1	And it came to pass in the fourth year of Jehoiakim son of Josiah king of Judah, that this word came to Jeremiah from YHWH, saying:	In the fourth year of Jehoiakim the son of Josiah, king of Judah, this word came to Jeremiah from the LORD:	In the fourth year of Jehoiakim son of Josiah king of Judah, this word came to Jeremiah from the LORD:
2	“Take for yourself a scroll of a book, and write on it all the words that I have spoken to you against Israel, and against Judah, and against all the nations, from the day I spoke to you, from the days of Josiah even to this day.	“Take a scroll and write on it all the words that I have spoken to you against Israel and Judah and all the nations, from the day I spoke to you, from the days of Josiah until today.	“Take a scroll and write on it all the words I have spoken to you concerning Israel, Judah and all the other nations from the time I began speaking to you in the reign of Josiah till now.
3	Perhaps the house of Judah will hear all the disaster that I am planning to bring upon them, so that each man might turn back from his evil way; and I will forgive their iniquity and their sin.	It may be that the house of Judah will hear all the disaster that I intend to do to them, so that every one may turn from his evil way, and that I may forgive their iniquity and their sin.”	Perhaps when the people of Judah hear about every disaster I plan to inflict on them, they will each turn from their wicked ways; then I will forgive their wickedness and their sin.”
4	And Jeremiah called Baruch son of Neriah, and Baruch wrote from the mouth of Jeremiah all the words of YHWH that He had spoken to him on a scroll of a book.	Then Jeremiah called Baruch the son of Neriah, and Baruch wrote on a scroll at the dictation of Jeremiah all the words of the LORD that he had spoken to him.	So Jeremiah called Baruch son of Neriah, and while Jeremiah dictated all the words the LORD had spoken to him, Baruch wrote them on the scroll.
5	And Jeremiah commanded Baruch, saying: “I am restrained; I am not able to enter the house of YHWH.	And Jeremiah ordered Baruch, saying, “I am banned from going to the house of the LORD,	Then Jeremiah told Baruch, “I am restricted; I am not allowed to go to the LORD’s temple.
6	And you are to go and call out from the scroll, which you have written from my mouth, the words of YHWH into the ears of the people in the house of YHWH, on the day of fasting. And also you shall read them into the ears of all Judah who are coming from their cities.	so you are to go, and on a day of fasting in the hearing of all the people in the LORD’s house you shall read the words of the LORD from the scroll that you have written at my dictation. You shall read them also in the hearing of all the men of Judah who come out of their cities.	So you go to the house of the LORD on a day of fasting and read to the people from the scroll the words of the LORD that you wrote as I dictated. Read them to all the people of Judah who come in from their towns.
7	Perhaps their plea for mercy will fall before YHWH, and each man will turn back from his evil way—for great is the anger and the fury with which YHWH has spoken against this people!	It may be that their plea for mercy will come before the LORD, and that every one will turn from his evil way, for great is the anger and wrath that the LORD has pronounced against this people.”	Perhaps they will bring their petition before the LORD and will each turn from their wicked ways, for the anger and wrath pronounced against this people by the LORD are great.”
8	And Baruch son of Neriah did according to all that Jeremiah the prophet had commanded him, calling out from the book of the words of YHWH in the house of YHWH.	And Baruch the son of Neriah did all that Jeremiah the prophet ordered him about reading from the scroll the words of the LORD in the LORD’s house.	Baruch son of Neriah did everything Jeremiah the prophet told him to do; at the LORD’s temple he read the words of the LORD from the scroll.
9	And it came to pass in the fifth year of Jehoiakim son of Josiah king of Judah, in the ninth month, that they called a fast before YHWH to all the people in Jerusalem, and to all the people who came from the cities of Judah to Jerusalem.	In the fifth year of Jehoiakim the son of Josiah, king of Judah, in the ninth month, all the people in Jerusalem and all the people who came from the cities of Judah to Jerusalem proclaimed a fast before the LORD.	In the ninth month of the fifth year of Jehoiakim son of Josiah king of Judah, a time of fasting before the LORD was proclaimed for all the people in Jerusalem and those who had come from the towns of Judah.
10	And Baruch called out from the book of the words of Jeremiah in the house of YHWH, in the chamber of Gemariah son of Shaphan the scribe, in the upper court at the entrance of the New Gate of the house of YHWH, into the ears of all the people.	Then, in the hearing of all the people, Baruch read the words of Jeremiah from the scroll, in the house of the LORD, in the chamber of Gemariah the son of Shaphan the secretary, which was in the upper court, at the entry of the New Gate of the LORD’s house.	From the room of Gemariah son of Shaphan the secretary, which was in the upper courtyard at the entrance of the New Gate of the temple, Baruch read to all the people at the LORD’s temple the words of Jeremiah from the scroll.
