the Jews; but as it is, My kingdom is not from here.” Jesus answered, “My kingdom is not of this world. If my kingdom were of this world, my servants would have been fighting, that I might not be delivered over to the Jews. But my kingdom is not from the world.” Jesus said, “My kingdom is not of this world. If it were, my servants would fight to prevent my arrest by the Jewish leaders. But now my kingdom is from another place.”
37 Therefore Pilate said to Him, “So You are a king?” Jesus answered, “You yourself said I am a king. For this I have been born, and for this I have come into the world, to bear witness to the truth. Everyone who is of the truth hears My voice.” Then Pilate said to him, “So you are a king?” Jesus answered, “You say that I am a king. For this purpose I was born and for this purpose I have come into the world—to bear witness to the truth. Everyone who is of the truth listens to my voice.” “You are a king, then!” said Pilate. Jesus answered, “You say that I am a king. In fact, the reason I was born and came into the world is to testify to the truth. Everyone on the side of truth listens to me.”
38 Pilate said to Him, “What is truth?” And when he had said this, he went out again to the Jews and said to them, “I find no guilt in Him. Pilate said to him, “What is truth?” After he had said this, he went back outside to the Jews and told them, “I find no guilt in him. “What is truth?” retorted Pilate. With this he went out again to the Jews gathered there and said, “I find no basis for a charge against him.
39 But you have a custom that I release someone for you at the Passover; do you wish then that I release for you the King of the Jews?” But you have a custom that I should release one man for you at the Passover. So do you want me to release to you the King of the Jews?” But it is your custom for me to release to you one prisoner at the time of the Passover. Do you want me to release ‘the king of the Jews’?”
40 So they cried out again, saying, “Not this man, but Barabbas.” Now Barabbas was a robber. They cried out again, “Not this man, but Barabbas!” Now Barabbas was a robber. They shouted back, “No, not him! Give us Barabbas!” Now Barabbas had taken part in an uprising.
