1	After Jesus had said these things, he went out with his disciples across the Kidron Valley, where there was a garden, and he and his disciples went into it.	When Jesus had spoken these words, he went out with his disciples across the brook Kidron, where there was a garden, which he and his disciples entered.	When he had finished praying, Jesus left with his disciples and crossed the Kidron Valley. On the other side there was a garden, and he and his disciples went into it.

3	So Judas took a company of soldiers and some officials from the chief priests and the Pharisees and came there with lanterns, torches, and weapons. 8	“I told you I am he,” Jesus replied. “So if you’re looking for me, let these men go.”	Jesus answered, “I told you that I am he. So, if you seek me, let these men go.”	Jesus answered, “I told you that I am he. If you are looking for me, then let these men go.”
9	This was to fulfill the words he had said: “I have not lost one of those you have given me.”	This was to fulfill the word that he had spoken: “Of those whom you gave me I have lost not one.”	This happened so that the words he had spoken would be fulfilled: “I have not lost one of those you gave me.”
10	Then Simon Peter, who had a sword, drew it, struck the high priest’s servant, and cut off his right ear. (The servant’s name was Malchus.) 11	At that, Jesus said to Peter, “Put your sword away! 12	Then the company of soldiers, the commander, and the Jewish officials arrested Jesus and tied him up. 13	First they led him to Annas, since he was the father-in-law of Caiaphas, who was high priest that year. 14	Caiaphas was the one who had advised the Jews that it would be better for one man to die for the people. 16	But Peter remained standing outside by the door. So the other disciple, the one known to the high priest, went out and spoke to the girl who was the doorkeeper and brought Peter in.	but Peter stood outside at the door. So the other disciple, who was known to the high priest, went out and spoke to the servant girl who kept watch at the door, and brought Peter in.	but Peter had to wait outside at the door. 17	Then the servant girl who was the doorkeeper said to Peter, “You aren’t one of this man’s disciples too, are you? ” “I am not,” he said.	The servant girl at the door said to Peter, “You also are not one of this man’s disciples, are you?” He said, “I am not.”	“You aren’t one of this man’s disciples too, are you?” she asked Peter. He replied, “I am not.”
18	Now the servants and the officials had made a charcoal fire, because it was cold. They were standing there warming themselves, and Peter was standing with them, warming himself.	Now the servants and officers had made a charcoal fire, because it was cold, and they were standing and warming themselves. Peter also was with them, standing and warming himself. 20	“I have spoken openly to the world,” Jesus answered him. “I have always taught in the synagogue and in the temple, where all the Jews gather, and I haven’t spoken anything in secret. 22	When he had said these things, one of the officials standing by slapped Jesus, saying, “Is this the way you answer the high priest? ”	When he had said these things, one of the officers standing by struck Jesus with his hand, saying, “Is that how you answer the high priest?”	When Jesus said this, one of the officials nearby slapped him in the face. “Is this the way you answer the high priest?” he demanded.
23	“If I have spoken wrongly,” Jesus answered him, “give evidence about the wrong; but if rightly, why do you hit me? ”	Jesus answered him, “If what I said is wrong, bear witness about the wrong; but if what I said is right, why do you strike me?”	“If I said something wrong,” Jesus replied, “testify as to what is wrong. But if I spoke the truth, why did you strike me?”
24	Then Annas sent him bound to Caiaphas the high priest.	Annas then sent him bound to Caiaphas the high priest.	Then Annas sent him bound to Caiaphas the high priest.
25	Now Simon Peter was standing and warming himself. They said to him, “You aren’t one of his disciples too, are you? ” He denied it and said, “I am not.”	Now Simon Peter was standing and warming himself. 28	Then they led Jesus from Caiaphas to the governor’s headquarters. It was early morning. They did not enter the headquarters themselves; otherwise they would be defiled and unable to eat the Passover.	Then they led Jesus from the house of Caiaphas to the governor’s headquarters. By now it was early morning, and to avoid ceremonial uncleanness they did not enter the palace, because they wanted to be able to eat the Passover.
