Doth a wise man answer with vain knowledge? And fill with an east wind his belly? | “Should a wise man answer with windy knowledge, and fill his belly with the east wind? | “Would a wise person answer with empty notions or fill their belly with the hot east wind? |

Yea, thou dost make reverence void, And dost diminish meditation before God. | But you are doing away with the fear of God and hindering meditation before God. | But you even undermine piety and hinder devotion to God. |
For thy mouth teacheth thine iniquity, And thou chooseth the tongue of the subtile. | For your iniquity teaches your mouth, and you choose the tongue of the crafty. | Your sin prompts your mouth; you adopt the tongue of the crafty. |
Thy mouth declareth thee wicked, and not I, And thy lips testify against thee. | Your own mouth condemns you, and not I; your own lips testify against you. | Your own mouth condemns you, not mine; your own lips testify against you. |
The first man art thou born? And before the heights wast thou formed? | “Are you the first man who was born? Or were you brought forth before the hills? | “Are you the first man ever born? Were you brought forth before the hills? |
Of the secret counsel of God dost thou hear? And withdrawest thou unto thee wisdom? | Have you listened in the council of God? And do you limit wisdom to yourself? | Do you listen in on God’s council? Do you have a monopoly on wisdom? |
What hast thou known, and we know not? Understandest thou -- and it is not with us? | What do you know that we do not know? What do you understand that is not clear to us? | What do you know that we do not know? What insights do you have that we do not have? |
Both the gray-headed And the very aged are among us -- Greater than thy father in days. | Both the gray-haired and the aged are among us, older than your father. | The gray-haired and the aged are on our side, men even older than your father. |
Too few for thee are the comforts of God? And a gentle word is with thee, | Are the comforts of God too small for you, or the word that deals gently with you? | Are God’s consolations not enough for you, words spoken gently to you? |
What -- doth thine heart take thee away? And what -- are thine eyes high? | Why does your heart carry you away, and why do your eyes flash, | Why has your heart carried you away, and why do your eyes flash, |
For thou turnest against God thy spirit? And hast brought out words from thy mouth: | that you turn your spirit against God and bring such words out of your mouth? | so that you vent your rage against God and pour out such words from your mouth? |
What is man that he is pure, And that he is righteous, one born of woman? | What is man, that he can be pure? Or he who is born of a woman, that he can be righteous? | “What are mortals, that they could be pure, or those born of woman, that they could be righteous? |
Lo, in His holy ones He putteth no credence, And the heavens have not been pure in His eyes. | Behold, God puts no trust in his holy ones, and the heavens are not pure in his sight; | If God places no trust in his holy ones, if even the heavens are not pure in his eyes, |
Also -- surely abominable and filthy Is man drinking as water perverseness. | how much less one who is abominable and corrupt, a man who drinks injustice like water! | how much less mortals, who are vile and corrupt, who drink up evil like water! |
I shew thee -- hearken to me -- And this I have seen and declare: | “I will show you; hear me, and what I have seen I will declare | “Listen to me and I will explain to you; let me tell you what I have seen, |
Which the wise declare -- And have not hid -- from their fathers. | (what wise men have told, without hiding it from their fathers, | what the wise have declared, hiding nothing received from their ancestors |
To them alone was the land given, And a stranger passed not over into their midst: | to whom alone the land was given, and no stranger passed among them). | (to whom alone the land was given when no foreigners moved among them): |
'All days of the wicked he is paining himself, And few years have been laid up for the terrible one. | The wicked man writhes in pain all his days, through all the years that are laid up for the ruthless. | All his days the wicked man suffers torment, the ruthless man through all the years stored up for him. |
A fearful voice is in his ears, In peace doth a destroyer come to him. | Dreadful sounds are in his ears; in prosperity the destroyer will come upon him. | Terrifying sounds fill his ears; when all seems well, marauders attack him. |
He believeth not to return from darkness, And watched is he for the sword. | He does not believe that he will return out of darkness, and he is marked for the sword. | He despairs of escaping the realm of darkness; he is marked for the sword. |
He is wandering for bread -- 'Where is it?' He hath known that ready at his hand Is a day of darkness. | He wanders abroad for bread, saying, ‘Where is it?’ He knows that a day of darkness is ready at his hand; | He wanders about for food like a vulture; he knows the day of darkness is at hand. |
Terrify him do adversity and distress, They prevail over him As a king ready for a boaster. | distress and anguish terrify him; they prevail against him, like a king ready for battle. | Distress and anguish fill him with terror; troubles overwhelm him, like a king poised to attack, |
For he stretched out against God his hand, And against the Mighty he maketh himself mighty. | Because he has stretched out his hand against God and defies the Almighty, | because he shakes his fist at God and vaunts himself against the Almighty, |
He runneth unto Him with a neck, With thick bosses of his shields. | running stubbornly against him with a thickly bossed shield; | defiantly charging against him with a thick, strong shield. |
For he hath covered his face with his fat, And maketh vigour over his confidence. | because he has covered his face with his fat and gathered fat upon his waist | “Though his face is covered with fat and his waist bulges with flesh, |
And he inhabiteth cities cut off, houses not dwelt in, That have been ready to become heaps. | and has lived in desolate cities, in houses that none should inhabit, which were ready to become heaps of ruins; | he will inhabit ruined towns and houses where no one lives, houses crumbling to rubble. |
He is not rich, nor doth his wealth rise, Nor doth he stretch out on earth their continuance. | he will not be rich, and his wealth will not endure, nor will his possessions spread over the earth; | He will no longer be rich and his wealth will not endure, nor will his possessions spread over the land. |
He turneth not aside from darkness, His tender branch doth a flame dry up, And he turneth aside at the breath of His mouth! | he will not depart from darkness; the flame will dry up his shoots, and by the breath of his mouth he will depart. | He will not escape the darkness; a flame will wither his shoots, and the breath of God’s mouth will carry him away. |
Let him not put credence in vanity, He hath been deceived, For vanity is his recompence. | Let him not trust in emptiness, deceiving himself, for emptiness will be his payment. | Let him not deceive himself by trusting what is worthless, for he will get nothing in return. |
Not in his day is it completed, And his bending branch is not green. | It will be paid in full before his time, and his branch will not be green. | Before his time he will wither, and his branches will not flourish. |
He shaketh off as a vine his unripe fruit, And casteth off as an olive his blossom. | He will shake off his unripe grape like the vine, and cast off his blossom like the olive tree. | He will be like a vine stripped of its unripe grapes, like an olive tree shedding its blossoms. |
For the company of the profane is gloomy, And fire hath consumed tents of bribery. | For the company of the godless is barren, and fire consumes the tents of bribery. | For the company of the godless will be barren, and fire will consume the tents of those who love bribes. |
To conceive misery, and to bear iniquity, Even their heart doth prepare deceit. | They conceive trouble and give birth to evil, and their womb prepares deceit.” | They conceive trouble and give birth to evil; their womb fashions deceit.” |
