New King James VersionNET Bible
Behold, the LORD makes the earth empty and makes it waste, Distorts its surface And scatters abroad its inhabitants.1Look, the LORD is ready to devastate the earth and leave it in ruins; he will mar its surface and scatter its inhabitants.
And it shall be: As with the people, so with the priest; As with the servant, so with his master; As with the maid, so with her mistress; As with the buyer, so with the seller; As with the lender, so with the borrower; As with the creditor, so with the debtor.2Everyone will suffer--the priest as well as the people, the master as well as the servant, the elegant lady as well as the female attendant, the seller as well as the buyer, the borrower as well as the lender, the creditor as well as the debtor.
The land shall be entirely emptied and utterly plundered, For the LORD has spoken this word.3The earth will be completely devastated and thoroughly ransacked. For the LORD has decreed this judgment.
The earth mourns and fades away, The world languishes and fades away; The haughty people of the earth languish.4The earth dries up and withers, the world shrivels up and withers; the prominent people of the earth fade away.
The earth is also defiled under its inhabitants, Because they have transgressed the laws, Changed the ordinance, Broken the everlasting covenant.5The earth is defiled by its inhabitants, for they have violated laws, disregarded the regulation, and broken the permanent treaty.
Therefore the curse has devoured the earth, And those who dwell in it are desolate. Therefore the inhabitants of the earth are burned, And few men are left.6So a treaty curse devours the earth; its inhabitants pay for their guilt. This is why the inhabitants of the earth disappear, and are reduced to just a handful of people.
The new wine fails, the vine languishes, All the merry-hearted sigh.7The new wine dries up, the vines shrivel up, all those who like to celebrate groan.
The mirth of the tambourine ceases, The noise of the jubilant ends, The joy of the harp ceases.8The happy sound of the tambourines stops, the revelry of those who celebrate comes to a halt, the happy sound of the harp ceases.
They shall not drink wine with a song; Strong drink is bitter to those who drink it.9They no longer sing and drink wine; the beer tastes bitter to those who drink it.
The city of confusion is broken down; Every house is shut up, so that none may go in.10The ruined town is shattered; all of the houses are shut up tight.
There is a cry for wine in the streets, All joy is darkened, The mirth of the land is gone.11They howl in the streets because of what happened to the wine; all joy turns to sorrow; celebrations disappear from the earth.
In the city desolation is left, And the gate is stricken with destruction.12The city is left in ruins; the gate is reduced to rubble.
When it shall be thus in the midst of the land among the people, It shall be like the shaking of an olive tree, Like the gleaning of grapes when the vintage is done.13This is what will happen throughout the earth, among the nations. It will be like when they beat an olive tree, and just a few olives are left at the end of the harvest.
They shall lift up their voice, they shall sing; For the majesty of the LORD They shall cry aloud from the sea.14They lift their voices and shout joyfully; they praise the majesty of the LORD in the west.
Therefore glorify the LORD in the dawning light, The name of the LORD God of Israel in the coastlands of the sea.15So in the east extol the LORD, along the seacoasts extol the fame of the LORD God of Israel.
From the ends of the earth we have heard songs: “Glory to the righteous!” But I said, “I am ruined, ruined! Woe to me! The treacherous dealers have dealt treacherously, Indeed, the treacherous dealers have dealt very treacherously.”16From the ends of the earth we hear songs--the Just One is majestic. But I say, "I'm wasting away! I'm wasting away! I'm doomed! Deceivers deceive, deceivers thoroughly deceive!"
Fear and the pit and the snare Are upon you, O inhabitant of the earth.17Terror, pit, and snare are ready to overtake you inhabitants of the earth!
And it shall be That he who flees from the noise of the fear Shall fall into the pit, And he who comes up from the midst of the pit Shall be caught in the snare; For the windows from on high are open, And the foundations of the earth are shaken.18The one who runs away from the sound of the terror will fall into the pit; the one who climbs out of the pit, will be trapped by the snare. For the floodgates of the heavens are opened up and the foundations of the earth shake.
The earth is violently broken, The earth is split open, The earth is shaken exceedingly.19The earth is broken in pieces, the earth is ripped to shreds, the earth shakes violently.
The earth shall reel to and fro like a drunkard, And shall totter like a hut; Its transgression shall be heavy upon it, And it will fall, and not rise again.20The earth will stagger around like a drunk; it will sway back and forth like a hut in a windstorm. Its sin will weigh it down, and it will fall and never get up again.
It shall come to pass in that day That the LORD will punish on high the host of exalted ones, And on the earth the kings of the earth.21At that time the LORD will punish the heavenly forces in the heavens and the earthly kings on the earth.
They will be gathered together, As prisoners are gathered in the pit, And will be shut up in the prison; After many days they will be punished.22They will be imprisoned in a pit, locked up in a prison, and after staying there for a long time, they will be punished.
Then the moon will be disgraced And the sun ashamed; For the LORD of hosts will reign On Mount Zion and in Jerusalem And before His elders, gloriously.23The full moon will be covered up, the bright sun will be darkened; for the LORD who commands armies will rule on Mount Zion in Jerusalem in the presence of his assembly, in majestic splendor.
