1 And a famine shall be in the land, besides the first famine which was in the days of Abraham. And Isaak will go to Abimelech king of the Philistines to Gerar. Now there was a famine in the land, besides the former famine that was in the days of Abraham. And Isaac went to Gerar to Abimelech king of the Philistines. Now there was a famine in the land—besides the previous famine in Abraham’s time—and Isaac went to Abimelek king of the Philistines in Gerar.
2 And Jehovah will be seen to him, and will say, Thou shalt not go down to Egypt: dwell in the land which I shall say to thee. And the LORD appeared to him and said, “Do not go down to Egypt; dwell in the land of which I shall tell you. The LORD appeared to Isaac and said, “Do not go down to Egypt; live in the land where I tell you to live.
3 Sojourn in this land, and I will be with thee, and will bless thee, for to thee and to thy seed will I give all these lands; and I established the oath which I sware to Abraham thy father. Sojourn in this land, and I will be with you and will bless you, for to you and to your offspring I will give all these lands, and I will establish the oath that I swore to Abraham your father. Stay in this land for a while, and I will be with you and will bless you. For to you and your descendants I will give all these lands and will confirm the oath I swore to your father Abraham.
4 And I will increase thy seed as the stars of the heavens, and I will give to thy seed all these lands: and in thy seed shall all the nations of the earth be praised. I will multiply your offspring as the stars of heaven and will give to your offspring all these lands. And in your offspring all the nations of the earth shall be blessed, I will make your descendants as numerous as the stars in the sky and will give them all these lands, and through your offspring all nations on earth will be blessed,
5 Because that Abraham listened to my voice, and he will watch my watches, my commands, my statutes, and my precepts. because Abraham obeyed my voice and kept my charge, my commandments, my statutes, and my laws.” because Abraham obeyed me and did everything I required of him, keeping my commands, my decrees and my instructions.”
6 And Isaak dwelt in Gerar. So Isaac settled in Gerar. So Isaac stayed in Gerar.
7 And the men of the place will ask concerning his wife; and he will say, She is my sister: for he will be afraid to say, My wife, lest the men of the place will kill me for Rebekah, because she is good in appearance. When the men of the place asked him about his wife, he said, “She is my sister,” for he feared to say, “My wife,” thinking, “lest the men of the place should kill me because of Rebekah,” because she was attractive in appearance. When the men of that place asked him about his wife, he said, “She is my sister,” because he was afraid to say, “She is my wife.” He thought, “The men of this place might kill me on account of Rebekah, because she is beautiful.”
8 And it was when the days there were long to him, and Abimelech king of the Philistines shall bend forward through the window, and will see, and behold, Isaak playing with Rebekah his wife. When he had been there a long time, Abimelech king of the Philistines looked out of a window and saw Isaac laughing with Rebekah his wife. When Isaac had been there a long time, Abimelek king of the Philistines looked down from a window and saw Isaac caressing his wife Rebekah.
9 And Abimelech will call to Isaak, and will say, Surely, behold, she thy wife; and how saidst thou, She is my sister? And Isaak will say to him, Because I said, Lest I shall die for her. So Abimelech called Isaac and said, “Behold, she is your wife. How then could you say, ‘She is my sister’?” Isaac said to him, “Because I thought, ‘Lest I die because of her.’” So Abimelek summoned Isaac and said, “She is really your wife! Why did you say, ‘She is my sister’?” Isaac answered him, “Because I thought I might lose my life on account of her.”
10 And Abimelech will say, What this thou didst to us? nearly one of the people lay with thy wife, and thou broughtest blame upon us. Abimelech said, “What is this you have done to us? One of the people might easily have lain with your wife, and you would have brought guilt upon us.” Then Abimelek said, “What is this you have done to us? One of the men might well have slept with your wife, and you would have brought guilt upon us.”
11 And Abimelech will command all the people, saying, He touching this man and his wife, dying, shall die. So Abimelech warned all the people, saying, “Whoever touches this man or his wife shall surely be put to death.” So Abimelek gave orders to all the people: “Anyone who harms this man or his wife shall surely be put to death.”
12 And Isaak will sow in that land, and will find in that year a hundred measures; and Jehovah will praise him. And Isaac sowed in that land and reaped in the same year a hundredfold. The LORD blessed him, Isaac planted crops in that land and the same year reaped a hundredfold, because the LORD blessed him.
13 And the man will become great, and went going, and he became great, until that he became very great. and the man became rich, and gained more and more until he became very wealthy. The man became rich, and his wealth continued to grow until he became very wealthy.
14 And there will be to him possession of flocks, and possession of oxen, and service of many; and the Philistines will envy him. He had possessions of flocks and herds and many servants, so that the Philistines envied him. He had so many flocks and herds and servants that the Philistines envied him.
15 And all the wells which his father's servants digged in the days of Abraham his father, the Philistines stopped them and filled them with dust. (Now the Philistines had stopped and filled with earth all the wells that his father’s servants had dug in the days of Abraham his father.) So all the wells that his father’s servants had dug in the time of his father Abraham, the Philistines stopped up, filling them with earth.
16 And Abimelech will say to Isaak, Go from us: for thou wert strong above us exceedingly. And Abimelech said to Isaac, “Go away from us, for you are much mightier than we.” Then Abimelek said to Isaac, “Move away from us; you have become too powerful for us.”
17 And Isaak will go from thence, and will sit down in the valley of Gerar, and will dwell there. So Isaac departed from there and encamped in the Valley of Gerar and settled there. So Isaac moved away from there and encamped in the Valley of Gerar, where he settled.
