1	THERE was in Cæs-a-re’a a man called Cornelius, a centurion of the regiment which is called the Italian,	At Caesarea there was a man named Cornelius, a centurion of what was known as the Italian Cohort,	At Caesarea there was a man named Cornelius, a centurion in what was known as the Italian Regiment.
2	A righteous and God-fearing man as were all his household; which gave much alms to the people, and always sought after God.	a devout man who feared God with all his household, gave alms generously to the people, and prayed continually to God.	He and all his family were devout and God-fearing; he gave generously to those in need and prayed to God regularly.
3	Very openly in a vision about three o’clock in the afternoon he saw an angel of God who came in to him, and said to him, Cornelius.	About the ninth hour of the day he saw clearly in a vision an angel of God come in and say to him, “Cornelius.”	One day at about three in the afternoon he had a vision. He distinctly saw an angel of God, who came to him and said, “Cornelius!”
4	And he looked at the angel and was afraid, and he said, What is it, my LORD? And the angel said to him, Your prayers and your alms have come up for a memorial before God.	And he stared at him in terror and said, “What is it, Lord?” And he said to him, “Your prayers and your alms have ascended as a memorial before God.	Cornelius stared at him in fear. “What is it, Lord?” he asked. The angel answered, “Your prayers and gifts to the poor have come up as a memorial offering before God.
5	And now send men to the city of Joppa, and bring here Simon who is called Peter:	And now send men to Joppa and bring one Simon who is called Peter.	Now send men to Joppa to bring back a man named Simon who is called Peter.
6	Behold he is staying with Simon Bur-saya, the tanner, whose house is by the seaside.	He is lodging with one Simon, a tanner, whose house is by the sea.”	He is staying with Simon the tanner, whose house is by the sea.”
7	And when the angel who spoke to him had departed, Cornelius called two of his household, and a soldier who believed in God and was obedient to him;	When the angel who spoke to him had departed, he called two of his servants and a devout soldier from among those who attended him,	When the angel who spoke to him had gone, Cornelius called two of his servants and a devout soldier who was one of his attendants.
8	And he related to them everything that he had seen, and sent them to Joppa.	and having related everything to them, he sent them to Joppa.	He told them everything that had happened and sent them to Joppa.
9	The next day, while they were on their journey, drawing near to the city, Simon Peter went up upon the housetop to pray about noontime. 10	And he became hungry, and wanted to eat: but while they were preparing food for him, he was seized with a sudden faintness. 11	And he saw the sky open and something fastened at the four corners, resembling a large linen cloth, was let down from heaven to the earth:	and saw the heavens opened and something like a great sheet descending, being let down by its four corners upon the earth. 12	And there were in it all kind of fourfooted beasts, and creeping things of the earth, and fowls of the air.	In it were all kinds of animals and reptiles and birds of the air.	It contained all kinds of four-footed animals, as well as reptiles and birds.
13	And there came a voice to him, saying, Simon Peter, rise; kill and eat.	And there came a voice to him: “Rise, Peter; kill and eat.”	Then a voice told him, “Get up, Peter. Kill and eat.”
14	But Simon Peter said, Far be it, my LORD; for I have never eaten anything which was unclean and defiled.	But Peter said, “By no means, Lord; for I have never eaten anything that is common or unclean.”	“Surely not, Lord!” Peter replied. “I have never eaten anything impure or unclean.”
15	And again the voice came to him a second time, What God has cleansed, you should not call unclean.	And the voice came to him again a second time, “What God has made clean, do not call common.”	The voice spoke to him a second time, “Do not call anything impure that God has made clean.”
16	This happened the third time: then the cloth was lifted up to the heaven.	This happened three times, and the thing was taken up at once to heaven.	This happened three times, and immediately the sheet was taken back to heaven.
17	Now while Simon Peter was bewildered, wondering in himself what the vision he had seen should mean, the men who were sent by Cornelius arrived, and enquired for the house in which Simon Peter had been staying, and they came and stood at the door of the courtyard.	Now while Peter was inwardly perplexed as to what the vision that he had seen might mean, behold, the men who were sent by Cornelius, having made inquiry for Simon’s house, stood at the gate	While Peter was wondering about the meaning of the vision, the men sent by Cornelius found out where Simon’s house was and stopped at the gate.
18	And from there they called and asked if Simon who is called Peter stayed there.	and called out to ask whether Simon who was called Peter was lodging there.	They called out, asking if Simon who was known as Peter was staying there.
