1 Now there was a famine in the land [of Canaan], besides the previous famine that had occurred in the days of Abraham. So Isaac went to Gerar, to Abimelech king of the Philistines. Now there was a famine in the land, besides the former famine that was in the days of Abraham. And Isaac went to Gerar to Abimelech king of the Philistines. Now there was a famine in the land—besides the previous famine in Abraham’s time—and Isaac went to Abimelek king of the Philistines in Gerar.
2 The LORD appeared to him and said, “Do not go down to Egypt; stay in the land of which I will tell you. And the LORD appeared to him and said, “Do not go down to Egypt; dwell in the land of which I shall tell you. The LORD appeared to Isaac and said, “Do not go down to Egypt; live in the land where I tell you to live.
3 Live temporarily [as a resident] in this land and I will be with you and will bless and favor you, for I will give all these lands to you and to your descendants, and I will establish and carry out the oath which I swore to Abraham your father. Sojourn in this land, and I will be with you and will bless you, for to you and to your offspring I will give all these lands, and I will establish the oath that I swore to Abraham your father. Stay in this land for a while, and I will be with you and will bless you. For to you and your descendants I will give all these lands and will confirm the oath I swore to your father Abraham.
4 I will make your descendants multiply as the stars of the heavens, and will give to your descendants all these lands; and by your descendants shall all the nations of the earth be blessed, I will multiply your offspring as the stars of heaven and will give to your offspring all these lands. And in your offspring all the nations of the earth shall be blessed, I will make your descendants as numerous as the stars in the sky and will give them all these lands, and through your offspring all nations on earth will be blessed,
5 because Abraham listened to and obeyed My voice and [consistently] kept My charge, My commandments, My statutes, and My laws.” because Abraham obeyed my voice and kept my charge, my commandments, my statutes, and my laws.” because Abraham obeyed me and did everything I required of him, keeping my commands, my decrees and my instructions.”

8 It happened when he had been there a long time, that Abimelech king of the Philistines looked out of a window and saw Isaac caressing Rebekah his wife. 9 Then Abimelech called Isaac and said, “See here, Rebekah is in fact your wife! How did you [dare to] say to me, ‘She is my sister’?” And Isaac said to him, “Because I thought I might be killed because of her [desirability].” So Abimelech called Isaac and said, “Behold, she is your wife. How then could you say, ‘She is my sister’?” Isaac said to him, “Because I thought, ‘Lest I die because of her.’” So Abimelek summoned Isaac and said, “She is really your wife! Why did you say, ‘She is my sister’?” Isaac answered him, “Because I thought I might lose my life on account of her.”
10 Abimelech said, “What is this that you have done to us? One of the men [among our people] might easily have been intimate with your wife, and you would have brought guilt on us [before God].” Abimelech said, “What is this you have done to us? One of the people might easily have lain with your wife, and you would have brought guilt upon us.” Then Abimelek said, “What is this you have done to us? One of the men might well have slept with your wife, and you would have brought guilt upon us.”
11 Then Abimelech commanded all his people, “Whoever touches this man [Isaac] or his wife [Rebekah] shall without exception be put to death.” So Abimelech warned all the people, saying, “Whoever touches this man or his wife shall surely be put to death.” So Abimelek gave orders to all the people: “Anyone who harms this man or his wife shall surely be put to death.”
12 Then Isaac planted [seed] in that land [as a farmer] and reaped in the same year a hundred times [as much as he had planted], and the LORD blessed and favored him. And Isaac sowed in that land and reaped in the same year a hundredfold. The LORD blessed him, Isaac planted crops in that land and the same year reaped a hundredfold, because the LORD blessed him.
13 And the man [Isaac] became great and gained more and more until he became very wealthy and extremely distinguished; and the man became rich, and gained more and more until he became very wealthy. The man became rich, and his wealth continued to grow until he became very wealthy.
14 he owned flocks and herds and a great household [with a number of servants], and the Philistines envied him. He had possessions of flocks and herds and many servants, so that the Philistines envied him. He had so many flocks and herds and servants that the Philistines envied him.
15 Now all the wells which his father’s servants had dug in the days of Abraham his father, the Philistines stopped up by filling them with dirt. (Now the Philistines had stopped and filled with earth all the wells that his father’s servants had dug in the days of Abraham his father.) So all the wells that his father’s servants had dug in the time of his father Abraham, the Philistines stopped up, filling them with earth.
