When Abram was ninety-nine years old, the LORD appeared to Abram and said: I am God the Almighty. Walk in my presence and be blameless. When Abram was ninety-nine years old the LORD appeared to Abram and said to him, “I am God Almighty; walk before me, and be blameless, When Abram was ninety-nine years old, the LORD appeared to him and said, “I am God Almighty; walk before me faithfully and be blameless.
Between you and me I will establish my covenant, and I will multiply you exceedingly. that I may make my covenant between me and you, and may multiply you greatly.” Then I will make my covenant between me and you and will greatly increase your numbers.”
Abram fell face down and God said to him: Then Abram fell on his face. And God said to him, Abram fell facedown, and God said to him,
For my part, here is my covenant with you: you are to become the father of a multitude of nations. “Behold, my covenant is with you, and you shall be the father of a multitude of nations. “As for me, this is my covenant with you: You will be the father of many nations.
No longer will you be called Abram; your name will be Abraham, for I am making you the father of a multitude of nations. No longer shall your name be called Abram, but your name shall be Abraham, for I have made you the father of a multitude of nations. No longer will you be called Abram; your name will be Abraham, for I have made you a father of many nations.
I will make you exceedingly fertile; I will make nations of you; kings will stem from you. I will make you exceedingly fruitful, and I will make you into nations, and kings shall come from you. I will make you very fruitful; I will make nations of you, and kings will come from you.
I will maintain my covenant between me and you and your descendants after you throughout the ages as an everlasting covenant, to be your God and the God of your descendants after you. And I will establish my covenant between me and you and your offspring after you throughout their generations for an everlasting covenant, to be God to you and to your offspring after you. I will establish my covenant as an everlasting covenant between me and you and your descendants after you for the generations to come, to be your God and the God of your descendants after you.
I will give to you and to your descendants after you the land in which you are now residing as aliens, the whole land of Canaan, as a permanent possession; and I will be their God. And I will give to you and to your offspring after you the land of your sojournings, all the land of Canaan, for an everlasting possession, and I will be their God.” The whole land of Canaan, where you now reside as a foreigner, I will give as an everlasting possession to you and your descendants after you; and I will be their God.”
God said to Abraham: For your part, you and your descendants after you must keep my covenant throughout the ages. And God said to Abraham, “As for you, you shall keep my covenant, you and your offspring after you throughout their generations. Then God said to Abraham, “As for you, you must keep my covenant, you and your descendants after you for the generations to come.
This is the covenant between me and you and your descendants after you that you must keep: every male among you shall be circumcised. This is my covenant, which you shall keep, between me and you and your offspring after you: Every male among you shall be circumcised. This is my covenant with you and your descendants after you, the covenant you are to keep: Every male among you shall be circumcised.
Circumcise the flesh of your foreskin. That will be the sign of the covenant between me and you. You shall be circumcised in the flesh of your foreskins, and it shall be a sign of the covenant between me and you. You are to undergo circumcision, and it will be the sign of the covenant between me and you.
Throughout the ages, every male among you, when he is eight days old, shall be circumcised, including houseborn slaves and those acquired with money from any foreigner who is not of your descendants. He who is eight days old among you shall be circumcised. Every male throughout your generations, whether born in your house or bought with your money from any foreigner who is not of your offspring, For the generations to come every male among you who is eight days old must be circumcised, including those born in your household or bought with money from a foreigner—those who are not your offspring.
Yes, both the houseborn slaves and those acquired with money must be circumcised. Thus my covenant will be in your flesh as an everlasting covenant. both he who is born in your house and he who is bought with your money, shall surely be circumcised. So shall my covenant be in your flesh an everlasting covenant. Whether born in your household or bought with your money, they must be circumcised. My covenant in your flesh is to be an everlasting covenant.
If a male is uncircumcised, that is, if the flesh of his foreskin has not been cut away, such a one will be cut off from his people; he has broken my covenant. Any uncircumcised male who is not circumcised in the flesh of his foreskin shall be cut off from his people; he has broken my covenant.” Any uncircumcised male, who has not been circumcised in the flesh, will be cut off from his people; he has broken my covenant.”