19	While Simon Peter meditated about the vision, the Spirit said to him, Behold three men seek you.	And while Peter was pondering the vision, the Spirit said to him, “Behold, three men are looking for you.	While Peter was still thinking about the vision, the Spirit said to him, “Simon, three men are looking for you.
20	Arise, go down, and go with them, without doubt in your mind: for I have sent them.	Rise and go down and accompany them without hesitation, for I have sent them.”	So get up and go downstairs. Do not hesitate to go with them, for I have sent them.”
21	Then Simon Peter went down to the men and said, I am the man you seek. What is the purpose of your mission?	And Peter went down to the men and said, “I am the one you are looking for. What is the reason for your coming?”	Peter went down and said to the men, “I’m the one you’re looking for. Why have you come?”
22	They said to him, A man called Cornelius, a righteous and God-fearing centurion of whom all the Jewish people speak well, was told in a vision by a holy angel to send and bring you to his house and to hear words from you.	And they said, “Cornelius, a centurion, an upright and God-fearing man, who is well spoken of by the whole Jewish nation, was directed by a holy angel to send for you to come to his house and to hear what you have to say.”	The men replied, “We have come from Cornelius the centurion. He is a righteous and God-fearing man, who is respected by all the Jewish people. A holy angel told him to ask you to come to his house so that he could hear what you have to say.”
23	So Simon Peter brought them into the place where he was staying and welcomed them. The next day he arose and went with them, and a few men from amongst the brethren of Joppa accompanied him.	So he invited them in to be his guests. The next day he rose and went away with them, and some of the brothers from Joppa accompanied him.	Then Peter invited the men into the house to be his guests. The next day Peter started out with them, and some of the believers from Joppa went along.
24	And the next day they entered Cæs-are’a. And Cornelius was waiting for them, and all his relatives and also his dear friends were assembled with him.	And on the following day they entered Caesarea. Cornelius was expecting them and had called together his relatives and close friends.	The following day he arrived in Caesarea. Cornelius was expecting them and had called together his relatives and close friends.
25	And just as Simon Peter was entering, Cornelius met him and threw himself at his feet and worshipped him.	When Peter entered, Cornelius met him and fell down at his feet and worshiped him.	As Peter entered the house, Cornelius met him and fell at his feet in reverence.
26	But Simon Peter raised him, saying, Stand up; I am but a man also.	But Peter lifted him up, saying, “Stand up; I too am a man.”	But Peter made him get up. “Stand up,” he said, “I am only a man myself.”
27	And after he had talked with him, he went in and found a great many people had come there.	And as he talked with him, he went in and found many persons gathered.	While talking with him, Peter went inside and found a large gathering of people.
28	So he said to them, You know well that it is unlawful for a Jew to associate with a stranger who is not of his tribe; but God has showed me that I should not call any man common or unclean.	And he said to them, “You yourselves know how unlawful it is for a Jew to associate with or to visit anyone of another nation, but God has shown me that I should not call any person common or unclean.	He said to them: “You are well aware that it is against our law for a Jew to associate with or visit a Gentile. But God has shown me that I should not call anyone impure or unclean.
29	This is why I came at once when you sent for me: but now let me ask you, for what reason have you sent for me?	So when I was sent for, I came without objection. I ask then why you sent for me.”	So when I was sent for, I came without raising any objection. May I ask why you sent for me?”
30	Then Cornelius said to him, Four days I have been fasting; and at three o’clock in the afternoon while I was praying in my house, a man dressed in white garments stood before me.	And Cornelius said, “Four days ago, about this hour, I was praying in my house at the ninth hour, and behold, a man stood before me in bright clothing	Cornelius answered: “Three days ago I was in my house praying at this hour, at three in the afternoon. Suddenly a man in shining clothes stood before me
31	And said to me, Cornelius, your prayer has been heard, and your alms are a memorial before God.	and said, ‘Cornelius, your prayer has been heard and your alms have been remembered before God.	and said, ‘Cornelius, God has heard your prayer and remembered your gifts to the poor.
32	But send to the city of Joppa and bring Simon, who is called Peter; behold he is staying in the house of Simon Bur-sa’ya, the tanner, by the seaside: and he will come and talk with you.	Send therefore to Joppa and ask for Simon who is called Peter. He is lodging in the house of Simon, a tanner, by the sea.’	Send to Joppa for Simon who is called Peter. He is a guest in the home of Simon the tanner, who lives by the sea.’