18 And Isaak will dwell, and he will dig the wells of waters which they digged in the days of Abraham his father; and the Philistines will stop them after Abraham died: and he will call them the names after the names which his father called them. And Isaac dug again the wells of water that had been dug in the days of Abraham his father, which the Philistines had stopped after the death of Abraham. And he gave them the names that his father had given them. Isaac reopened the wells that had been dug in the time of his father Abraham, which the Philistines had stopped up after Abraham died, and he gave them the same names his father had given them.
19 And Isaak's servants will dig in the valley and will find there a well of waters. But when Isaac’s servants dug in the valley and found there a well of spring water, Isaac’s servants dug in the valley and discovered a well of fresh water there.
20 And the shepherds of Gerar will contend with Isaak's shepherds, saying; The waters are to us: and he will call the name of the well Esek; because they strove with him. the herdsmen of Gerar quarreled with Isaac’s herdsmen, saying, “The water is ours.” So he called the name of the well Esek, because they contended with him. But the herders of Gerar quarreled with those of Isaac and said, “The water is ours!” So he named the well Esek, because they disputed with him.
21 And they will dig another well, and will strive for that also: and he will call its name Sitnah. Then they dug another well, and they quarreled over that also, so he called its name Sitnah. Then they dug another well, but they quarreled over that one also; so he named it Sitnah.
22 And he will remove from thence, and will dig another well; and they strove not for that: and he will call its name Rehoboth; and he will say, For now Jehovah made wide for us, and made us fruitful in the earth. And he moved from there and dug another well, and they did not quarrel over it. So he called its name Rehoboth, saying, “For now the LORD has made room for us, and we shall be fruitful in the land.” He moved on from there and dug another well, and no one quarreled over it. He named it Rehoboth, saying, “Now the LORD has given us room and we will flourish in the land.”
23 And he will go up from thence to the well of the oath. From there he went up to Beersheba. From there he went up to Beersheba.
24 And Jehovah will be seen to him in that night, and will say, I am the God of Abraham thy father: thou shalt not be afraid, for I am with thee, and I praised thee, and I increased thy seed, for sake of Abraham my servant. And the LORD appeared to him the same night and said, “I am the God of Abraham your father. Fear not, for I am with you and will bless you and multiply your offspring for my servant Abraham’s sake.” That night the LORD appeared to him and said, “I am the God of your father Abraham. Do not be afraid, for I am with you; I will bless you and will increase the number of your descendants for the sake of my servant Abraham.”
25 And he will build an altar there, and will call on the name of Jehovah, and will stretch out there his tent: and there Isaak's servants will dig a well. So he built an altar there and called upon the name of the LORD and pitched his tent there. And there Isaac’s servants dug a well. Isaac built an altar there and called on the name of the LORD. There he pitched his tent, and there his servants dug a well.
26 And Abimelech went to him from Gerar, and Ahuzzath his friend, and Phicol, leader of his army. When Abimelech went to him from Gerar with Ahuzzath his adviser and Phicol the commander of his army, Meanwhile, Abimelek had come to him from Gerar, with Ahuzzath his personal adviser and Phicol the commander of his forces.
27 And Isaak will say to them, Wherefore came ye to me, and ye hated me, and will send me away from you? Isaac said to them, “Why have you come to me, seeing that you hate me and have sent me away from you?” Isaac asked them, “Why have you come to me, since you were hostile to me and sent me away?”
28 And they will say, Seeing we saw that Jehovah was with thee: and we will say, There shall be an oath between us, between us and between thee, and we will make a covenant with thee. They said, “We see plainly that the LORD has been with you. So we said, let there be a sworn pact between us, between you and us, and let us make a covenant with you, They answered, “We saw clearly that the LORD was with you; so we said, ‘There ought to be a sworn agreement between us’—between us and you. Let us make a treaty with you
29 Wilt thou do evil to us as that we touched thee not, as that we did to thee only good, and we sent thee away in peace, thou now art praised of Jehovah. that you will do us no harm, just as we have not touched you and have done to you nothing but good and have sent you away in peace. You are now the blessed of the LORD.” that you will do us no harm, just as we did not harm you but always treated you well and sent you away peacefully. And now you are blessed by the LORD.”
30 And he will make to them a drinking, and they will eat and drink. So he made them a feast, and they ate and drank. Isaac then made a feast for them, and they ate and drank.
31 And they will rise early in the morning, and they will swear, a man to his brother, and Isaak will send them away and they will go from him in peace. In the morning they rose early and exchanged oaths. And Isaac sent them on their way, and they departed from him in peace. Early the next morning the men swore an oath to each other. Then Isaac sent them on their way, and they went away peacefully.
32 And it shall be in that day, and Isaak's servants will come and announce to him concerning the well which they digged, and they will say to him, We found water. That same day Isaac’s servants came and told him about the well that they had dug and said to him, “We have found water.” That day Isaac’s servants came and told him about the well they had dug. They said, “We’ve found water!”
33 And he will call it oath: for this the name of the city the well of the oath till this day. He called it Shibah; therefore the name of the city is Beersheba to this day. He called it Shibah, and to this day the name of the town has been Beersheba.
34 And Esau will be the son of forty years, and he will take a wife, Judith, the daughter of Beeri the Hittite, and Bashemah, daughter of Elon the Hittite. When Esau was forty years old, he took Judith the daughter of Beeri the Hittite to be his wife, and Basemath the daughter of Elon the Hittite, When Esau was forty years old, he married Judith daughter of Beeri the Hittite, and also Basemath daughter of Elon the Hittite.
35 And they will be bitterness of spirit to Isaak and to Rebekah. and they made life bitter for Isaac and Rebekah. They were a source of grief to Isaac and Rebekah.