God further said to Abraham: As for Sarai your wife, do not call her Sarai; her name will be Sarah. And God said to Abraham, “As for Sarai your wife, you shall not call her name Sarai, but Sarah shall be her name. God also said to Abraham, “As for Sarai your wife, you are no longer to call her Sarai; her name will be Sarah.
I will bless her, and I will give you a son by her. Her also will I bless; she will give rise to nations, and rulers of peoples will issue from her. I will bless her, and moreover, I will give you a son by her. I will bless her, and she shall become nations; kings of peoples shall come from her.” I will bless her and will surely give you a son by her. I will bless her so that she will be the mother of nations; kings of peoples will come from her.”
Abraham fell face down and laughed as he said to himself, “Can a child be born to a man who is a hundred years old? Can Sarah give birth at ninety?” Then Abraham fell on his face and laughed and said to himself, “Shall a child be born to a man who is a hundred years old? Shall Sarah, who is ninety years old, bear a child?” Abraham fell facedown; he laughed and said to himself, “Will a son be born to a man a hundred years old? Will Sarah bear a child at the age of ninety?”
So Abraham said to God, “If only Ishmael could live in your favor!” And Abraham said to God, “Oh that Ishmael might live before you!” And Abraham said to God, “If only Ishmael might live under your blessing!”
God replied: Even so, your wife Sarah is to bear you a son, and you shall call him Isaac. It is with him that I will maintain my covenant as an everlasting covenant and with his descendants after him. God said, “No, but Sarah your wife shall bear you a son, and you shall call his name Isaac. I will establish my covenant with him as an everlasting covenant for his offspring after him. Then God said, “Yes, but your wife Sarah will bear you a son, and you will call him Isaac. I will establish my covenant with him as an everlasting covenant for his descendants after him.
Now as for Ishmael, I will heed you: I hereby bless him. I will make him fertile and will multiply him exceedingly. He will become the father of twelve chieftains, and I will make of him a great nation. As for Ishmael, I have heard you; behold, I have blessed him and will make him fruitful and multiply him greatly. He shall father twelve princes, and I will make him into a great nation. And as for Ishmael, I have heard you: I will surely bless him; I will make him fruitful and will greatly increase his numbers. He will be the father of twelve rulers, and I will make him into a great nation.
But my covenant I will maintain with Isaac, whom Sarah shall bear to you by this time next year. But I will establish my covenant with Isaac, whom Sarah shall bear to you at this time next year.” But my covenant I will establish with Isaac, whom Sarah will bear to you by this time next year.”
When he had finished speaking with Abraham, God departed from him. When he had finished talking with him, God went up from Abraham. When he had finished speaking with Abraham, God went up from him.
Then Abraham took his son Ishmael and all his slaves, whether born in his house or acquired with his money—every male among the members of Abraham’s household—and he circumcised the flesh of their foreskins on that same day, as God had told him to do. Then Abraham took Ishmael his son and all those born in his house or bought with his money, every male among the men of Abraham’s house, and he circumcised the flesh of their foreskins that very day, as God had said to him. On that very day Abraham took his son Ishmael and all those born in his household or bought with his money, every male in his household, and circumcised them, as God told him.
Abraham was ninety-nine years old when the flesh of his foreskin was circumcised, Abraham was ninety-nine years old when he was circumcised in the flesh of his foreskin. Abraham was ninety-nine years old when he was circumcised,
and his son Ishmael was thirteen years old when the flesh of his foreskin was circumcised. And Ishmael his son was thirteen years old when he was circumcised in the flesh of his foreskin. and his son Ishmael was thirteen;
Thus, on that same day Abraham and his son Ishmael were circumcised; That very day Abraham and his son Ishmael were circumcised. Abraham and his son Ishmael were both circumcised on that very day.
and all the males of his household, including the slaves born in his house or acquired with his money from foreigners, were circumcised with him. And all the men of his house, those born in the house and those bought with money from a foreigner, were circumcised with him. And every male in Abraham’s household, including those born in his household or bought from a foreigner, was circumcised with him.
