For behold, the Lord, the LORD of hosts, Takes away from Jerusalem and from Judah The stock and the store, The whole supply of bread and the whole supply of water;1Note this: The Lord GOD of Armies is about to remove from Jerusalem and from Judah every kind of security: the entire supply of bread and water,
The mighty man and the man of war, The judge and the prophet, And the diviner and the elder;2heroes and warriors, judges and prophets, fortune-tellers and elders,
The captain of fifty and the honorable man, The counselor and the skillful artisan, And the expert enchanter.3commanders of fifty and dignitaries, counselors, cunning magicians, and necromancers.
“I will give children to be their princes, And babes shall rule over them.4"I will make youths their leaders, and unstable rulers will govern them."
The people will be oppressed, Every one by another and every one by his neighbor; The child will be insolent toward the elder, And the base toward the honorable.”5The people will oppress one another, man against man, neighbor against neighbor; the young will act arrogantly toward the old, and the worthless toward the honorable.
When a man takes hold of his brother In the house of his father, saying, “You have clothing; You be our ruler, And let these ruins be under your power,”6A man will even seize his brother in his father's house, saying: "You have a cloak--you be our leader! This heap of rubble will be under your control."
In that day he will protest, saying, “I cannot cure your ills, For in my house is neither food nor clothing; Do not make me a ruler of the people.”7On that day he will cry out, saying: "I'm not a healer. I don't even have food or clothing in my house. Don't make me the leader of the people!"
For Jerusalem stumbled, And Judah is fallen, Because their tongue and their doings Are against the LORD, To provoke the eyes of His glory.8For Jerusalem has stumbled and Judah has fallen because they have spoken and acted against the LORD, defying his glorious presence.
The look on their countenance witnesses against them, And they declare their sin as Sodom; They do not hide it. Woe to their soul! For they have brought evil upon themselves.9The look on their faces testifies against them, and like Sodom, they flaunt their sin; they do not conceal it. Woe to them, for they have brought disaster on themselves.
“Say to the righteous that it shall be well with them, For they shall eat the fruit of their doings.10Tell the righteous that it will go well for them, for they will eat the fruit of their labor.
Woe to the wicked! It shall be ill with him, For the reward of his hands shall be given him.11Woe to the wicked--it will go badly for them, for what they have done will be done to them.
As for My people, children are their oppressors, And women rule over them. O My people! Those who lead you cause you to err, And destroy the way of your paths.”12Youths oppress my people, and women rule over them. My people, your leaders mislead you; they confuse the direction of your paths.
The LORD stands up to plead, And stands to judge the people.13The LORD rises to argue the case and stands to judge the people.
The LORD will enter into judgment With the elders of His people And His princes: “For you have eaten up the vineyard; The plunder of the poor is in your houses.14The LORD brings this charge against the elders and leaders of his people: "You have devastated the vineyard. The plunder from the poor is in your houses.
What do you mean by crushing My people And grinding the faces of the poor?” Says the Lord GOD of hosts.15Why do you crush my people and grind the faces of the poor?" This is the declaration of the Lord GOD of Armies.
Moreover the LORD says: “Because the daughters of Zion are haughty, And walk with outstretched necks And wanton eyes, Walking and mincing as they go, Making a jingling with their feet,16The LORD also says: Because the daughters of Zion are haughty, walking with heads held high and seductive eyes, prancing along, jingling their ankle bracelets,
Therefore the Lord will strike with a scab The crown of the head of the daughters of Zion, And the LORD will uncover their secret parts.”17the Lord will put scabs on the heads of the daughters of Zion, and the LORD will shave their foreheads bare.
In that day the Lord will take away the finery: The jingling anklets, the scarves, and the crescents;18On that day the Lord will strip their finery: ankle bracelets, headbands, crescents,
The pendants, the bracelets, and the veils;19pendants, bracelets, veils,
The headdresses, the leg ornaments, and the headbands; The perfume boxes, the charms,20headdresses, ankle jewelry, sashes, perfume bottles, amulets,
and the rings; The nose jewels,21signet rings, nose rings,
the festal apparel, and the mantles; The outer garments, the purses,22festive robes, capes, cloaks, purses,
and the mirrors; The fine linen, the turbans, and the robes.23garments, linen clothes, turbans, and shawls.
And so it shall be: Instead of a sweet smell there will be a stench; Instead of a sash, a rope; Instead of well-set hair, baldness; Instead of a rich robe, a girding of sackcloth; And branding instead of beauty.24Instead of perfume there will be a stench; instead of a belt, a rope; instead of beautifully styled hair, baldness; instead of fine clothes, sackcloth; instead of beauty, branding.
Your men shall fall by the sword, And your mighty in the war.25Your men will fall by the sword, your warriors in battle.
Her gates shall lament and mourn, And she being desolate shall sit on the ground.26Then her gates will lament and mourn; deserted, she will sit on the ground.
