1 And there is a word of YHWH to me, saying, “And you, son of man, || Thus said Lord YHWH to the ground of Israel: The word of the LORD came to me: The word of the LORD came to me:
2 An end, the end has come on the four corners of the land. “And you, O son of man, thus says the Lord GOD to the land of Israel: An end! The end has come upon the four corners of the land. “Son of man, this is what the Sovereign LORD says to the land of Israel: “’The end! The end has come upon the four corners of the land!
3 Now [is] the end for you, || And I have sent My anger on you, || And judged you according to your ways, || And set all your abominations against you. Now the end is upon you, and I will send my anger upon you; I will judge you according to your ways, and I will punish you for all your abominations. The end is now upon you, and I will unleash my anger against you. I will judge you according to your conduct and repay you for all your detestable practices.
4 And My eye has no pity on you, nor do I spare, || For I set your ways against you, || And your abominations are in your midst, || And you have known that I [am] YHWH. And my eye will not spare you, nor will I have pity, but I will punish you for your ways, while your abominations are in your midst. Then you will know that I am the LORD. I will not look on you with pity; I will not spare you. I will surely repay you for your conduct and for the detestable practices among you. “’Then you will know that I am the LORD.’
5 Thus said Lord YHWH: Calamity, a single calamity, behold, it has come. “Thus says the Lord GOD: Disaster after disaster! Behold, it comes. “This is what the Sovereign LORD says: “’Disaster! Unheard-of disaster! See, it comes!
6 An end has come, the end has come, || It has awoken for you, behold, it has come. An end has come; the end has come; it has awakened against you. Behold, it comes. The end has come! The end has come! It has roused itself against you. See, it comes!
7 The circlet has come to you, O inhabitant of the land! The time has come, a day of trouble [is] near, || And not the shouting of mountains. Your doom has come to you, O inhabitant of the land. The time has come; the day is near, a day of tumult, and not of joyful shouting on the mountains. Doom has come upon you, upon you who dwell in the land. The time has come! The day is near! There is panic, not joy, on the mountains.
8 Now shortly I pour out My fury on you, || And have completed My anger against you, || And judged you according to your ways, || And set all your abominations against you. Now I will soon pour out my wrath upon you, and spend my anger against you, and judge you according to your ways, and I will punish you for all your abominations. I am about to pour out my wrath on you and spend my anger against you. I will judge you according to your conduct and repay you for all your detestable practices.
9 And My eye does not pity, nor do I spare, || I give to you according to your ways, || And your abominations are in your midst, || And you have known that [it is] I, YHWH, striking. And my eye will not spare, nor will I have pity. I will punish you according to your ways, while your abominations are in your midst. Then you will know that I am the LORD, who strikes. I will not look on you with pity; I will not spare you. I will repay you for your conduct and for the detestable practices among you. “’Then you will know that it is I the LORD who strikes you.
10 Behold, the day, behold, it has come, || The circlet has gone forth, || The rod has blossomed, the pride has flourished. “Behold, the day! Behold, it comes! Your doom has come; the rod has blossomed; pride has budded. “’See, the day! See, it comes! Doom has burst forth, the rod has budded, arrogance has blossomed!
11 The violence has risen to a rod of wickedness, || There is none of them, nor of their multitude, || Nor of their noise, nor is there wailing for them. Violence has grown up into a rod of wickedness. None of them shall remain, nor their abundance, nor their wealth; neither shall there be preeminence among them. Violence has arisen, a rod to punish the wicked. None of the people will be left, none of that crowd— none of their wealth, nothing of value.
12 The time has come, the day has arrived, || The buyer does not rejoice, || And the seller does not become a mourner, || For wrath [is] to all its multitude. The time has come; the day has arrived. Let not the buyer rejoice, nor the seller mourn, for wrath is upon all their multitude. The time has come! The day has arrived! Let not the buyer rejoice nor the seller grieve, for my wrath is on the whole crowd.
13 For the seller does not turn to the sold thing, || And yet their life [is] among the living, || For the vision [is] to all its multitude, || It does not turn back, || And none strengthens his life by his iniquity. For the seller shall not return to what he has sold, while they live. For the vision concerns all their multitude; it shall not turn back; and because of his iniquity, none can maintain his life. The seller will not recover the property that was sold— as long as both buyer and seller live. For the vision concerning the whole crowd will not be reversed. Because of their sins, not one of them will preserve their life.
14 They have blown with a horn to prepare the whole, || And none is going to battle, || For My wrath [is] to all its multitude. “They have blown the trumpet and made everything ready, but none goes to battle, for my wrath is upon all their multitude. “’They have blown the trumpet, they have made all things ready, but no one will go into battle, for my wrath is on the whole crowd.