33	At that very time I sent for you, and you have done well to come. Behold we are all here present before you, and we wish to hear everything commanded thee from God.	So I sent for you at once, and you have been kind enough to come. Now therefore we are all here in the presence of God to hear all that you have been commanded by the Lord.”	So I sent for you immediately, and it was good of you to come. Now we are all here in the presence of God to listen to everything the Lord has commanded you to tell us.”
34	Then Simon Peter opened his mouth and said, Of a truth I perceive that God is no respecter of persons:	So Peter opened his mouth and said: “Truly I understand that God shows no partiality,	Then Peter began to speak: “I now realize how true it is that God does not show favoritism
35	But among all people, he who fears him and works righteousness is accepted with him.	but in every nation anyone who fears him and does what is right is acceptable to him.	but accepts from every nation the one who fears him and does what is right.
36	For God sent the word to the children of Israel, preaching peace and tranquility by Jesus Christ: he is the LORD of all.	As for the word that he sent to Israel, preaching good news of peace through Jesus Christ (he is Lord of all),	You know the message God sent to the people of Israel, announcing the good news of peace through Jesus Christ, who is Lord of all.
37	And you also are familiar with the news which was published throughout Judæa, which sprang from Galilee, after the baptism preached by John;	you yourselves know what happened throughout all Judea, beginning from Galilee after the baptism that John proclaimed:	You know what has happened throughout the province of Judea, beginning in Galilee after the baptism that John preached—
38	Concerning Jesus of Nazareth, whom God anointed with the Holy Spirit and with power, and who, because God was with him, went about doing good and healing all who were oppressed of the devil.	how God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and with power. 39	And we are witnesses of all things which he did throughout the land of Judæa and in Jerusalem. They put him to death by hanging him on a tree,	“We are witnesses of everything he did in the country of the Jews and in Jerusalem. They killed him by hanging him on a cross,
40	Him God raised on the third day, and showed him openly;	but God raised him on the third day and made him to appear,	but God raised him from the dead on the third day and caused him to be seen.
41	Not to all the people, but to us who have been chosen by God to be his witnesses, for we did eat and drink with him after his resurrection from the dead.	not to all the people but to us who had been chosen by God as witnesses, who ate and drank with him after he rose from the dead.	He was not seen by all the people, but by witnesses whom God had already chosen—by us who ate and drank with him after he rose from the dead.
42	And he commanded us to preach to the people and to testify, that it is he who was ordained by God to be the judge of the living and of the dead.	And he commanded us to preach to the people and to testify that he is the one appointed by God to be judge of the living and the dead.	He commanded us to preach to the people and to testify that he is the one whom God appointed as judge of the living and the dead.
43	To him, all the prophets testified that whosoever believes in his name shall receive remission of sins.	To him all the prophets bear witness that everyone who believes in him receives forgiveness of sins through his name.”	All the prophets testify about him that everyone who believes in him receives forgiveness of sins through his name.”
44	While Simon Peter spoke these words, the Holy Spirit descended on all who heard the word.	While Peter was still saying these things, the Holy Spirit fell on all who heard the word.	While Peter was still speaking these words, the Holy Spirit came on all who heard the message.
45	And the Jewish converts who had come with him were seized with amazement because the gift of the Holy Spirit was poured out on the Gentiles also;	And the believers from among the circumcised who had come with Peter were amazed, because the gift of the Holy Spirit was poured out even on the Gentiles.	The circumcised believers who had come with Peter were astonished that the gift of the Holy Spirit had been poured out even on Gentiles.
46	For they heard them speak with divers tongues, and magnify God.	For they were hearing them speaking in tongues and extolling God. Then Peter declared,	For they heard them speaking in tongues and praising God. Then Peter said,
47	Then Simon Peter said to them, Can any man forbid water, that these people who have received the Holy Spirit, just as we have, should not be baptized?	“Can anyone withhold water for baptizing these people, who have received the Holy Spirit just as we have?”	“Surely no one can stand in the way of their being baptized with water. They have received the Holy Spirit just as we have.”
48	And he commanded them to be baptized in the name of our LORD Jesus Christ. And they urged him to remain with them a few days.	And he commanded them to be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ. Then they asked him to remain for some days.	So he ordered that they be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ. Then they asked Peter to stay with them for a few days.