11	And Micaiah son of Gemariah son of Shaphan heard all the words of YHWH from the book,	When Micaiah the son of Gemariah, son of Shaphan, heard all the words of the LORD from the scroll,	When Micaiah son of Gemariah, the son of Shaphan, heard all the words of the LORD from the scroll,
12	and he went down to the house of the king, into the chamber of the scribe, and there all the princes were sitting—Elishama the scribe, and Delaiah son of Shemaiah, and Elnathan son of Achbor, and Gemariah son of Shaphan, and Zedekiah son of Hananiah, and all the princes.	he went down to the king’s house, into the secretary’s chamber, and all the officials were sitting there: Elishama the secretary, Delaiah the son of Shemaiah, Elnathan the son of Achbor, Gemariah the son of Shaphan, Zedekiah the son of Hananiah, and all the officials.	he went down to the secretary’s room in the royal palace, where all the officials were sitting: Elishama the secretary, Delaiah son of Shemaiah, Elnathan son of Akbor, Gemariah son of Shaphan, Zedekiah son of Hananiah, and all the other officials.
13	And Micaiah declared to them all the words that he had heard when Baruch read from the book into the ears of the people.	And Micaiah told them all the words that he had heard, when Baruch read the scroll in the hearing of the people.	After Micaiah told them everything he had heard Baruch read to the people from the scroll,
14	And all the princes sent to Baruch Jehudi son of Nethaniah son of Shelemiah son of Cushi, saying: “The scroll, which you have called out from it into the ears of the people, take it in your hand and come.” And Baruch son of Neriah took the scroll in his hand and came to them.	Then all the officials sent Jehudi the son of Nethaniah, son of Shelemiah, son of Cushi, to say to Baruch, “Take in your hand the scroll that you read in the hearing of the people, and come.” So Baruch the son of Neriah took the scroll in his hand and came to them.	all the officials sent Jehudi son of Nethaniah, the son of Shelemiah, the son of Cushi, to say to Baruch, “Bring the scroll from which you have read to the people and come.” So Baruch son of Neriah went to them with the scroll in his hand.
15	And they said to him, “Sit down, now, and read it in our ears.” And Baruch read it in their ears.	And they said to him, “Sit down and read it.” So Baruch read it to them.	They said to him, “Sit down, please, and read it to us.” So Baruch read it to them.
16	And it came to pass at their hearing all the words, that they were in fear, each man to his neighbor, and said to Baruch: “We must surely declare to the king all these words.	When they heard all the words, they turned one to another in fear. And they said to Baruch, “We must report all these words to the king.”	When they heard all these words, they looked at each other in fear and said to Baruch, “We must report all these words to the king.”
17	And they asked Baruch, saying: “Declare, please, to us how did you write all these words? From his mouth?	Then they asked Baruch, “Tell us, please, how did you write all these words? Was it at his dictation?”	Then they asked Baruch, “Tell us, how did you come to write all this? Did Jeremiah dictate it?”
18	And Baruch gave the answer to them: “From his mouth he called out to me all these words, and I was writing upon the book in ink.	Baruch answered them, “He dictated all these words to me, while I wrote them with ink on the scroll.”	“Yes,” Baruch replied, “he dictated all these words to me, and I wrote them in ink on the scroll.”
19	And the princes said to Baruch, “Go and hide yourself, you and Jeremiah! And do not let a man know where you⁺ are.	Then the officials said to Baruch, “Go and hide, you and Jeremiah, and let no one know where you are.”	Then the officials said to Baruch, “You and Jeremiah, go and hide. Don’t let anyone know where you are.”
20	And they went to the king, into the court, and they stored the scroll in the chamber of Elishama the scribe; and they declared in the ears of the king all the words.	So they went into the court to the king, having put the scroll in the chamber of Elishama the secretary, and they reported all the words to the king.	After they put the scroll in the room of Elishama the secretary, they went to the king in the courtyard and reported everything to him.
21	And the king sent Jehudi to take the scroll, and he took it from the chamber of Elishama the scribe. And Jehudi read it in the ears of the king, and in the ears of all the princes who were standing beside the king.	Then the king sent Jehudi to get the scroll, and he took it from the chamber of Elishama the secretary. And Jehudi read it to the king and all the officials who stood beside the king.	The king sent Jehudi to get the scroll, and Jehudi brought it from the room of Elishama the secretary and read it to the king and all the officials standing beside him.
22	And the king was sitting in the house of the winter in the ninth month, and the hearth before his face was burning.	It was the ninth month, and the king was sitting in the winter house, and there was a fire burning in the fire pot before him.	It was the ninth month and the king was sitting in the winter apartment, with a fire burning in the firepot in front of him.