15 The sword [is] outside, || And the pestilence and the famine within, || He who is in a field dies by sword, || And he who is in a city—Famine and pestilence devour him. The sword is without; pestilence and famine are within. He who is in the field dies by the sword, and him who is in the city famine and pestilence devour. Outside is the sword; inside are plague and famine. Those in the country will die by the sword; those in the city will be devoured by famine and plague.
16 And their fugitives have escaped away, || And they have been on the mountains || As doves of the valleys, || All of them making a noise—each for his iniquity. And if any survivors escape, they will be on the mountains, like doves of the valleys, all of them moaning, each one over his iniquity. The fugitives who escape will flee to the mountains. Like doves of the valleys, they will all moan, each for their own sins.
17 All the hands are feeble, and all knees go [as] waters. All hands are feeble, and all knees turn to water. Every hand will go limp; every leg will be wet with urine.
18 And they have girded on sackcloth, || And trembling has covered them, || And shame [is] on all faces, || And baldness on all their heads. They put on sackcloth, and horror covers them. Shame is on all faces, and baldness on all their heads. They will put on sackcloth and be clothed with terror. Every face will be covered with shame, and every head will be shaved.
19 They cast their silver into out-places, || And their gold becomes impurity. Their silver and gold are not able to deliver them, || In a day of the wrath of YHWH, || They do not satisfy their soul, || And they do not fill their bowels, || For it has been the stumbling-block of their iniquity. They cast their silver into the streets, and their gold is like an unclean thing. Their silver and gold are not able to deliver them in the day of the wrath of the LORD. They cannot satisfy their hunger or fill their stomachs with it. For it was the stumbling block of their iniquity. “’They will throw their silver into the streets, and their gold will be treated as a thing unclean. Their silver and gold will not be able to deliver them in the day of the LORD’s wrath. It will not satisfy their hunger or fill their stomachs, for it has caused them to stumble into sin.
20 As for the beauty of his ornament, || He set it for excellence, || And the images of their abominations, || Their detestable things—they made in it, || Therefore I have given it to them for impurity, His beautiful ornament they used for pride, and they made their abominable images and their detestable things of it. Therefore I make it an unclean thing to them. They took pride in their beautiful jewelry and used it to make their detestable idols. They made it into vile images; therefore I will make it a thing unclean for them.
21 And I have given it into the hand of the strangers for a prey, || And to the wicked of the land for a spoil, || And they have defiled it. And I will give it into the hands of foreigners for prey, and to the wicked of the earth for spoil, and they shall profane it. I will give their wealth as plunder to foreigners and as loot to the wicked of the earth, who will defile it.
22 And I have turned My face from them, || And they have defiled My hidden place, || Indeed, destroyers have come into it, and defiled it. I will turn my face from them, and they shall profane my treasured place. Robbers shall enter and profane it. I will turn my face away from the people, and robbers will desecrate the place I treasure. They will enter it and will defile it.
23 Make the chain; for the land || Has been full of bloody judgments, || And the city has been full of violence. “Forge a chain! For the land is full of bloody crimes and the city is full of violence. “’Prepare chains! For the land is full of bloodshed, and the city is full of violence.
24 And I have brought in the wicked of the nations, || And they have possessed their houses, || And I have caused the excellence of the strong to cease, || And those sanctifying them have been defiled. I will bring the worst of the nations to take possession of their houses. I will put an end to the pride of the strong, and their holy places shall be profaned. I will bring the most wicked of nations to take possession of their houses. I will put an end to the pride of the mighty, and their sanctuaries will be desecrated.
25 Destruction has come, || And they have sought peace, and there is none. When anguish comes, they will seek peace, but there shall be none. When terror comes, they will seek peace in vain.
26 Disaster comes on disaster, and report is on report, || And they have sought a vision from a prophet, || And law perishes from [the] priest, || And counsel from [the] elderly, Disaster comes upon disaster; rumor follows rumor. They seek a vision from the prophet, while the law perishes from the priest and counsel from the elders. Calamity upon calamity will come, and rumor upon rumor. They will go searching for a vision from the prophet, priestly instruction in the law will cease, the counsel of the elders will come to an end.
27 The king becomes a mourner, || And a prince puts on desolation, || And the hands of the people of the land are troubled, || I deal with them from their own way, || And I judge them with their own judgments, || And they have known that I [am] YHWH!” The king mourns, the prince is wrapped in despair, and the hands of the people of the land are paralyzed by terror. According to their way I will do to them, and according to their judgments I will judge them, and they shall know that I am the LORD.” The king will mourn, the prince will be clothed with despair, and the hands of the people of the land will tremble. I will deal with them according to their conduct, and by their own standards I will judge them. “’Then they will know that I am the LORD.’”
