1 And the word of the Lord came to me, saying: The word of the LORD came to me: The word of the LORD came to me:
2 And thou son of man, thus saith the Lord God to the land of Israel: The end is come, the end is come upon the four quarters of the land. “And you, O son of man, thus says the Lord GOD to the land of Israel: An end! The end has come upon the four corners of the land. “Son of man, this is what the Sovereign LORD says to the land of Israel: “’The end! The end has come upon the four corners of the land!
3 Now is an end come upon thee, and I will send my wrath upon thee, and I will judge thee according to thy ways: and I will set all thy abominations against thee. Now the end is upon you, and I will send my anger upon you; I will judge you according to your ways, and I will punish you for all your abominations. The end is now upon you, and I will unleash my anger against you. I will judge you according to your conduct and repay you for all your detestable practices.
4 And my eye shall not spare thee, and I will shew thee no pity: but I will lay thy ways upon thee, and thy abominations shall be in the midst of thee: and you shall know that I am the Lord. And my eye will not spare you, nor will I have pity, but I will punish you for your ways, while your abominations are in your midst. Then you will know that I am the LORD. I will not look on you with pity; I will not spare you. I will surely repay you for your conduct and for the detestable practices among you. “’Then you will know that I am the LORD.’
5 Thus saith the Lord God: One affliction, behold an affliction is come. “Thus says the Lord GOD: Disaster after disaster! Behold, it comes. “This is what the Sovereign LORD says: “’Disaster! Unheard-of disaster! See, it comes!
6 An end is come, the end is come, it hath awaked against thee: behold it is come. An end has come; the end has come; it has awakened against you. Behold, it comes. The end has come! The end has come! It has roused itself against you. See, it comes!
7 Destruction is come upon thee that dwellest in the land: the time is come, the day of slaughter is near, and not of the joy of mountains. Your doom has come to you, O inhabitant of the land. The time has come; the day is near, a day of tumult, and not of joyful shouting on the mountains. Doom has come upon you, upon you who dwell in the land. The time has come! The day is near! There is panic, not joy, on the mountains.
8 Now very shortly I will pour out my wrath upon thee, and I will accomplish my anger in thee: and I will judge thee according to thy ways, and I will lay upon thee all thy crimes. Now I will soon pour out my wrath upon you, and spend my anger against you, and judge you according to your ways, and I will punish you for all your abominations. I am about to pour out my wrath on you and spend my anger against you. I will judge you according to your conduct and repay you for all your detestable practices.
9 And my eye shall not spare, neither will I shew mercy: but I will lay thy ways upon thee, and thy abominations shall be in the midst of thee: and you shall know that I am the Lord that strike. And my eye will not spare, nor will I have pity. I will punish you according to your ways, while your abominations are in your midst. Then you will know that I am the LORD, who strikes. I will not look on you with pity; I will not spare you. I will repay you for your conduct and for the detestable practices among you. “’Then you will know that it is I the LORD who strikes you.
10 Behold the day, behold it is come: destruction is gone forth, the rod hath blossomed, pride hath budded. “Behold, the day! Behold, it comes! Your doom has come; the rod has blossomed; pride has budded. “’See, the day! See, it comes! Doom has burst forth, the rod has budded, arrogance has blossomed!
11 Iniquity is risen up into a rod of impiety: nothing of them shall remain, nor of their people, nor of the noise of them: and there shall be no rest among them. Violence has grown up into a rod of wickedness. None of them shall remain, nor their abundance, nor their wealth; neither shall there be preeminence among them. Violence has arisen, a rod to punish the wicked. None of the people will be left, none of that crowd— none of their wealth, nothing of value.
12 The time is come, the day is at hand: let not the buyer rejoice: nor the seller mourn: for wrath is upon all the people thereof. The time has come; the day has arrived. Let not the buyer rejoice, nor the seller mourn, for wrath is upon all their multitude. The time has come! The day has arrived! Let not the buyer rejoice nor the seller grieve, for my wrath is on the whole crowd.
13 For the seller shall not return to that which he hath sold, although their life be yet among the living. For the vision which regardeth all the multitude thereof, shall not go back: neither shall man be strengthened in the iniquity of his life. For the seller shall not return to what he has sold, while they live. For the vision concerns all their multitude; it shall not turn back; and because of his iniquity, none can maintain his life. The seller will not recover the property that was sold— as long as both buyer and seller live. For the vision concerning the whole crowd will not be reversed. Because of their sins, not one of them will preserve their life.
14 Blow the trumpet, let all be made ready, yet there is none to go to the battle: for my wrath shall be upon all the people thereof. “They have blown the trumpet and made everything ready, but none goes to battle, for my wrath is upon all their multitude. “’They have blown the trumpet, they have made all things ready, but no one will go into battle, for my wrath is on the whole crowd.
