1 Then answered Eliphaz the Temanite, and said: Then Eliphaz the Temanite answered and said: Then Eliphaz the Temanite replied:
2 Should a wise man make answer with windy knowledge, And fill his belly with the east wind? “Should a wise man answer with windy knowledge, and fill his belly with the east wind? “Would a wise person answer with empty notions or fill their belly with the hot east wind?
3 Should he reason with unprofitable talk, Or with speeches wherewith he can do no good? Should he argue in unprofitable talk, or in words with which he can do no good? Would they argue with useless words, with speeches that have no value?
4 Yea, thou doest away with fear, And impairest devotion before God. But you are doing away with the fear of God and hindering meditation before God. But you even undermine piety and hinder devotion to God.
5 For thine iniquity teacheth thy mouth, And thou choosest the tongue of the crafty. For your iniquity teaches your mouth, and you choose the tongue of the crafty. Your sin prompts your mouth; you adopt the tongue of the crafty.
6 Thine own mouth condemneth thee, and not I; Yea, thine own lips testify against thee. Your own mouth condemns you, and not I; your own lips testify against you. Your own mouth condemns you, not mine; your own lips testify against you.
7 Art thou the first man that was born? Or wast thou brought forth before the hills? “Are you the first man who was born? Or were you brought forth before the hills? “Are you the first man ever born? Were you brought forth before the hills?
8 Dost thou hearken in the council of God? And dost thou restrain wisdom to thyself? Have you listened in the council of God? And do you limit wisdom to yourself? Do you listen in on God’s council? Do you have a monopoly on wisdom?
9 What knowest thou, that we know not? What understandest thou, which is not in us? What do you know that we do not know? What do you understand that is not clear to us? What do you know that we do not know? What insights do you have that we do not have?
10 With us are both the gray-headed and the very aged men, Much older than thy father. Both the gray-haired and the aged are among us, older than your father. The gray-haired and the aged are on our side, men even older than your father.
11 Are the consolations of God too small for thee, And the word that dealeth gently with thee? Are the comforts of God too small for you, or the word that deals gently with you? Are God’s consolations not enough for you, words spoken gently to you?
12 Why doth thy heart carry thee away? And why do thine eyes wink? Why does your heart carry you away, and why do your eyes flash, Why has your heart carried you away, and why do your eyes flash,
13 That thou turnest thy spirit against God, And lettest such words go out of thy mouth. that you turn your spirit against God and bring such words out of your mouth? so that you vent your rage against God and pour out such words from your mouth?
14 What is man, that he should be clean? And he that is born of a woman, that he should be righteous? What is man, that he can be pure? Or he who is born of a woman, that he can be righteous? “What are mortals, that they could be pure, or those born of woman, that they could be righteous?
15 Behold, He putteth no trust in His holy ones; Yea, the heavens are not clean in His sight. Behold, God puts no trust in his holy ones, and the heavens are not pure in his sight; If God places no trust in his holy ones, if even the heavens are not pure in his eyes,
16 How much less one that is abominable and impure, Man who drinketh iniquity like water! how much less one who is abominable and corrupt, a man who drinks injustice like water! how much less mortals, who are vile and corrupt, who drink up evil like water!
17 I will tell thee, hear thou me; And that which I have seen I will declare-- “I will show you; hear me, and what I have seen I will declare “Listen to me and I will explain to you; let me tell you what I have seen,
18 Which wise men have told From their fathers, and have not hid it; (what wise men have told, without hiding it from their fathers, what the wise have declared, hiding nothing received from their ancestors
19 Unto whom alone the land was given, And no stranger passed among them. to whom alone the land was given, and no stranger passed among them). (to whom alone the land was given when no foreigners moved among them):
20 The wicked man travaileth with pain all his days, Even the number of years that are laid up for the oppressor. The wicked man writhes in pain all his days, through all the years that are laid up for the ruthless. All his days the wicked man suffers torment, the ruthless man through all the years stored up for him.
21 A sound of terrors is in his ears: In prosperity the destroyer shall come upon him. Dreadful sounds are in his ears; in prosperity the destroyer will come upon him. Terrifying sounds fill his ears; when all seems well, marauders attack him.
22 He believeth not that he shall return out of darkness, And he is waited for of the sword. He does not believe that he will return out of darkness, and he is marked for the sword. He despairs of escaping the realm of darkness; he is marked for the sword.
23 He wandereth abroad for bread: 'Where is it?' He knoweth that the day of darkness is ready at his hand. He wanders abroad for bread, saying, ‘Where is it?’ He knows that a day of darkness is ready at his hand; He wanders about for food like a vulture; he knows the day of darkness is at hand.
24 Distress and anguish overwhelm him; They prevail against him, as a king ready to the battle. distress and anguish terrify him; they prevail against him, like a king ready for battle. Distress and anguish fill him with terror; troubles overwhelm him, like a king poised to attack,
25 Because he hath stretched out his hand against God, And behaveth himself proudly against the Almighty; Because he has stretched out his hand against God and defies the Almighty, because he shakes his fist at God and vaunts himself against the Almighty,
26 He runneth upon him with a stiff neck, With the thick bosses of his bucklers. running stubbornly against him with a thickly bossed shield; defiantly charging against him with a thick, strong shield.
27 Because he hath covered his face with his fatness, And made collops of fat on his loins; because he has covered his face with his fat and gathered fat upon his waist “Though his face is covered with fat and his waist bulges with flesh,
28 And he hath dwelt in desolate cities, In houses which no man would inhabit, Which were ready to become heaps. and has lived in desolate cities, in houses that none should inhabit, which were ready to become heaps of ruins; he will inhabit ruined towns and houses where no one lives, houses crumbling to rubble.
29 He shall not be rich, neither shall his substance continue, Neither shall their produce bend to the earth. he will not be rich, and his wealth will not endure, nor will his possessions spread over the earth; He will no longer be rich and his wealth will not endure, nor will his possessions spread over the land.
30 He shall not depart out of darkness; The flame shall dry up his branches, And by the breath of His mouth shall he go away. he will not depart from darkness; the flame will dry up his shoots, and by the breath of his mouth he will depart. He will not escape the darkness; a flame will wither his shoots, and the breath of God’s mouth will carry him away.
31 Let him not trust in vanity, deceiving himself; For vanity shall be his recompense. Let him not trust in emptiness, deceiving himself, for emptiness will be his payment. Let him not deceive himself by trusting what is worthless, for he will get nothing in return.
32 It shall be accomplished before his time, And his branch shall not be leafy. It will be paid in full before his time, and his branch will not be green. Before his time he will wither, and his branches will not flourish.
33 He shall shake off his unripe grape as the vine, And shall cast off his flower as the olive. He will shake off his unripe grape like the vine, and cast off his blossom like the olive tree. He will be like a vine stripped of its unripe grapes, like an olive tree shedding its blossoms.
34 For the company of the godless shall be desolate, And fire shall consume the tents of bribery. For the company of the godless is barren, and fire consumes the tents of bribery. For the company of the godless will be barren, and fire will consume the tents of those who love bribes.
35 They conceive mischief, and bring forth iniquity, And their belly prepareth deceit. They conceive trouble and give birth to evil, and their womb prepares deceit.” They conceive trouble and give birth to evil; their womb fashions deceit.”
