1 THEN answered Eliphaz the Temanite, and said, Then Eliphaz the Temanite answered and said: Then Eliphaz the Temanite replied:
2 Should a spiritually minded man answer with knowledge and then become enraged? “Should a wise man answer with windy knowledge, and fill his belly with the east wind? “Would a wise person answer with empty notions or fill their belly with the hot east wind?
3 Should he admonish with unprofitable talk, or with words that are worthless? Should he argue in unprofitable talk, or in words with which he can do no good? Would they argue with useless words, with speeches that have no value?
4 Yea, you also are discarding reverence, and talk too much in the presence of God. But you are doing away with the fear of God and hindering meditation before God. But you even undermine piety and hinder devotion to God.
5 For your mouth is accustomed to utter sinful things, and you choose the deceitful tongue of the crafty. For your iniquity teaches your mouth, and you choose the tongue of the crafty. Your sin prompts your mouth; you adopt the tongue of the crafty.
6 Your own mouth condemns you, and not I; yea, your own lips testify against you in my presence. Your own mouth condemns you, and not I; your own lips testify against you. Your own mouth condemns you, not mine; your own lips testify against you.
7 Are you the first man that was born? Or were you conceived before the hills? “Are you the first man who was born? Or were you brought forth before the hills? “Are you the first man ever born? Were you brought forth before the hills?
8 Have you heard of the secrets of God? Has his wisdom been revealed to you? Have you listened in the council of God? And do you limit wisdom to yourself? Do you listen in on God’s council? Do you have a monopoly on wisdom?
9 Or what do you know that we do not know? Or what do you under, stand that we do not understand? What do you know that we do not know? What do you understand that is not clear to us? What do you know that we do not know? What insights do you have that we do not have?
10 Behold, there are among us the gray-headed and the very aged men, much older in days than your father. Both the gray-haired and the aged are among us, older than your father. The gray-haired and the aged are on our side, men even older than your father.
11 Now talk less of God's threats, and speak comfortingly to yourself. Are the comforts of God too small for you, or the word that deals gently with you? Are God’s consolations not enough for you, words spoken gently to you?
12 Why does your heart boast? And what do your eyes wink at, Why does your heart carry you away, and why do your eyes flash, Why has your heart carried you away, and why do your eyes flash,
13 That you boast in the presence of God, and let such words go out of your mouth? that you turn your spirit against God and bring such words out of your mouth? so that you vent your rage against God and pour out such words from your mouth?
14 What is man, that he should be innocent? Or he that is born of a woman, that he should be righteous? What is man, that he can be pure? Or he who is born of a woman, that he can be righteous? “What are mortals, that they could be pure, or those born of woman, that they could be righteous?
15 Behold, he puts no trust in his saints; yea, the heavens are not clean in his sight. Behold, God puts no trust in his holy ones, and the heavens are not pure in his sight; If God places no trust in his holy ones, if even the heavens are not pure in his eyes,
16 Even though man should be rejected and afflicted, yet he shall drink iniquity like water. how much less one who is abominable and corrupt, a man who drinks injustice like water! how much less mortals, who are vile and corrupt, who drink up evil like water!
17 Hear me, I will show you; and that which I have seen I will repeat; “I will show you; hear me, and what I have seen I will declare “Listen to me and I will explain to you; let me tell you what I have seen,
18 That which wise men have declared, and did not hide from their fathers; (what wise men have told, without hiding it from their fathers, what the wise have declared, hiding nothing received from their ancestors
19 To whom alone the land was given, and no stranger passed among them. to whom alone the land was given, and no stranger passed among them). (to whom alone the land was given when no foreigners moved among them):
20 The wicked man magnifies himself all his days, and the number of the years of the violent man is hidden. The wicked man writhes in pain all his days, through all the years that are laid up for the ruthless. All his days the wicked man suffers torment, the ruthless man through all the years stored up for him.
21 A dreadful sound is in his ears; in prosperity the spoiler shall come upon him. Dreadful sounds are in his ears; in prosperity the destroyer will come upon him. Terrifying sounds fill his ears; when all seems well, marauders attack him.
22 He does not believe that he shall be overthrown because of the darkness, and that he shall see the sword. He does not believe that he will return out of darkness, and he is marked for the sword. He despairs of escaping the realm of darkness; he is marked for the sword.
23 He flees because of the threat of judgment; he does not know that the day of darkness is already at his hand, He wanders abroad for bread, saying, ‘Where is it?’ He knows that a day of darkness is ready at his hand; He wanders about for food like a vulture; he knows the day of darkness is at hand.
24 Trouble and anguish shall overtake him, like a king ready for the battle, distress and anguish terrify him; they prevail against him, like a king ready for battle. Distress and anguish fill him with terror; troubles overwhelm him, like a king poised to attack,
25 Because he has stretched out his hand against God, and strengthened himself against the Almighty. Because he has stretched out his hand against God and defies the Almighty, because he shakes his fist at God and vaunts himself against the Almighty,
26 He runs against him proudly, and strangles him, with the multitudes of his shields; running stubbornly against him with a thickly bossed shield; defiantly charging against him with a thick, strong shield.
27 Because he has deceived himself with his wealth, and he places Pleiades above Aldebaran. because he has covered his face with his fat and gathered fat upon his waist “Though his face is covered with fat and his waist bulges with flesh,
28 And he dwells in desolate cities, which no man has inhabited; then he prepares for war. and has lived in desolate cities, in houses that none should inhabit, which were ready to become heaps of ruins; he will inhabit ruined towns and houses where no one lives, houses crumbling to rubble.
29 He shall not continue, neither shall his strength endure, nor shall his words be established upon the earth. he will not be rich, and his wealth will not endure, nor will his possessions spread over the earth; He will no longer be rich and his wealth will not endure, nor will his possessions spread over the land.
30 He shall not depart out of darkness; the flame shall dry up his branches, and by the breath of his mouth shall he be rejected. he will not depart from darkness; the flame will dry up his shoots, and by the breath of his mouth he will depart. He will not escape the darkness; a flame will wither his shoots, and the breath of God’s mouth will carry him away.
31 Let him not trust in deceptive vanity, for his growth is in vain. Let him not trust in emptiness, deceiving himself, for emptiness will be his payment. Let him not deceive himself by trusting what is worthless, for he will get nothing in return.
32 He shall dry up before his time, and the work of his hands shall not be found. It will be paid in full before his time, and his branch will not be green. Before his time he will wither, and his branches will not flourish.
33 He shall shake off his unripe grapes, as the vine, and shall cast off his flowers as the olive tree. He will shake off his unripe grape like the vine, and cast off his blossom like the olive tree. He will be like a vine stripped of its unripe grapes, like an olive tree shedding its blossoms.
34 For the congregation of the godless shall be desolate, and fire shall consume the tabernacle of the wicked. For the company of the godless is barren, and fire consumes the tents of bribery. For the company of the godless will be barren, and fire will consume the tents of those who love bribes.
35 They conceive mischief and bring forth deceit, and their belly is full of guile. They conceive trouble and give birth to evil, and their womb prepares deceit.” They conceive trouble and give birth to evil; their womb fashions deceit.”
