Early on the first day of the week, while it was still dark, Mary Magdalene went to the tomb and saw that the stone had been removed from the entrance. | 1Now on the first day of the week Mary Magdalene came early to the tomb, while it was still dark, and saw the stone already taken away from the tomb. |
So she came running to Simon Peter and the other disciple, the one Jesus loved, and said, "They have taken the Lord out of the tomb, and we don't know where they have put him!" | 2So she ran and came to Simon Peter and to the other disciple whom Jesus loved, and said to them, "They have taken away the Lord out of the tomb, and we do not know where they have laid Him." |
So Peter and the other disciple started for the tomb. | 3So Peter and the other disciple went forth, and they were going to the tomb. |
Both were running, but the other disciple outran Peter and reached the tomb first. | 4The two were running together; and the other disciple ran ahead faster than Peter and came to the tomb first; |
He bent over and looked in at the strips of linen lying there but did not go in. | 5and stooping and looking in, he saw the linen wrappings lying there; but he did not go in. |
Then Simon Peter came along behind him and went straight into the tomb. He saw the strips of linen lying there, | 6And so Simon Peter also came, following him, and entered the tomb; and he saw the linen wrappings lying there, |
as well as the cloth that had been wrapped around Jesus' head. The cloth was still lying in its place, separate from the linen. | 7and the face-cloth which had been on His head, not lying with the linen wrappings, but rolled up in a place by itself. |
Finally the other disciple, who had reached the tomb first, also went inside. He saw and believed. | 8So the other disciple who had first come to the tomb then also entered, and he saw and believed. |
(They still did not understand from Scripture that Jesus had to rise from the dead.) | 9For as yet they did not understand the Scripture, that He must rise again from the dead. |
Then the disciples went back to where they were staying. | 10So the disciples went away again to their own homes. |
Now Mary stood outside the tomb crying. As she wept, she bent over to look into the tomb | 11But Mary was standing outside the tomb weeping; and so, as she wept, she stooped and looked into the tomb; |
and saw two angels in white, seated where Jesus' body had been, one at the head and the other at the foot. | 12and she saw two angels in white sitting, one at the head and one at the feet, where the body of Jesus had been lying. |
They asked her, "Woman, why are you crying?" "They have taken my Lord away," she said, "and I don't know where they have put him." | 13And they said to her, "Woman, why are you weeping?" She said to them, "Because they have taken away my Lord, and I do not know where they have laid Him." |
At this, she turned around and saw Jesus standing there, but she did not realize that it was Jesus. | 14When she had said this, she turned around and saw Jesus standing there, and did not know that it was Jesus. |
He asked her, "Woman, why are you crying? Who is it you are looking for?" Thinking he was the gardener, she said, "Sir, if you have carried him away, tell me where you have put him, and I will get him." | 15Jesus said to her, "Woman, why are you weeping? Whom are you seeking?" Supposing Him to be the gardener, she said to Him, "Sir, if you have carried Him away, tell me where you have laid Him, and I will take Him away." |
Jesus said to her, "Mary." She turned toward him and cried out in Aramaic, "Rabboni!" (which means "Teacher"). | 16Jesus said to her, "Mary!" She turned and said to Him in Hebrew, "Rabboni!" (which means, Teacher). |
Jesus said, "Do not hold on to me, for I have not yet ascended to the Father. Go instead to my brothers and tell them, 'I am ascending to my Father and your Father, to my God and your God.'" | 17Jesus said to her, "Stop clinging to Me, for I have not yet ascended to the Father; but go to My brethren and say to them, 'I ascend to My Father and your Father, and My God and your God.'" |
Mary Magdalene went to the disciples with the news: "I have seen the Lord!" And she told them that he had said these things to her. | 18Mary Magdalene came, announcing to the disciples, "I have seen the Lord," and that He had said these things to her. |
On the evening of that first day of the week, when the disciples were together, with the doors locked for fear of the Jewish leaders, Jesus came and stood among them and said, "Peace be with you!" | 19So when it was evening on that day, the first day of the week, and when the doors were shut where the disciples were, for fear of the Jews, Jesus came and stood in their midst and said to them, "Peace be with you." |
After he said this, he showed them his hands and side. The disciples were overjoyed when they saw the Lord. | 20And when He had said this, He showed them both His hands and His side. The disciples then rejoiced when they saw the Lord. |
Again Jesus said, "Peace be with you! As the Father has sent me, I am sending you." | 21So Jesus said to them again, "Peace be with you; as the Father has sent Me, I also send you." |
And with that he breathed on them and said, "Receive the Holy Spirit. | 22And when He had said this, He breathed on them and said to them, "Receive the Holy Spirit. |
If you forgive anyone's sins, their sins are forgiven; if you do not forgive them, they are not forgiven." | 23"If you forgive the sins of any, their sins have been forgiven them; if you retain the sins of any, they have been retained." |
Now Thomas (also known as Didymus), one of the Twelve, was not with the disciples when Jesus came. | 24But Thomas, one of the twelve, called Didymus, was not with them when Jesus came. |
So the other disciples told him, "We have seen the Lord!" But he said to them, "Unless I see the nail marks in his hands and put my finger where the nails were, and put my hand into his side, I will not believe." | 25So the other disciples were saying to him, "We have seen the Lord!" But he said to them, "Unless I see in His hands the imprint of the nails, and put my finger into the place of the nails, and put my hand into His side, I will not believe." |
A week later his disciples were in the house again, and Thomas was with them. Though the doors were locked, Jesus came and stood among them and said, "Peace be with you!" | 26After eight days His disciples were again inside, and Thomas with them. Jesus came, the doors having been shut, and stood in their midst and said, "Peace be with you." |
Then he said to Thomas, "Put your finger here; see my hands. Reach out your hand and put it into my side. Stop doubting and believe." | 27Then He said to Thomas, "Reach here with your finger, and see My hands; and reach here your hand and put it into My side; and do not be unbelieving, but believing." |
Thomas said to him, "My Lord and my God!" | 28Thomas answered and said to Him, "My Lord and my God!" |
Then Jesus told him, "Because you have seen me, you have believed; blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed." | 29Jesus said to him, "Because you have seen Me, have you believed? Blessed are they who did not see, and yet believed." |
Jesus performed many other signs in the presence of his disciples, which are not recorded in this book. | 30Therefore many other signs Jesus also performed in the presence of the disciples, which are not written in this book; |
But these are written that you may believe that Jesus is the Messiah, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in his name. | 31but these have been written so that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God; and that believing you may have life in His name. |