16 Then Abimelech said to Isaac, “Go away from here, because you are far too powerful for us.” And Abimelech said to Isaac, “Go away from us, for you are much mightier than we.” Then Abimelek said to Isaac, “Move away from us; you have become too powerful for us.”
17 So Isaac left that region and camped in the Valley of Gerar, and settled there. So Isaac departed from there and encamped in the Valley of Gerar and settled there. So Isaac moved away from there and encamped in the Valley of Gerar, where he settled.
18 Now Isaac again dug [and reopened] the wells of water which had been dug in the days of Abraham his father, because the Philistines had filled them up [with dirt] after the death of Abraham; and he gave the wells the same names that his father had given them. 22 He moved away from there and dug another well, and they did not quarrel over that one; so he named it Rehoboth (broad places), saying, “For now the LORD has made room for us, and we shall be prosperous in the land.” And he moved from there and dug another well, and they did not quarrel over it. So he called its name Rehoboth, saying, “For now the LORD has made room for us, and we shall be fruitful in the land.” He moved on from there and dug another well, and no one quarreled over it. He named it Rehoboth, saying, “Now the LORD has given us room and we will flourish in the land.”
23 Then he went up from there to Beersheba. From there he went up to Beersheba. From there he went up to Beersheba.
24 The LORD appeared to him the same night and said, “I am the God of Abraham your father; Do not be afraid, for I am with you. I will bless and favor you, and multiply your descendants, For the sake of My servant Abraham.” And the LORD appeared to him the same night and said, “I am the God of Abraham your father. Fear not, for I am with you and will bless you and multiply your offspring for my servant Abraham’s sake.” That night the LORD appeared to him and said, “I am the God of your father Abraham. Do not be afraid, for I am with you; I will bless you and will increase the number of your descendants for the sake of my servant Abraham.”
25 So Isaac built an altar there and called on the name of the LORD [in prayer]. He pitched his tent there; and there Isaac’s servants dug a well. 27 Isaac said to them, “Why have you [people] come to me, since you hate me and have sent me away from you?” Isaac said to them, “Why have you come to me, seeing that you hate me and have sent me away from you?” Isaac asked them, “Why have you come to me, since you were hostile to me and sent me away?”
28 They said, “We see clearly that the LORD has been with you; so we said, ‘There should now be an oath between us [with a curse for the one who breaks it], that is, between you and us, and let us make a covenant (binding agreement, solemn promise) with you, They said, “We see plainly that the LORD has been with you. So we said, let there be a sworn pact between us, between you and us, and let us make a covenant with you, They answered, “We saw clearly that the LORD was with you; so we said, ‘There ought to be a sworn agreement between us’—between us and you. Let us make a treaty with you
29 that you will not harm us, just as we have not touched you and have done nothing but good to you and have sent you away in peace. You are now the blessed and favored of the LORD!’” that you will do us no harm, just as we have not touched you and have done to you nothing but good and have sent you away in peace. You are now the blessed of the LORD.” that you will do us no harm, just as we did not harm you but always treated you well and sent you away peacefully. And now you are blessed by the LORD.”
30 Then Isaac held a [formal] banquet (covenant feast) for them, and they ate and drank. So he made them a feast, and they ate and drank. Isaac then made a feast for them, and they ate and drank.
31 They got up early in the morning and swore oaths [pledging to do nothing but good to each other]; and Isaac sent them on their way and they left him in peace. In the morning they rose early and exchanged oaths. And Isaac sent them on their way, and they departed from him in peace. Early the next morning the men swore an oath to each other. Then Isaac sent them on their way, and they went away peacefully.
32 Now on the same day, Isaac’s servants came and told him about the well they had dug, saying, “We have found water.” That same day Isaac’s servants came and told him about the well that they had dug and said to him, “We have found water.” That day Isaac’s servants came and told him about the well they had dug. They said, “We’ve found water!”
33 So he named the well Shibah; therefore the name of the city is Beersheba to this day. He called it Shibah; therefore the name of the city is Beersheba to this day. He called it Shibah, and to this day the name of the town has been Beersheba.