15 The sword without: and the pestilence, and the famine within: he that is in the field shall die by the sword: and they that are in the city, shall be devoured by the pestilence, and the famine. The sword is without; pestilence and famine are within. He who is in the field dies by the sword, and him who is in the city famine and pestilence devour. Outside is the sword; inside are plague and famine. Those in the country will die by the sword; those in the city will be devoured by famine and plague.
16 And such of them as shall flee shall escape: and they shall be in the mountains like doves of the valleys, all of them trembling, every one for his iniquity. And if any survivors escape, they will be on the mountains, like doves of the valleys, all of them moaning, each one over his iniquity. The fugitives who escape will flee to the mountains. Like doves of the valleys, they will all moan, each for their own sins.
17 All hands shall be made feeble, and all knees shall run with water. All hands are feeble, and all knees turn to water. Every hand will go limp; every leg will be wet with urine.
18 And they shall gird themselves with haircloth, and fear shall cover them, and shame shall be upon every face, and baldness upon all their heads. They put on sackcloth, and horror covers them. Shame is on all faces, and baldness on all their heads. They will put on sackcloth and be clothed with terror. Every face will be covered with shame, and every head will be shaved.
19 Their silver shall be cast forth, and their gold shall become a dunghill. Their silver and their gold shall not be able to deliver them in the day of the wrath of the Lord. They shall not satisfy their soul, and their bellies shall not be filled: because it hath been the stumblingblock of their iniquity. They cast their silver into the streets, and their gold is like an unclean thing. Their silver and gold are not able to deliver them in the day of the wrath of the LORD. They cannot satisfy their hunger or fill their stomachs with it. For it was the stumbling block of their iniquity. “’They will throw their silver into the streets, and their gold will be treated as a thing unclean. Their silver and gold will not be able to deliver them in the day of the LORD’s wrath. It will not satisfy their hunger or fill their stomachs, for it has caused them to stumble into sin.
20 And they have turned the ornament of their jewels into pride, and have made of it the images of their abominations, and idols: therefore I have made it an uncleanness to them. His beautiful ornament they used for pride, and they made their abominable images and their detestable things of it. Therefore I make it an unclean thing to them. They took pride in their beautiful jewelry and used it to make their detestable idols. They made it into vile images; therefore I will make it a thing unclean for them.
21 And I will give it into the hands of strangers for spoil, and to the wicked of the earth for a prey, and they shall defile it. And I will give it into the hands of foreigners for prey, and to the wicked of the earth for spoil, and they shall profane it. I will give their wealth as plunder to foreigners and as loot to the wicked of the earth, who will defile it.
22 And I will turn away my face from them, and they shall violate my secret place: and robbers shall enter into it, and defile it. I will turn my face from them, and they shall profane my treasured place. Robbers shall enter and profane it. I will turn my face away from the people, and robbers will desecrate the place I treasure. They will enter it and will defile it.
23 Make a shutting up: for the land is full of the judgment of blood, and the city is full of iniquity. “Forge a chain! For the land is full of bloody crimes and the city is full of violence. “’Prepare chains! For the land is full of bloodshed, and the city is full of violence.
24 And I will bring the worse of the nations, and they shall possess their houses: and I will make the pride of the mighty to cease, and they shall possess their sanctuary. I will bring the worst of the nations to take possession of their houses. I will put an end to the pride of the strong, and their holy places shall be profaned. I will bring the most wicked of nations to take possession of their houses. I will put an end to the pride of the mighty, and their sanctuaries will be desecrated.
25 When distress cometh upon them, they will seek for peace and there shall be none. When anguish comes, they will seek peace, but there shall be none. When terror comes, they will seek peace in vain.
26 Trouble shall come upon trouble, and rumour upon rumour, and they shall seek a vision of the prophet, and the law shall perish from the priest, and counsel from the ancients. Disaster comes upon disaster; rumor follows rumor. They seek a vision from the prophet, while the law perishes from the priest and counsel from the elders. Calamity upon calamity will come, and rumor upon rumor. They will go searching for a vision from the prophet, priestly instruction in the law will cease, the counsel of the elders will come to an end.
27 The king shall mourn, and the prince shall be clothed with sorrow, and the hands of the people of the land shall be troubled. I will do to them according to their way, and will judge them according to their judgments: and they shall know that I am the Lord. The king mourns, the prince is wrapped in despair, and the hands of the people of the land are paralyzed by terror. According to their way I will do to them, and according to their judgments I will judge them, and they shall know that I am the LORD.” The king will mourn, the prince will be clothed with despair, and the hands of the people of the land will tremble. I will deal with them according to their conduct, and by their own standards I will judge them. “’Then they will know that I am the LORD.’”
