1 “Can you draw out Leviathan with a fishhook? Or press down its tongue with a cord? “Can you draw out Leviathan with a fishhook or press down his tongue with a cord? “Can you pull in Leviathan with a fishhook or tie down its tongue with a rope?
2 Can you put a rope in its nose Or pierce its jaw with a hook? Can you put a rope in his nose or pierce his jaw with a hook? Can you put a cord through its nose or pierce its jaw with a hook?
3 Will it make many supplications to you, Or will he speak to you soft words? Will he make many pleas to you? Will he speak to you soft words? Will it keep begging you for mercy? Will it speak to you with gentle words?
4 Will it cut a covenant with you? Will you take it for a slave forever? Will he make a covenant with you to take him for your servant forever? Will it make an agreement with you for you to take it as your slave for life?
5 Will you play with it as with a bird, Or will you bind it for your young women? Will you play with him as with a bird, or will you put him on a leash for your girls? Can you make a pet of it like a bird or put it on a leash for the young women in your house?
6 Will the traders bargain over it? Will they divide it among the merchants? Will traders bargain over him? Will they divide him up among the merchants? Will traders barter for it? Will they divide it up among the merchants?

10 No one is so fierce that he dares to arouse it; Who then is he that can stand before Me? No one is so fierce that he dares to stir him up. Who then is he who can stand before me? No one is fierce enough to rouse it. Who then is able to stand against me?
11 Who has given to Me that I should repay him? Whatever is under the whole heaven is Mine. Who has first given to me, that I should repay him? Whatever is under the whole heaven is mine. Who has a claim against me that I must pay? Everything under heaven belongs to me.
12 “I will not keep silence concerning its limbs, Or its mighty strength or its graceful frame. “I will not keep silence concerning his limbs, or his mighty strength, or his goodly frame. “I will not fail to speak of Leviathan’s limbs, its strength and its graceful form.
13 Who can strip off its outer armor? Who can come with its doubled bridle? Who can strip off his outer garment? Who would come near him with a bridle? Who can strip off its outer coat? Who can penetrate its double coat of armor?
14 Who can open the doors of its face? Around its teeth there is dreadful terror. Who can open the doors of his face? Around his teeth is terror. Who dares open the doors of its mouth, ringed about with fearsome teeth?
15 Its strong scales are its pride, Shut up as with a tight seal. His back is made of rows of shields, shut up closely as with a seal. Its back has rows of shields tightly sealed together;
16 One is so near to another That no air can come between them. One is so near to another that no air can come between them. each is so close to the next that no air can pass between.
17 They cling one to another; They are interlocked and cannot be separated. They are joined one to another; they clasp each other and cannot be separated. They are joined fast to one another; they cling together and cannot be parted.
18 Its sneezes flash forth light, And its eyes are like the eyelids of the morning. His sneezings flash forth light, and his eyes are like the eyelids of the dawn. Its snorting throws out flashes of light; its eyes are like the rays of dawn.
19 Out of its mouth go burning torches; Sparks of fire leap forth. Out of his mouth go flaming torches; sparks of fire leap forth. Flames stream from its mouth; sparks of fire shoot out.
20 Out of its nostrils smoke goes forth As from a boiling pot and burning reeds. Out of his nostrils comes forth smoke, as from a boiling pot and burning rushes. Smoke pours from its nostrils as from a boiling pot over burning reeds.
21 Its breath kindles coals, And a flame goes forth from its mouth. His breath kindles coals, and a flame comes forth from his mouth. Its breath sets coals ablaze, and flames dart from its mouth.
22 In its neck lodges strength, And dismay leaps before it. In his neck abides strength, and terror dances before him. Strength resides in its neck; dismay goes before it.
23 The folds of its flesh cling together, Hardened upon it and is not shaken. The folds of his flesh stick together, firmly cast on him and immovable. The folds of its flesh are tightly joined; they are firm and immovable.
24 Its heart is as hard as a stone, Even as hard as a lower millstone. His heart is hard as a stone, hard as the lower millstone. Its chest is hard as rock, hard as a lower millstone.
25 When it raises itself up, the mighty fear, Because of the crashing they are bewildered. When he raises himself up, the mighty are afraid; at the crashing they are beside themselves. When it rises up, the mighty are terrified; they retreat before its thrashing.
26 The sword that reaches it cannot avail, Nor the spear, the dart, or the javelin. Though the sword reaches him, it does not avail, nor the spear, the dart, or the javelin. The sword that reaches it has no effect, nor does the spear or the dart or the javelin.
27 It regards iron as straw, Bronze as rotten wood. He counts iron as straw, and bronze as rotten wood. Iron it treats like straw and bronze like rotten wood.
28 The arrow cannot make it flee; Slingstones are turned into stubble for it. The arrow cannot make him flee; for him, sling stones are turned to stubble. Arrows do not make it flee; slingstones are like chaff to it.
29 Clubs are regarded as stubble; It laughs at the rattling of the javelin. Clubs are counted as stubble; he laughs at the rattle of javelins. A club seems to it but a piece of straw; it laughs at the rattling of the lance.
30 Its underparts are like sharp potsherds; It spreads out like a threshing sledge on the mire. His underparts are like sharp potsherds; he spreads himself like a threshing sledge on the mire. Its undersides are jagged potsherds, leaving a trail in the mud like a threshing sledge.
31 It makes the depths boil like a pot; It makes the sea like a jar of ointment. He makes the deep boil like a pot; he makes the sea like a pot of ointment. It makes the depths churn like a boiling caldron and stirs up the sea like a pot of ointment.
32 Behind it, it makes a wake to shine; One would think the deep to be gray-haired. Behind him he leaves a shining wake; one would think the deep to be white-haired. It leaves a glistening wake behind it; one would think the deep had white hair.
33 There is nothing upon the dust like it, One made without terror. On earth there is not his like, a creature without fear. Nothing on earth is its equal— a creature without fear.
34 It looks on everything that is high; It is king over all the sons of pride.” He sees everything that is high; he is king over all the sons of pride.” It looks down on all that are haughty; it is king over all that are proud.”
