Now the first day of the week Mary Magdalene went to the tomb early, while it was still dark, and saw that the stone had been taken away from the tomb.1On the first day of the week Mary Magdalene came to the tomb early, while it was still dark. She saw that the stone had been removed from the tomb.
Then she ran and came to Simon Peter, and to the other disciple, whom Jesus loved, and said to them, “They have taken away the Lord out of the tomb, and we do not know where they have laid Him.”2So she ran to Simon Peter and to the other disciple, the one Jesus loved, and said to them, "They have taken the Lord out of the tomb, and we don't know where they have put Him!"
Peter therefore went out, and the other disciple, and were going to the tomb.3At that, Peter and the other disciple went out, heading for the tomb.
So they both ran together, and the other disciple outran Peter and came to the tomb first.4The two were running together, but the other disciple outran Peter and got to the tomb first.
And he, stooping down and looking in, saw the linen cloths lying there; yet he did not go in.5Stooping down, he saw the linen cloths lying there, yet he did not go in.
Then Simon Peter came, following him, and went into the tomb; and he saw the linen cloths lying there,6Then, following him, Simon Peter came also. He entered the tomb and saw the linen cloths lying there.
and the handkerchief that had been around His head, not lying with the linen cloths, but folded together in a place by itself.7The wrapping that had been on His head was not lying with the linen cloths but was folded up in a separate place by itself.
Then the other disciple, who came to the tomb first, went in also; and he saw and believed.8The other disciple, who had reached the tomb first, then entered the tomb, saw, and believed.
For as yet they did not know the Scripture, that He must rise again from the dead.9For they still did not understand the Scripture that He must rise from the dead.
Then the disciples went away again to their own homes.10Then the disciples went home again.
But Mary stood outside by the tomb weeping, and as she wept she stooped down and looked into the tomb.11But Mary stood outside facing the tomb, crying. As she was crying, she stooped to look into the tomb.
And she saw two angels in white sitting, one at the head and the other at the feet, where the body of Jesus had lain.12She saw two angels in white sitting there, one at the head and one at the feet, where Jesus' body had been lying.
Then they said to her, “Woman, why are you weeping?” She said to them, “Because they have taken away my Lord, and I do not know where they have laid Him.”13They said to her, "Woman, why are you crying?"" Because they've taken away my Lord," she told them, "and I don't know where they've put Him."
Now when she had said this, she turned around and saw Jesus standing there, and did not know that it was Jesus.14Having said this, she turned around and saw Jesus standing there, though she did not know it was Jesus.
Jesus said to her, “Woman, why are you weeping? Whom are you seeking?” She, supposing Him to be the gardener, said to Him, “Sir, if You have carried Him away, tell me where You have laid Him, and I will take Him away.”15"Woman," Jesus said to her, "why are you crying? Who is it you are looking for?" Supposing He was the gardener, she replied, "Sir, if you've removed Him, tell me where you've put Him, and I will take Him away."
Jesus said to her, “Mary!” She turned and said to Him, “Rabboni!” (which is to say, Teacher).16Jesus said, "Mary." Turning around, she said to Him in Hebrew, "Rabbouni!"--which means "Teacher."
Jesus said to her, “Do not cling to Me, for I have not yet ascended to My Father; but go to My brethren and say to them, ‘I am ascending to My Father and your Father, and to My God and your God.’ ”17"Don't cling to Me," Jesus told her, "for I have not yet ascended to the Father. But go to My brothers and tell them that I am ascending to My Father and your Father--to My God and your God."
Mary Magdalene came and told the disciples that she had seen the Lord, and that He had spoken these things to her.18Mary Magdalene went and announced to the disciples, "I have seen the Lord!" And she told them what He had said to her.
Then, the same day at evening, being the first day of the week, when the doors were shut where the disciples were assembled, for fear of the Jews, Jesus came and stood in the midst, and said to them, “Peace be with you.”19In the evening of that first day of the week, the disciples were gathered together with the doors locked because of their fear of the Jews. Then Jesus came, stood among them, and said to them, "Peace to you!"
When He had said this, He showed them His hands and His side. Then the disciples were glad when they saw the Lord.20Having said this, He showed them His hands and His side. So the disciples rejoiced when they saw the Lord.
So Jesus said to them again, “Peace to you! As the Father has sent Me, I also send you.”21Jesus said to them again, "Peace to you! As the Father has sent Me, I also send you."
And when He had said this, He breathed on them, and said to them, “Receive the Holy Spirit.22After saying this, He breathed on them and said, "Receive the Holy Spirit.
If you forgive the sins of any, they are forgiven them; if you retain the sins of any, they are retained.”23If you forgive the sins of any, they are forgiven them; if you retain the sins of any, they are retained."
Now Thomas, called the Twin, one of the twelve, was not with them when Jesus came.24But one of the Twelve, Thomas (called "Twin"), was not with them when Jesus came.
The other disciples therefore said to him, “We have seen the Lord.” So he said to them, “Unless I see in His hands the print of the nails, and put my finger into the print of the nails, and put my hand into His side, I will not believe.”25So the other disciples kept telling him, "We have seen the Lord!" But he said to them, "If I don't see the mark of the nails in His hands, put my finger into the mark of the nails, and put my hand into His side, I will never believe!"
And after eight days His disciples were again inside, and Thomas with them. Jesus came, the doors being shut, and stood in the midst, and said, “Peace to you!”26After eight days His disciples were indoors again, and Thomas was with them. Even though the doors were locked, Jesus came and stood among them. He said, "Peace to you!"
Then He said to Thomas, “Reach your finger here, and look at My hands; and reach your hand here, and put it into My side. Do not be unbelieving, but believing.”27Then He said to Thomas, "Put your finger here and observe My hands. Reach out your hand and put it into My side. Don't be an unbeliever, but a believer."
And Thomas answered and said to Him, “My Lord and my God!”28Thomas responded to Him, "My Lord and my God!"
Jesus said to him, “Thomas, because you have seen Me, you have believed. Blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed.”29Jesus said, "Because you have seen Me, you have believed. Those who believe without seeing are blessed."
And truly Jesus did many other signs in the presence of His disciples, which are not written in this book;30Jesus performed many other signs in the presence of His disciples that are not written in this book.
but these are written that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that believing you may have life in His name.31But these are written so that you may believe Jesus is the Messiah, the Son of God, and by believing you may have life in His name.
