1	After Jesus had spoken these words, He went out with His disciples across the Kidron Valley, where they entered a garden. 3	So Judas brought a band of soldiers and officers from the chief priests and Pharisees. They arrived at the garden carrying lanterns, torches, and weapons. 5	“Jesus of Nazareth,” they answered. Jesus said, “I am He.” And Judas His betrayer was standing there with them.	They answered him, “Jesus of Nazareth.” Jesus said to them, “I am he.” Judas, who betrayed him, was standing with them.	“Jesus of Nazareth,” they replied. “I am he,” Jesus said. 9	This was to fulfill the word He had spoken: “I have not lost one of those You have given Me.”	This was to fulfill the word that he had spoken: “Of those whom you gave me I have lost not one.”	This happened so that the words he had spoken would be fulfilled: “I have not lost one of those you gave me.”
10	Then Simon Peter drew his sword and struck the servant of the high priest, cutting off his right ear. The servant’s name was Malchus.	Then Simon Peter, having a sword, drew it and struck the high priest’s servant and cut off his right ear. (The servant’s name was Malchus.) 11	“Put your sword back in its sheath!” Jesus said to Peter. “Shall I not drink the cup the Father has given Me?”	So Jesus said to Peter, “Put your sword into its sheath; shall I not drink the cup that the Father has given me?”	Jesus commanded Peter, “Put your sword away! Shall I not drink the cup the Father has given me?”
12	Then the band of soldiers, with its commander and the officers of the Jews, arrested Jesus and bound Him. 13	They brought Him first to Annas, who was the father-in-law of Caiaphas, the high priest that year. He replied, “I am not.”
18	Because it was cold, the servants and officers were standing around a charcoal fire they had made to keep warm. And Peter was also standing with them, warming himself.	Now the servants and officers had made a charcoal fire, because it was cold, and they were standing and warming themselves. Peter also was with them, standing and warming himself. 20	“I have spoken openly to the world,” Jesus answered. “I always taught in the synagogues and at the temple, where all the Jews come together. I said nothing in secret. 22	When Jesus had said this, one of the officers standing nearby slapped Him in the face and said, “Is this how You answer the high priest?”	When he had said these things, one of the officers standing by struck Jesus with his hand, saying, “Is that how you answer the high priest?”	When Jesus said this, one of the officials nearby slapped him in the face. “Is this the way you answer the high priest?” he demanded.
23	Jesus replied, “If I said something wrong, testify as to what was wrong. But if I spoke correctly, why did you strike Me?”	Jesus answered him, “If what I said is wrong, bear witness about the wrong; but if what I said is right, why do you strike me?”	“If I said something wrong,” Jesus replied, “testify as to what is wrong. But if I spoke the truth, why did you strike me?”
24	Then Annas sent Him, still bound, to Caiaphas the high priest.	Annas then sent him bound to Caiaphas the high priest.	Then Annas sent him bound to Caiaphas the high priest.
25	Simon Peter was still standing and warming himself. So they asked him, “Aren’t you also one of His disciples?” He denied it and said, “I am not.”	Now Simon Peter was standing and warming himself. 28	Then they led Jesus away from Caiaphas into the Praetorium. By now it was early morning, and the Jews did not enter the Praetorium, to avoid being defiled and unable to eat the Passover.	Then they led Jesus from the house of Caiaphas to the governor’s headquarters. It was early morning. They themselves did not enter the governor’s headquarters, so that they would not be defiled, but could eat the Passover.	Then the Jewish leaders took Jesus from Caiaphas to the palace of the Roman governor. By now it was early morning, and to avoid ceremonial uncleanness they did not enter the palace, because they wanted to be able to eat the Passover.
29	So Pilate went out to them and asked, “What accusation are you bringing against this man?”	So Pilate went outside to them and said, “What accusation do you bring against this man?”	So Pilate came out to them and asked, “What charges are you bringing against this man?”
30	“If He were not a criminal,” they replied, “we would not have handed Him over to you.”	They answered him, “If this man were not doing evil, we would not have delivered him over to you.”	“If he were not a criminal,” they replied, “we would not have handed him over to you.”
31	“You take Him and judge Him by your own law,” Pilate told them. “We are not permitted to execute anyone,” the Jews replied.	Pilate said to them, “Take him yourselves and judge him by your own law.” The Jews said to him, “It is not lawful for us to put anyone to death.”	Pilate said, “Take him yourselves and judge him by your own law.” “But we have no right to execute anyone,” they objected.
32	This was to fulfill the word that Jesus had spoken to indicate the kind of death He was going to die.	This was to fulfill the word that Jesus had spoken to show by what kind of death he was going to die.	This took place to fulfill what Jesus had said about the kind of death he was going to die.
33	Pilate went back into the Praetorium, summoned Jesus, and asked Him, “Are You the King of the Jews?”	So Pilate entered his headquarters again and called Jesus and said to him, “Are you the King of the Jews?”	Pilate then went back inside the palace, summoned Jesus and asked him, “Are you the king of the Jews?”
34	“Are you saying this on your own,” Jesus asked, “or did others tell you about Me?”	Jesus answered, “Do you say this of your own accord, or did others say it to you about me?”	“Is that your own idea,” Jesus asked, “or did others talk to you about me?”
35	“Am I a Jew?” Pilate replied. “Your own people and chief priests handed You over to me. What have You done?”	Pilate answered, “Am I a Jew? Your own nation and the chief priests have delivered you over to me. What have you done?”	“Am I a Jew?” Pilate replied. “Your own people and chief priests handed you over to me. What is it you have done?”
36	Jesus answered, “My kingdom is not of this world; if it were, My servants would fight to prevent My arrest by the Jews. But now My kingdom is not of this realm.”	Jesus answered, “My kingdom is not of this world. If my kingdom were of this world, my servants would have been fighting, that I might not be delivered over to the Jews. But my kingdom is not from the world.”	Jesus said, “My kingdom is not of this world. If it were, my servants would fight to prevent my arrest by the Jewish leaders. But now my kingdom is from another place.”
37	“Then You are a king!” Pilate said. “You say that I am a king,” Jesus answered. “For this reason I was born and have come into the world, to testify to the truth. Everyone who belongs to the truth listens to My voice.”	Then Pilate said to him, “So you are a king?” Jesus answered, “You say that I am a king. For this purpose I was born and for this purpose I have come into the world—to bear witness to the truth. Everyone who is of the truth listens to my voice.”	“You are a king, then!” said Pilate. Jesus answered, “You say that I am a king. In fact, the reason I was born and came into the world is to testify to the truth. Everyone on the side of truth listens to me.”
38	“What is truth?” Pilate asked. And having said this, he went out again to the Jews and told them, “I find no basis for a charge against Him.	Pilate said to him, “What is truth?” After he had said this, he went back outside to the Jews and told them, “I find no guilt in him.	“What is truth?” retorted Pilate. With this he went out again to the Jews gathered there and said, “I find no basis for a charge against him.
39	But it is your custom that I release to you one prisoner at the Passover. So then, do you want me to release to you the King of the Jews?”	But you have a custom that I should release one man for you at the Passover. So do you want me to release to you the King of the Jews?”	But it is your custom for me to release to you one prisoner at the time of the Passover. Do you want me to release ‘the king of the Jews’?”
40	“Not this man,” they shouted, “but Barabbas!” (Now Barabbas was an insurrectionist.)	They cried out again, “Not this man, but Barabbas!” Now Barabbas was a robber.	They shouted back, “No, not him! Give us Barabbas!” Now Barabbas had taken part in an uprising.