23	And it came to pass when Jehudi had read three or four columns that he cut it with the knife of a scribe and cast it into the fire that was on the hearth, until all the scroll was consumed upon the fire that was on the hearth.	As Jehudi read three or four columns, the king would cut them off with a knife and throw them into the fire in the fire pot, until the entire scroll was consumed in the fire that was in the fire pot.	Whenever Jehudi had read three or four columns of the scroll, the king cut them off with a scribe’s knife and threw them into the firepot, until the entire scroll was burned in the fire.
24	And they were not afraid and they did not tear their garments—the king and his servants who heard all these words.	Yet neither the king nor any of his servants who heard all these words was afraid, nor did they tear their garments.	The king and all his attendants who heard all these words showed no fear, nor did they tear their clothes.
25	And even Elnathan and Delaiah and Gemariah implored the king to not burn the scroll, and he would not listen to them.	Even when Elnathan and Delaiah and Gemariah urged the king not to burn the scroll, he would not listen to them.	Even though Elnathan, Delaiah and Gemariah urged the king not to burn the scroll, he would not listen to them.
26	And the king commanded Jerahmeel son of the king, and Seraiah son of Azriel, and Shelemiah son of Abdeel, to seize Baruch the scribe and Jeremiah the prophet; and YHWH hid them away.	And the king commanded Jerahmeel the king’s son and Seraiah the son of Azriel and Shelemiah the son of Abdeel to seize Baruch the secretary and Jeremiah the prophet, but the LORD hid them.	Instead, the king commanded Jerahmeel, a son of the king, Seraiah son of Azriel and Shelemiah son of Abdeel to arrest Baruch the scribe and Jeremiah the prophet. But the LORD had hidden them.
27	And the word of YHWH came to Jeremiah after the king had burned the scroll and the words that Baruch had written from the mouth of Jeremiah, saying:	Now after the king had burned the scroll with the words that Baruch wrote at Jeremiah’s dictation, the word of the LORD came to Jeremiah:	After the king burned the scroll containing the words that Baruch had written at Jeremiah’s dictation, the word of the LORD came to Jeremiah:
28	“Return, take for yourself another scroll, and write on it all the former words that were upon the first scroll, which Jehoiakim king of Judah has burned.	“Take another scroll and write on it all the former words that were in the first scroll, which Jehoiakim the king of Judah has burned.	“Take another scroll and write on it all the words that were on the first scroll, which Jehoiakim king of Judah burned up.
29	And you shall say to Jehoiakim king of Judah, thus says YHWH: You have burned this scroll, saying, ‘Why have you written on it saying the king of Babylon would surely come and destroy this land and cause to cease from it man and beast?	And concerning Jehoiakim king of Judah you shall say, ‘Thus says the LORD, You have burned this scroll, saying, “Why have you written in it that the king of Babylon will certainly come and destroy this land, and will cut off from it man and beast?”	Also tell Jehoiakim king of Judah, ‘This is what the LORD says: You burned that scroll and said, “Why did you write on it that the king of Babylon would certainly come and destroy this land and wipe from it both man and beast?”
30	Therefore thus says YHWH concerning Jehoiakim king of Judah: There will be no one unto him to sit on the throne of David, and his dead body will be cast out into the heat of the day and into the frost of the night!	Therefore thus says the LORD concerning Jehoiakim king of Judah: He shall have none to sit on the throne of David, and his dead body shall be cast out to the heat by day and the frost by night.	Therefore this is what the LORD says about Jehoiakim king of Judah: He will have no one to sit on the throne of David; his body will be thrown out and exposed to the heat by day and the frost by night.
31	And I will visit punishment upon him and upon his family and upon his servants for their iniquity, and I will bring on them and on those dwelling in Jerusalem and on the men of Judah all the disaster that I have spoken against them, and they did not listen.	And I will punish him and his offspring and his servants for their iniquity. I will bring upon them and upon the inhabitants of Jerusalem and upon the people of Judah all the disaster that I have pronounced against them, but they would not hear.’”	I will punish him and his children and his attendants for their wickedness; I will bring on them and those living in Jerusalem and the people of Judah every disaster I pronounced against them, because they have not listened.’”
32	And Jeremiah took another scroll and gave it to Baruch son of Neriah the scribe, and he wrote on it from the mouth of Jeremiah all the words of the book that Jehoiakim king of Judah had burned in the fire; and besides these were added to them many like words.	Then Jeremiah took another scroll and gave it to Baruch the scribe, the son of Neriah, who wrote on it at the dictation of Jeremiah all the words of the scroll that Jehoiakim king of Judah had burned in the fire. And many similar words were added to them.	So Jeremiah took another scroll and gave it to the scribe Baruch son of Neriah, and as Jeremiah dictated, Baruch wrote on it all the words of the scroll that Jehoiakim king of Judah had burned in the fire. And many similar words were added to them.
