1 Canst thou draw out the leviathan with a hook, or canst thou tie his tongue with a cord? “Can you draw out Leviathan with a fishhook or press down his tongue with a cord? “Can you pull in Leviathan with a fishhook or tie down its tongue with a rope?
2 Canst thou put a ring in his nose, or bore through his jaw with a buckle? Can you put a rope in his nose or pierce his jaw with a hook? Can you put a cord through its nose or pierce its jaw with a hook?
3 Will he make many supplications to thee, or speak soft words to thee? Will he make many pleas to you? Will he speak to you soft words? Will it keep begging you for mercy? Will it speak to you with gentle words?
4 Will he make a covenant with thee, and wilt thou take him to be a servant for ever? Will he make a covenant with you to take him for your servant forever? Will it make an agreement with you for you to take it as your slave for life?
5 Shalt thou play with him as with a bird, or tie him up for thy handmaids? Will you play with him as with a bird, or will you put him on a leash for your girls? Can you make a pet of it like a bird or put it on a leash for the young women in your house?
6 Shall friends cut him in pieces, shall merchants divide him? Will traders bargain over him? Will they divide him up among the merchants? Will traders barter for it? Will they divide it up among the merchants?
7 Wilt thou fill nets with his skin, and the cabins of fishes with his head? Can you fill his skin with harpoons or his head with fishing spears? Can you fill its hide with harpoons or its head with fishing spears?
8 Lay thy hand upon him : remember the battle, and speak no more. Lay your hands on him; remember the battle—you will not do it again! If you lay a hand on it, you will remember the struggle and never do it again!
9 Behold his hope shall fail him, and in the sight of all he shall be cast down. Behold, the hope of a man is false; he is laid low even at the sight of him. Any hope of subduing it is false; the mere sight of it is overpowering.
10 I will not stir him up, like one that is cruel : for who can resist my countenance? No one is so fierce that he dares to stir him up. Who then is he who can stand before me? No one is fierce enough to rouse it. Who then is able to stand against me?
11 Who hath given me before that I should repay him? All things that are under heaven are mine. Who has first given to me, that I should repay him? Whatever is under the whole heaven is mine. Who has a claim against me that I must pay? Everything under heaven belongs to me.
12 I will not spare him, nor his mighty words, and framed to make supplication. “I will not keep silence concerning his limbs, or his mighty strength, or his goodly frame. “I will not fail to speak of Leviathan’s limbs, its strength and its graceful form.
13 Who can discover the face of his garment? or who can go into the midst of his mouth? Who can strip off his outer garment? Who would come near him with a bridle? Who can strip off its outer coat? Who can penetrate its double coat of armor?
14 Who can open the doors of his face? his teeth are terrible round about. Who can open the doors of his face? Around his teeth is terror. Who dares open the doors of its mouth, ringed about with fearsome teeth?
15 His body is like molten shields, shut close up with scales pressing upon one another. His back is made of rows of shields, shut up closely as with a seal. Its back has rows of shields tightly sealed together;
16 One is joined to another, and not so much as any air can come between them : One is so near to another that no air can come between them. each is so close to the next that no air can pass between.
17 They stick one to another and they hold one another fast, and shall not be separated. They are joined one to another; they clasp each other and cannot be separated. They are joined fast to one another; they cling together and cannot be parted.
18 His sneezing is like the shining of fire, and his eyes like the eyelids of the morning. His sneezings flash forth light, and his eyes are like the eyelids of the dawn. Its snorting throws out flashes of light; its eyes are like the rays of dawn.
19 Out of his mouth go forth lamps, like torches of lighted fire. Out of his mouth go flaming torches; sparks of fire leap forth. Flames stream from its mouth; sparks of fire shoot out.
20 Out of his nostrils goeth smoke, like that of a pot heated and boiling. Out of his nostrils comes forth smoke, as from a boiling pot and burning rushes. Smoke pours from its nostrils as from a boiling pot over burning reeds.
21 His breath kindleth coals, and a flame cometh forth out of his mouth. His breath kindles coals, and a flame comes forth from his mouth. Its breath sets coals ablaze, and flames dart from its mouth.
22 In his neck strength shall dwell, and want goeth before his face. In his neck abides strength, and terror dances before him. Strength resides in its neck; dismay goes before it.
23 The members of his flesh cleave one to another : he shall send lightnings against him, and they shall not be carried to another place. The folds of his flesh stick together, firmly cast on him and immovable. The folds of its flesh are tightly joined; they are firm and immovable.
24 His heart shall be as hard as a stone, and as firm as a smith's anvil. His heart is hard as a stone, hard as the lower millstone. Its chest is hard as rock, hard as a lower millstone.
25 When he shall raise him up, the angels shall fear, and being affrighted shall purify themselves. When he raises himself up, the mighty are afraid; at the crashing they are beside themselves. When it rises up, the mighty are terrified; they retreat before its thrashing.
26 When a sword shall lay at him, it shall not be able to hold, nor a spear, nor a breastplate. Though the sword reaches him, it does not avail, nor the spear, the dart, or the javelin. The sword that reaches it has no effect, nor does the spear or the dart or the javelin.
27 For he shall esteem iron as straw, and brass as rotten wood. He counts iron as straw, and bronze as rotten wood. Iron it treats like straw and bronze like rotten wood.
28 The archer shall not put him to flight, the stones of the sling are to him like stubble. The arrow cannot make him flee; for him, sling stones are turned to stubble. Arrows do not make it flee; slingstones are like chaff to it.
29 As stubble will he esteem the hammer, and he will laugh him to scorn who shaketh the spear. Clubs are counted as stubble; he laughs at the rattle of javelins. A club seems to it but a piece of straw; it laughs at the rattling of the lance.
30 The beams of the sun shall be under him, and he shall strew gold under him like mire. His underparts are like sharp potsherds; he spreads himself like a threshing sledge on the mire. Its undersides are jagged potsherds, leaving a trail in the mud like a threshing sledge.
31 He shall make the deep sea to boil like a pot, and shall make it as when ointments boil. He makes the deep boil like a pot; he makes the sea like a pot of ointment. It makes the depths churn like a boiling caldron and stirs up the sea like a pot of ointment.
32 A path shall shine after him, he shall esteem the deep as growing old. Behind him he leaves a shining wake; one would think the deep to be white-haired. It leaves a glistening wake behind it; one would think the deep had white hair.
33 There is no power upon earth that can be compared with him who was made to fear no one. On earth there is not his like, a creature without fear. Nothing on earth is its equal— a creature without fear.
34 He beholdeth every high thing, he is king over all the children of pride. He sees everything that is high; he is king over all the sons of pride.” It looks down on all that are haughty; it is king over all that are proud.”
