1 “Do you know the time the mountain goats give birth? Do you keep watch over the calving of the deer? “Do you know when the mountain goats give birth? Do you observe the calving of the does? “Do you know when the mountain goats give birth? Do you watch when the doe bears her fawn?
2 Can you count the months they fulfill, Or do you know the time they give birth? Can you number the months that they fulfill, and do you know the time when they give birth, Do you count the months till they bear? Do you know the time they give birth?
3 They kneel down; they bring forth their young; They send out their labor pains. when they crouch, bring forth their offspring, and are delivered of their young? They crouch down and bring forth their young; their labor pains are ended.
4 Their children become strong; they grow up in the open field; They leave and do not return to them. Their young ones become strong; they grow up in the open; they go out and do not return to them. Their young thrive and grow strong in the wilds; they leave and do not return.
5 “Who sent out the wild donkey free? And who loosed the bonds of the swift donkey, “Who has let the wild donkey go free? Who has loosed the bonds of the swift donkey, “Who let the wild donkey go free? Who untied its ropes?
6 For whom I have set the desert plain as a home And the salt land as his dwelling place? to whom I have given the arid plain for his home and the salt land for his dwelling place? I gave it the wasteland as its home, the salt flats as its habitat.
7 He laughs at the tumult of the city; The shoutings of the driver he does not hear. He scorns the tumult of the city; he hears not the shouts of the driver. It laughs at the commotion in the town; it does not hear a driver’s shout.
8 He explores the mountains for his pasture And searches after every green thing. He ranges the mountains as his pasture, and he searches after every green thing. It ranges the hills for its pasture and searches for any green thing.
9 Will the wild ox consent to serve you, Or will he spend the night at your manger? “Is the wild ox willing to serve you? Will he spend the night at your manger? “Will the wild ox consent to serve you? Will it stay by your manger at night?
10 Can you bind the wild ox in a furrow with ropes, Or will he harrow the valleys after you? Can you bind him in the furrow with ropes, or will he harrow the valleys after you? Can you hold it to the furrow with a harness? Will it till the valleys behind you?
11 Will you trust him because his power is great And leave your labor to him? Will you depend on him because his strength is great, and will you leave to him your labor? Will you rely on it for its great strength? Will you leave your heavy work to it?
12 Will you believe him that he will return your seed of grain And gather it from your threshing floor? Do you have faith in him that he will return your grain and gather it to your threshing floor? Can you trust it to haul in your grain and bring it to your threshing floor?
13 “The ostriches’ wings flap joyously But are they the pinion and plumage of a stork? “The wings of the ostrich wave proudly, but are they the pinions and plumage of love? “The wings of the ostrich flap joyfully, though they cannot compare with the wings and feathers of the stork.
14 For she leaves her eggs to the earth And warms them in the dust, For she leaves her eggs to the earth and lets them be warmed on the ground, She lays her eggs on the ground and lets them warm in the sand,
15 And she forgets that a foot may crush them, Or that a beast of the field may trample them. forgetting that a foot may crush them and that the wild beast may trample them. unmindful that a foot may crush them, that some wild animal may trample them.
16 She treats her children cruelly, as if they were not hers; Though her labor be empty, she is without dread, She deals cruelly with her young, as if they were not hers; though her labor be in vain, yet she has no fear, She treats her young harshly, as if they were not hers; she cares not that her labor was in vain,
17 Because God has made her forget wisdom, And has not given her a share of understanding. because God has made her forget wisdom and given her no share in understanding. for God did not endow her with wisdom or give her a share of good sense.
18 When she raises herself up high, She laughs at the horse and his rider. When she rouses herself to flee, she laughs at the horse and his rider. Yet when she spreads her feathers to run, she laughs at horse and rider.
19 “Do you give the horse his might? Do you clothe his neck with a mane? “Do you give the horse his might? Do you clothe his neck with a mane? “Do you give the horse its strength or clothe its neck with a flowing mane?
20 Do you make him leap like the locust? His splendid snorting is terrible. Do you make him leap like the locust? His majestic snorting is terrifying. Do you make it leap like a locust, striking terror with its proud snorting?
21 He paws in the valley and rejoices in his power; He goes out to meet the weapons. He paws in the valley and exults in his strength; he goes out to meet the weapons. It paws fiercely, rejoicing in its strength, and charges into the fray.
22 He laughs at dread and is not dismayed; And he does not turn back from the sword. He laughs at fear and is not dismayed; he does not turn back from the sword. It laughs at fear, afraid of nothing; it does not shy away from the sword.
23 The quiver rattles against him, The flashing spear and javelin. Upon him rattle the quiver, the flashing spear, and the javelin. The quiver rattles against its side, along with the flashing spear and lance.
24 With shaking and rage he races over the ground, And he does not stand still at the sound of the trumpet. With fierceness and rage he swallows the ground; he cannot stand still at the sound of the trumpet. In frenzied excitement it eats up the ground; it cannot stand still when the trumpet sounds.
25 As often as the trumpet sounds he says, ‘Aha!’ And he scents the battle from afar, And the thunder of the commanders and the shout of war. When the trumpet sounds, he says ‘Aha!’ He smells the battle from afar, the thunder of the captains, and the shouting. At the blast of the trumpet it snorts, ‘Aha!’ It catches the scent of battle from afar, the shout of commanders and the battle cry.
26 “Is it by your understanding that the hawk soars, Stretching his wings toward the south? “Is it by your understanding that the hawk soars and spreads his wings toward the south? “Does the hawk take flight by your wisdom and spread its wings toward the south?
27 Is it at your command that the eagle goes on high And raises his nest high? Is it at your command that the eagle mounts up and makes his nest on high? Does the eagle soar at your command and build its nest on high?
28 On the cliff he dwells and lodges, Upon the rocky crag, a fortress. On the rock he dwells and makes his home, on the rocky crag and stronghold. It dwells on a cliff and stays there at night; a rocky crag is its stronghold.
29 From there he spies out food; His eyes see it from afar. From there he spies out the prey; his eyes behold it from far away. From there it looks for food; its eyes detect it from afar.
30 His young ones also suck up blood; And where the slain are, there is he.” His young ones suck up blood, and where the slain are, there is he.” Its young ones feast on blood, and where the slain are, there it is.”
