New King James Version | Holman Christian Standard Bible |
Now concerning spiritual gifts, brethren, I do not want you to be ignorant: | 1Now concerning what comes from the Spirit: brothers, I do not want you to be unaware. |
You know that you were Gentiles, carried away to these dumb idols, however you were led. | 2You know that when you were pagans, you used to be led off to the idols that could not speak. |
Therefore I make known to you that no one speaking by the Spirit of God calls Jesus accursed, and no one can say that Jesus is Lord except by the Holy Spirit. | 3Therefore I am informing you that no one speaking by the Spirit of God says, "Jesus is cursed," and no one can say, "Jesus is Lord," except by the Holy Spirit. |
There are diversities of gifts, but the same Spirit. | 4Now there are different gifts, but the same Spirit. |
There are differences of ministries, but the same Lord. | 5There are different ministries, but the same Lord. |
And there are diversities of activities, but it is the same God who works all in all. | 6And there are different activities, but the same God activates each gift in each person. |
But the manifestation of the Spirit is given to each one for the profit of all: | 7A demonstration of the Spirit is given to each person to produce what is beneficial: |
for to one is given the word of wisdom through the Spirit, to another the word of knowledge through the same Spirit, | 8to one is given a message of wisdom through the Spirit, to another, a message of knowledge by the same Spirit, |
to another faith by the same Spirit, to another gifts of healings by the same Spirit, | 9to another, faith by the same Spirit, to another, gifts of healing by the one Spirit, |
to another the working of miracles, to another prophecy, to another discerning of spirits, to another different kinds of tongues, to another the interpretation of tongues. | 10to another, the performing of miracles, to another, prophecy, to another, distinguishing between spirits, to another, different kinds of languages, to another, interpretation of languages. |
But one and the same Spirit works all these things, distributing to each one individually as He wills. | 11But one and the same Spirit is active in all these, distributing to each person as He wills. |
For as the body is one and has many members, but all the members of that one body, being many, are one body, so also is Christ. | 12For as the body is one and has many parts, and all the parts of that body, though many, are one body--so also is Christ. |
For by one Spirit we were all baptized into one body—whether Jews or Greeks, whether slaves or free—and have all been made to drink into one Spirit. | 13For we were all baptized by one Spirit into one body--whether Jews or Greeks, whether slaves or free--and we were all made to drink of one Spirit. |
For in fact the body is not one member but many. | 14So the body is not one part but many. |
If the foot should say, “Because I am not a hand, I am not of the body,” is it therefore not of the body? | 15If the foot should say, "Because I'm not a hand, I don't belong to the body," in spite of this it still belongs to the body. |
And if the ear should say, “Because I am not an eye, I am not of the body,” is it therefore not of the body? | 16And if the ear should say, "Because I'm not an eye, I don't belong to the body," in spite of this it still belongs to the body. |
If the whole body were an eye, where would be the hearing? If the whole were hearing, where would be the smelling? | 17If the whole body were an eye, where would the hearing be? If the whole body were an ear, where would the sense of smell be? |
But now God has set the members, each one of them, in the body just as He pleased. | 18But now God has placed each one of the parts in one body just as He wanted. |
And if they were all one member, where would the body be? | 19And if they were all the same part, where would the body be? |
But now indeed there are many members, yet one body. | 20Now there are many parts, yet one body. |
And the eye cannot say to the hand, “I have no need of you”; nor again the head to the feet, “I have no need of you.” | 21So the eye cannot say to the hand, "I don't need you!" Or again, the head can't say to the feet, "I don't need you!" |
No, much rather, those members of the body which seem to be weaker are necessary. | 22But even more, those parts of the body that seem to be weaker are necessary. |
And those members of the body which we think to be less honorable, on these we bestow greater honor; and our unpresentable parts have greater modesty, | 23And those parts of the body that we think to be less honorable, we clothe these with greater honor, and our unpresentable parts have a better presentation. |
but our presentable parts have no need. But God composed the body, having given greater honor to that part which lacks it, | 24But our presentable parts have no need of clothing. Instead, God has put the body together, giving greater honor to the less honorable, |
that there should be no schism in the body, but that the members should have the same care for one another. | 25so that there would be no division in the body, but that the members would have the same concern for each other. |
And if one member suffers, all the members suffer with it; or if one member is honored, all the members rejoice with it. | 26So if one member suffers, all the members suffer with it; if one member is honored, all the members rejoice with it. |
Now you are the body of Christ, and members individually. | 27Now you are the body of Christ, and individual members of it. |
And God has appointed these in the church: first apostles, second prophets, third teachers, after that miracles, then gifts of healings, helps, administrations, varieties of tongues. | 28And God has placed these in the church: first apostles, second prophets, third teachers, next miracles, then gifts of healing, helping, managing, various kinds of languages. |
Are all apostles? Are all prophets? Are all teachers? Are all workers of miracles? | 29Are all apostles? Are all prophets? Are all teachers? Do all do miracles? |
Do all have gifts of healings? Do all speak with tongues? Do all interpret? | 30Do all have gifts of healing? Do all speak in other languages? Do all interpret? |
But earnestly desire the best gifts. And yet I show you a more excellent way. | 31But desire the greater gifts. And I will show you an even better way. |
