“Most assuredly, I say to you, he who does not enter the sheepfold by the door, but climbs up some other way, the same is a thief and a robber. | 1"Truly, I tell all of you emphatically, the person who doesn't enter the sheepfold through the gate, but climbs in by some other way, is a thief and a bandit. |
But he who enters by the door is the shepherd of the sheep. | 2The one who enters through the gate is the shepherd of the sheep. |
To him the doorkeeper opens, and the sheep hear his voice; and he calls his own sheep by name and leads them out. | 3It's to him the gatekeeper opens the gate, and it's his voice the sheep hear. He calls his own sheep by name and leads them out. |
And when he brings out his own sheep, he goes before them; and the sheep follow him, for they know his voice. | 4When he has driven out all his own, he goes ahead of them, and the sheep follow him because they recognize his voice. |
Yet they will by no means follow a stranger, but will flee from him, for they do not know the voice of strangers.” | 5They'll never follow a stranger, but will run away from him because they don't recognize the voice of strangers." |
Jesus used this illustration, but they did not understand the things which He spoke to them. | 6Jesus used this illustration with them, but they didn't understand what he was saying to them. |
Then Jesus said to them again, “Most assuredly, I say to you, I am the door of the sheep. | 7So again Jesus said, "Truly, I tell all of you emphatically, I'm the gate for the sheep. |
All who ever came before Me are thieves and robbers, but the sheep did not hear them. | 8All who came before me are thieves and bandits, but the sheep didn't listen to them. |
I am the door. If anyone enters by Me, he will be saved, and will go in and out and find pasture. | 9I'm the gate. If anyone enters through me, he will be saved. He'll come in and go out and find pasture. |
The thief does not come except to steal, and to kill, and to destroy. I have come that they may have life, and that they may have it more abundantly. | 10The thief comes only to steal, slaughter, and destroy. I've come that they may have life, and have it abundantly. |
“I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd gives His life for the sheep. | 11"I'm the good shepherd. The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep. |
But a hireling, he who is not the shepherd, one who does not own the sheep, sees the wolf coming and leaves the sheep and flees; and the wolf catches the sheep and scatters them. | 12The hired worker, who isn't the shepherd and doesn't own the sheep, sees the wolf coming, deserts the sheep, and runs away. So the wolf snatches them and scatters them, |
The hireling flees because he is a hireling and does not care about the sheep. | 13because he's a hired worker, and the sheep don't matter to him. |
I am the good shepherd; and I know My sheep, and am known by My own. | 14I'm the good shepherd. I know my own and my own know me, |
As the Father knows Me, even so I know the Father; and I lay down My life for the sheep. | 15just as the Father knows me and I know the Father. And I lay down my life for the sheep. |
And other sheep I have which are not of this fold; them also I must bring, and they will hear My voice; and there will be one flock and one shepherd. | 16I have other sheep that don't belong to this fold. I must lead these also, and they'll listen to my voice. So there will be one flock and one shepherd. |
“Therefore My Father loves Me, because I lay down My life that I may take it again. | 17This is why the Father loves me, because I lay down my life in order to take it back again. |
No one takes it from Me, but I lay it down of Myself. I have power to lay it down, and I have power to take it again. This command I have received from My Father.” | 18No one is taking it from me; I lay it down of my own free will. I have the authority to lay it down, and I have the authority to take it back again. This is what my Father has commanded me." |
Therefore there was a division again among the Jews because of these sayings. | 19Once again there was a division among the Jews because of what Jesus had been saying. |
And many of them said, “He has a demon and is mad. Why do you listen to Him?” | 20Many of them were saying, "He has a demon and is insane. Why bother listening to him?" |
Others said, “These are not the words of one who has a demon. Can a demon open the eyes of the blind?” | 21Others were saying, "These are not the words of a man who is demon-possessed. A demon cannot open the eyes of the blind, can it?" |
Now it was the Feast of Dedication in Jerusalem, and it was winter. | 22Now Hanukkah was taking place in Jerusalem. It was winter, |
And Jesus walked in the temple, in Solomon’s porch. | 23and Jesus was walking around in the Temple inside the open porch of Solomon. |
Then the Jews surrounded Him and said to Him, “How long do You keep us in doubt? If You are the Christ, tell us plainly.” | 24So the Jewish leaders surrounded him and quizzed him, "How long are you going to keep us in suspense? If you're the Messiah, tell us so plainly." |
Jesus answered them, “I told you, and you do not believe. The works that I do in My Father’s name, they bear witness of Me. | 25Jesus answered them, "I have told you, but you don't believe it. The actions that I do in my Father's name testify on my behalf, |
But you do not believe, because you are not of My sheep, as I said to you. | 26but you don't believe, because you don't belong to my sheep. |
My sheep hear My voice, and I know them, and they follow Me. | 27My sheep hear my voice. I know them, and they follow me. |
And I give them eternal life, and they shall never perish; neither shall anyone snatch them out of My hand. | 28I give them eternal life, they'll never be lost, and no one will snatch them out of my hand. |
My Father, who has given them to Me, is greater than all; and no one is able to snatch them out of My Father’s hand. | 29What my Father has given me is more important than anything, and no one can snatch it from the Father's hand. |
I and My Father are one.” | 30I and the Father are one." |
Then the Jews took up stones again to stone Him. | 31Again the Jewish leaders picked up stones to stone him to death. |
Jesus answered them, “Many good works I have shown you from My Father. For which of those works do you stone Me?” | 32Jesus replied to them, "I've shown you many good actions from my Father. For which of them are you going to stone me?" |
The Jews answered Him, saying, “For a good work we do not stone You, but for blasphemy, and because You, being a Man, make Yourself God.” | 33The Jewish leaders answered him, "We are not going to stone you for a good action, but for blasphemy, because you, a mere man, are making yourself God!" |
Jesus answered them, “Is it not written in your law, ‘I said, “You are gods” ’? | 34Jesus replied to them, "Is it not written in your Law, 'I said, "You are gods"'? |
If He called them gods, to whom the word of God came (and the Scripture cannot be broken), | 35If he called those to whom a message from God came 'gods' (and the Scripture cannot be disregarded), |
do you say of Him whom the Father sanctified and sent into the world, ‘You are blaspheming,’ because I said, ‘I am the Son of God’? | 36how can you say to the one whom the Father has consecrated and sent into the world, 'You're blaspheming,' because I said, 'I'm the Son of God'? |
If I do not do the works of My Father, do not believe Me; | 37If I'm not doing my Father's actions, don't believe me. |
but if I do, though you do not believe Me, believe the works, that you may know and believe that the Father is in Me, and I in Him.” | 38But if I'm doing them, even though you don't believe me, believe the actions, so that you may know and understand that the Father is in me and I am in the Father." |
Therefore they sought again to seize Him, but He escaped out of their hand. | 39Again they tried to seize him, but he slipped away from them. |
And He went away again beyond the Jordan to the place where John was baptizing at first, and there He stayed. | 40Then he went away again across the Jordan to the place where John had been baptizing at first, and he remained there. |
Then many came to Him and said, “John performed no sign, but all the things that John spoke about this Man were true.” | 41Many people came to him and kept saying, "John never performed a sign, but everything that John said about this man is true!" |
And many believed in Him there. | 42And many believed in Jesus there. |
