The LORD appeared to Abraham by the oak of Mamre, as he sat in the entrance of his tent, while the day was growing hot. And the LORD appeared to him by the oaks of Mamre, as he sat at the door of his tent in the heat of the day. The LORD appeared to Abraham near the great trees of Mamre while he was sitting at the entrance to his tent in the heat of the day.
Looking up, he saw three men standing near him. When he saw them, he ran from the entrance of the tent to greet them; and bowing to the ground, He lifted up his eyes and looked, and behold, three men were standing in front of him. When he saw them, he ran from the tent door to meet them and bowed himself to the earth Abraham looked up and saw three men standing nearby. When he saw them, he hurried from the entrance of his tent to meet them and bowed low to the ground.
he said: “Sir, if it please you, do not go on past your servant. and said, “O Lord, if I have found favor in your sight, do not pass by your servant. He said, “If I have found favor in your eyes, my lord, do not pass your servant by.
Let some water be brought, that you may bathe your feet, and then rest under the tree. Let a little water be brought, and wash your feet, and rest yourselves under the tree, Let a little water be brought, and then you may all wash your feet and rest under this tree.
Now that you have come to your servant, let me bring you a little food, that you may refresh yourselves; and afterward you may go on your way.” “Very well,” they replied, “do as you have said.” while I bring a morsel of bread, that you may refresh yourselves, and after that you may pass on—since you have come to your servant.” So they said, “Do as you have said.” Let me get you something to eat, so you can be refreshed and then go on your way—now that you have come to your servant.” “Very well,” they answered, “do as you say.”
Abraham hurried into the tent to Sarah and said, “Quick, three measures of bran flour! Knead it and make bread.” And Abraham went quickly into the tent to Sarah and said, “Quick! Three seahs of fine flour! Knead it, and make cakes.” So Abraham hurried into the tent to Sarah. “Quick,” he said, “get three seahs of the finest flour and knead it and bake some bread.”
He ran to the herd, picked out a tender, choice calf, and gave it to a servant, who quickly prepared it. And Abraham ran to the herd and took a calf, tender and good, and gave it to a young man, who prepared it quickly. Then he ran to the herd and selected a choice, tender calf and gave it to a servant, who hurried to prepare it.
Then he got some curds and milk, as well as the calf that had been prepared, and set these before them, waiting on them under the tree while they ate. Then he took curds and milk and the calf that he had prepared, and set it before them. And he stood by them under the tree while they ate. He then brought some curds and milk and the calf that had been prepared, and set these before them. While they ate, he stood near them under a tree.
“Where is your wife Sarah?” they asked him. “There in the tent,” he replied. They said to him, “Where is Sarah your wife?” And he said, “She is in the tent.” “Where is your wife Sarah?” they asked him. “There, in the tent,” he said.
One of them said, “I will return to you about this time next year, and Sarah will then have a son.” Sarah was listening at the entrance of the tent, just behind him. The LORD said, “I will surely return to you about this time next year, and Sarah your wife shall have a son.” And Sarah was listening at the tent door behind him. Then one of them said, “I will surely return to you about this time next year, and Sarah your wife will have a son.” Now Sarah was listening at the entrance to the tent, which was behind him.
Now Abraham and Sarah were old, advanced in years, and Sarah had stopped having her menstrual periods. Now Abraham and Sarah were old, advanced in years. The way of women had ceased to be with Sarah. Abraham and Sarah were already very old, and Sarah was past the age of childbearing.
So Sarah laughed to herself and said, “Now that I am worn out and my husband is old, am I still to have sexual pleasure?” So Sarah laughed to herself, saying, “After I am worn out, and my lord is old, shall I have pleasure?” So Sarah laughed to herself as she thought, “After I am worn out and my lord is old, will I now have this pleasure?”
But the LORD said to Abraham: “Why did Sarah laugh and say, ‘Will I really bear a child, old as I am?’ The LORD said to Abraham, “Why did Sarah laugh and say, ‘Shall I indeed bear a child, now that I am old?’ Then the LORD said to Abraham, “Why did Sarah laugh and say, ‘Will I really have a child, now that I am old?’
Is anything too marvelous for the LORD to do? At the appointed time, about this time next year, I will return to you, and Sarah will have a son.” Is anything too hard for the LORD? At the appointed time I will return to you, about this time next year, and Sarah shall have a son.” Is anything too hard for the LORD? I will return to you at the appointed time next year, and Sarah will have a son.”
Sarah lied, saying, “I did not laugh,” because she was afraid. But he said, “Yes, you did.” But Sarah denied it, saying, “I did not laugh,” for she was afraid. He said, “No, but you did laugh.” Sarah was afraid, so she lied and said, “I did not laugh.” But he said, “Yes, you did laugh.”
With Abraham walking with them to see them on their way, the men set out from there and looked down toward Sodom. Then the men set out from there, and they looked down toward Sodom. And Abraham went with them to set them on their way. When the men got up to leave, they looked down toward Sodom, and Abraham walked along with them to see them on their way.
The LORD considered: Shall I hide from Abraham what I am about to do, The LORD said, “Shall I hide from Abraham what I am about to do, Then the LORD said, “Shall I hide from Abraham what I am about to do?
now that he is to become a great and mighty nation, and all the nations of the earth are to find blessing in him? seeing that Abraham shall surely become a great and mighty nation, and all the nations of the earth shall be blessed in him? Abraham will surely become a great and powerful nation, and all nations on earth will be blessed through him.
