| 1“At that time the LORD said to me, ‘Hew for yourself two tablets of stone like the first, and come up to Me on the mountain and make yourself an ark of wood. | 1“At that time the LORD said to me, ‘Chisel out two stone tablets like the first ones. | 2And I will write on the tablets the words that were on the first tablets, which you broke; and you shall put them in the ark.’ | 2and I will write on the tablets the same words that were on the ones you smashed. Then place the tablets in the Ark.’ |
| 3“So I made an ark of acacia wood, hewed two tablets of stone like the first, and went up the mountain, having the two tablets in my hand. | 3“So I made an Ark of acacia wood and cut two stone tablets like the first two. Then I went up the mountain with the tablets in my hand. |
| 4And He wrote on the tablets according to the first writing, the Ten Commandments, which the LORD had spoken to you in the mountain from the midst of the fire in the day of the assembly; and the LORD gave them to me. | 4Once again the LORD wrote the Ten Commandments on the tablets and gave them to me. They were the same words the LORD had spoken to you from the heart of the fire on the day you were assembled at the foot of the mountain. |
| 5Then I turned and came down from the mountain, and put the tablets in the ark which I had made; and there they are, just as the LORD commanded me.” | 5Then I turned and came down the mountain and placed the tablets in the Ark of the Covenant, which I had made, just as the LORD commanded me. | 6(Now the children of Israel journeyed from the wells of Bene Jaakan to Moserah, where Aaron died, and where he was buried; and Eleazar his son ministered as priest in his stead. | 6(The people of Israel set out from the wells of the people of Jaakan and traveled to Moserah, where Aaron died and was buried. His son Eleazar ministered as high priest in his place. |
| 7From there they journeyed to Gudgodah, and from Gudgodah to Jotbathah, a land of rivers of water. | 7Then they journeyed to Gudgodah, and from there to Jotbathah, a land with many brooks and streams. |
| 8At that time the LORD separated the tribe of Levi to bear the ark of the covenant of the LORD, to stand before the LORD to minister to Him and to bless in His name, to this day. | 8At that time the LORD set apart the tribe of Levi to carry the Ark of the LORD’s Covenant, and to stand before the LORD as his ministers, and to pronounce blessings in his name. These are their duties to this day. |
| 9Therefore Levi has no portion nor inheritance with his brethren; the LORD is his inheritance, just as the LORD your God promised him.) | 9That is why the Levites have no share of property or possession of land among the other Israelite tribes. | 12“And now, Israel, what does the LORD your God require of you, but to fear the LORD your God, to walk in all His ways and to love Him, to serve the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul, | 12“And now, Israel, what does the LORD your God require of you? He requires only that you fear the LORD your God, and live in a way that pleases him, and love him and serve him with all your heart and soul. |
| 13and to keep the commandments of the LORD and His statutes which I command you today for your good? | 13And you must always obey the LORD’s commands and decrees that I am giving you today for your own good. |
| 14Indeed heaven and the highest heavens belong to the LORD your God, also the earth with all that is in it. | 14“Look, the highest heavens and the earth and everything in it all belong to the LORD your God. |
| 15The LORD delighted only in your fathers, to love them; and He chose their descendants after them, you above all peoples, as it is this day. | 15Yet the LORD chose your ancestors as the objects of his love. And he chose you, their descendants, above all other nations, as is evident today. |
| 16Therefore circumcise the foreskin of your heart, and be stiff-necked no longer. | 16Therefore, change your hearts and stop being stubborn. |
| 17For the LORD your God is God of gods and Lord of lords, the great God, mighty and awesome, who shows no partiality nor takes a bribe. | 17“For the LORD your God is the God of gods and Lord of lords. He is the great God, the mighty and awesome God, who shows no partiality and cannot be bribed. |
| 18He administers justice for the fatherless and the widow, and loves the stranger, giving him food and clothing. | 18He ensures that orphans and widows receive justice. He shows love to the foreigners living among you and gives them food and clothing. |
| 19Therefore love the stranger, for you were strangers in the land of Egypt. | 19So you, too, must show love to foreigners, for you yourselves were once foreigners in the land of Egypt. |
| 20You shall fear the LORD your God; you shall serve Him, and to Him you shall hold fast, and take oaths in His name. | 20You must fear the LORD your God and worship him and cling to him. Your oaths must be in his name alone. |
| 21He is your praise, and He is your God, who has done for you these great and awesome things which your eyes have seen. | 21He alone is your God, the only one who is worthy of your praise, the one who has done these mighty miracles that you have seen with your own eyes. |
| 22Your fathers went down to Egypt with seventy persons, and now the LORD your God has made you as the stars of heaven in multitude. | 22When your ancestors went down into Egypt, there were only seventy of them. But now the LORD your God has made you as numerous as the stars in the sky! |
