A Contemplation of Asaph. O God, why have You cast us off forever? Why does Your anger smoke against the sheep of Your pasture? | 1O God, why do you cast us off forever? Why does your anger smoke against the sheep of your pasture? |
Remember Your congregation, which You have purchased of old, The tribe of Your inheritance, which You have redeemed— This Mount Zion where You have dwelt. | 2Remember your congregation, which you have purchased of old, which you have redeemed to be the tribe of your heritage! Remember Mount Zion, where you have dwelt. |
Lift up Your feet to the perpetual desolations. The enemy has damaged everything in the sanctuary. | 3Direct your steps to the perpetual ruins; the enemy has destroyed everything in the sanctuary! |
Your enemies roar in the midst of Your meeting place; They set up their banners for signs. | 4Your foes have roared in the midst of your meeting place; they set up their own signs for signs. |
They seem like men who lift up Axes among the thick trees. | 5They were like those who swing axes in a forest of trees. |
And now they break down its carved work, all at once, With axes and hammers. | 6And all its carved wood they broke down with hatchets and hammers. |
They have set fire to Your sanctuary; They have defiled the dwelling place of Your name to the ground. | 7They set your sanctuary on fire; they profaned the dwelling place of your name, bringing it down to the ground. |
They said in their hearts, “Let us destroy them altogether.” They have burned up all the meeting places of God in the land. | 8They said to themselves, “We will utterly subdue them”; they burned all the meeting places of God in the land. |
We do not see our signs; There is no longer any prophet; Nor is there any among us who knows how long. | 9We do not see our signs; there is no longer any prophet, and there is none among us who knows how long. |
O God, how long will the adversary reproach? Will the enemy blaspheme Your name forever? | 10How long, O God, is the foe to scoff? Is the enemy to revile your name forever? |
Why do You withdraw Your hand, even Your right hand? Take it out of Your bosom and destroy them. | 11Why do you hold back your hand, your right hand? Take it from the fold of your garment and destroy them! |
For God is my King from of old, Working salvation in the midst of the earth. | 12Yet God my King is from of old, working salvation in the midst of the earth. |
You divided the sea by Your strength; You broke the heads of the sea serpents in the waters. | 13You divided the sea by your might; you broke the heads of the sea monsters on the waters. |
You broke the heads of Leviathan in pieces, And gave him as food to the people inhabiting the wilderness. | 14You crushed the heads of Leviathan; you gave him as food for the creatures of the wilderness. |
You broke open the fountain and the flood; You dried up mighty rivers. | 15You split open springs and brooks; you dried up ever-flowing streams. |
The day is Yours, the night also is Yours; You have prepared the light and the sun. | 16Yours is the day, yours also the night; you have established the heavenly lights and the sun. |
You have set all the borders of the earth; You have made summer and winter. | 17You have fixed all the boundaries of the earth; you have made summer and winter. |
Remember this, that the enemy has reproached, O LORD, And that a foolish people has blasphemed Your name. | 18Remember this, O LORD, how the enemy scoffs, and a foolish people reviles your name. |
Oh, do not deliver the life of Your turtledove to the wild beast! Do not forget the life of Your poor forever. | 19Do not deliver the soul of your dove to the wild beasts; do not forget the life of your poor forever. |
Have respect to the covenant; For the dark places of the earth are full of the haunts of cruelty. | 20Have regard for the covenant, for the dark places of the land are full of the habitations of violence. |
Oh, do not let the oppressed return ashamed! Let the poor and needy praise Your name. | 21Let not the downtrodden turn back in shame; let the poor and needy praise your name. |
Arise, O God, plead Your own cause; Remember how the foolish man reproaches You daily. | 22Arise, O God, defend your cause; remember how the foolish scoff at you all the day! |
Do not forget the voice of Your enemies; The tumult of those who rise up against You increases continually. | 23Do not forget the clamor of your foes, the uproar of those who rise against you, which goes up continually! |