Indeed, I have singled him out that he may direct his children and his household in the future to keep the way of the LORD by doing what is right and just, so that the LORD may put into effect for Abraham the promises he made about him. For I have chosen him, that he may command his children and his household after him to keep the way of the LORD by doing righteousness and justice, so that the LORD may bring to Abraham what he has promised him.” For I have chosen him, so that he will direct his children and his household after him to keep the way of the LORD by doing what is right and just, so that the LORD will bring about for Abraham what he has promised him.”
So the LORD said: The outcry against Sodom and Gomorrah is so great, and their sin so grave, Then the LORD said, “Because the outcry against Sodom and Gomorrah is great and their sin is very grave, Then the LORD said, “The outcry against Sodom and Gomorrah is so great and their sin so grievous
that I must go down to see whether or not their actions are as bad as the cry against them that comes to me. I mean to find out. I will go down to see whether they have done altogether according to the outcry that has come to me. And if not, I will know.” that I will go down and see if what they have done is as bad as the outcry that has reached me. If not, I will know.”
As the men turned and walked on toward Sodom, Abraham remained standing before the LORD. So the men turned from there and went toward Sodom, but Abraham still stood before the LORD. The men turned away and went toward Sodom, but Abraham remained standing before the LORD.
Then Abraham drew near and said: “Will you really sweep away the righteous with the wicked? Then Abraham drew near and said, “Will you indeed sweep away the righteous with the wicked? Then Abraham approached him and said: “Will you sweep away the righteous with the wicked?
Suppose there were fifty righteous people in the city; would you really sweep away and not spare the place for the sake of the fifty righteous people within it? Suppose there are fifty righteous within the city. Will you then sweep away the place and not spare it for the fifty righteous who are in it? What if there are fifty righteous people in the city? Will you really sweep it away and not spare the place for the sake of the fifty righteous people in it?
Far be it from you to do such a thing, to kill the righteous with the wicked, so that the righteous and the wicked are treated alike! Far be it from you! Should not the judge of all the world do what is just?” Far be it from you to do such a thing, to put the righteous to death with the wicked, so that the righteous fare as the wicked! Far be that from you! Shall not the Judge of all the earth do what is just?” Far be it from you to do such a thing—to kill the righteous with the wicked, treating the righteous and the wicked alike. Far be it from you! Will not the Judge of all the earth do right?”
The LORD replied: If I find fifty righteous people in the city of Sodom, I will spare the whole place for their sake. And the LORD said, “If I find at Sodom fifty righteous in the city, I will spare the whole place for their sake.” The LORD said, “If I find fifty righteous people in the city of Sodom, I will spare the whole place for their sake.”
Abraham spoke up again: “See how I am presuming to speak to my Lord, though I am only dust and ashes! Abraham answered and said, “Behold, I have undertaken to speak to the Lord, I who am but dust and ashes. Then Abraham spoke up again: “Now that I have been so bold as to speak to the Lord, though I am nothing but dust and ashes,
What if there are five less than fifty righteous people? Will you destroy the whole city because of those five?” I will not destroy it, he answered, if I find forty-five there. Suppose five of the fifty righteous are lacking. Will you destroy the whole city for lack of five?” And he said, “I will not destroy it if I find forty-five there.” what if the number of the righteous is five less than fifty? Will you destroy the whole city for lack of five people?” “If I find forty-five there,” he said, “I will not destroy it.”
But Abraham persisted, saying, “What if only forty are found there?” He replied: I will refrain from doing it for the sake of the forty. Again he spoke to him and said, “Suppose forty are found there.” He answered, “For the sake of forty I will not do it.” Once again he spoke to him, “What if only forty are found there?” He said, “For the sake of forty, I will not do it.”
Then he said, “Do not let my Lord be angry if I go on. What if only thirty are found there?” He replied: I will refrain from doing it if I can find thirty there. Then he said, “Oh let not the Lord be angry, and I will speak. Suppose thirty are found there.” He answered, “I will not do it, if I find thirty there.” Then he said, “May the Lord not be angry, but let me speak. What if only thirty can be found there?” He answered, “I will not do it if I find thirty there.”
Abraham went on, “Since I have thus presumed to speak to my Lord, what if there are no more than twenty?” I will not destroy it, he answered, for the sake of the twenty. He said, “Behold, I have undertaken to speak to the Lord. Suppose twenty are found there.” He answered, “For the sake of twenty I will not destroy it.” Abraham said, “Now that I have been so bold as to speak to the Lord, what if only twenty can be found there?” He said, “For the sake of twenty, I will not destroy it.”
But he persisted: “Please, do not let my Lord be angry if I speak up this last time. What if ten are found there?” For the sake of the ten, he replied, I will not destroy it. Then he said, “Oh let not the Lord be angry, and I will speak again but this once. Suppose ten are found there.” He answered, “For the sake of ten I will not destroy it.” Then he said, “May the Lord not be angry, but let me speak just once more. What if only ten can be found there?” He answered, “For the sake of ten, I will not destroy it.”
The LORD departed as soon as he had finished speaking with Abraham, and Abraham returned home. And the LORD went his way, when he had finished speaking to Abraham, and Abraham returned to his place. When the LORD had finished speaking with Abraham, he left, and Abraham returned home.