29	So Pilate came out to them and said, “What charge do you bring against this man? ”	So Pilate went outside to them and said, “What accusation do you bring against this man?”	So Pilate came out to them and asked, “What charges are you bringing against this man?”
30	They answered him, “If this man weren’t a criminal, we wouldn’t have handed him over to you.”	They answered him, “If this man were not doing evil, we would not have delivered him over to you.”	“If he were not a criminal,” they replied, “we would not have handed him over to you.”
31	Pilate told them, “You take him and judge him according to your law.” “It’s not legal for us to put anyone to death,” the Jews declared.	Pilate said to them, “Take him yourselves and judge him by your own law.” The Jews said to him, “It is not lawful for us to put anyone to death.”	Pilate said, “Take him yourselves and judge him by your own law.” “But we have no right to execute anyone,” they objected.
32	They said this so that Jesus’s words might be fulfilled indicating what kind of death he was going to die.	This was to fulfill the word that Jesus had spoken to show by what kind of death he was going to die.	This took place to fulfill what Jesus had said about the kind of death he was going to die.
33	Then Pilate went back into the headquarters, summoned Jesus, and said to him, “Are you the king of the Jews? ”	So Pilate entered his headquarters again and called Jesus and said to him, “Are you the King of the Jews?”	Pilate then went back inside the palace, summoned Jesus and asked him, “Are you the king of the Jews?”
34	Jesus answered, “Are you asking this on your own, or have others told you about me? ”	Jesus answered, “Do you say this of your own accord, or did others say it to you about me?”	“Is that your own idea,” Jesus asked, “or did others talk to you about me?”
35	“I’m not a Jew, am I? ” Pilate replied. “Your own nation and the chief priests handed you over to me. What have you done? ”	Pilate answered, “Am I a Jew? Your own nation and the chief priests have delivered you over to me. What have you done?”	“Am I a Jew?” Pilate replied. “Your own people and chief priests handed you over to me. What is it you have done?”
36	“My kingdom is not of this world,” said Jesus. “If my kingdom were of this world, my servants would fight, so that I wouldn’t be handed over to the Jews. But as it is, my kingdom is not from here.”	Jesus answered, “My kingdom is not of this world. If my kingdom were of this world, my servants would have been fighting, that I might not be delivered over to the Jews. But my kingdom is not from the world.”	Jesus said, “My kingdom is not of this world. If it were, my servants would fight to prevent my arrest by the Jewish leaders. But now my kingdom is from another place.”
37	“You are a king then? ” Pilate asked. “You say that I’m a king,” Jesus replied. “I was born for this, and I have come into the world for this: to testify to the truth. Everyone who is of the truth listens to my voice.”	Then Pilate said to him, “So you are a king?” Jesus answered, “You say that I am a king. For this purpose I was born and for this purpose I have come into the world—to bear witness to the truth. Everyone who is of the truth listens to my voice.”	“You are a king, then!” said Pilate. Jesus answered, “You say that I am a king. In fact, the reason I was born and came into the world is to testify to the truth. Everyone on the side of truth listens to me.”
38	“What is truth? ” said Pilate. After he had said this, he went out to the Jews again and told them, “I find no grounds for charging him.	Pilate said to him, “What is truth?” After he had said this, he went back outside to the Jews and told them, “I find no guilt in him.	“What is truth?” retorted Pilate. With this he went out again to the Jews gathered there and said, “I find no basis for a charge against him.
39	You have a custom that I release one prisoner to you at the Passover. So, do you want me to release to you the king of the Jews? ”	But you have a custom that I should release one man for you at the Passover. So do you want me to release to you the King of the Jews?”	But it is your custom for me to release to you one prisoner at the time of the Passover. Do you want me to release ‘the king of the Jews’?”
40	They shouted back, “Not this man, but Barabbas! ” Now Barabbas was a revolutionary.	They cried out again, “Not this man, but Barabbas!” Now Barabbas was a robber.	They shouted back, “No, not him! Give us Barabbas!” Now Barabbas had taken part in an uprising.
