My father made me swear an oath. He said, "I am about to die. Bury me in my tomb that I dug for myself there in the land of Canaan." Now let me go and bury my father; then I will return.'" | 5Tell him that my father made me swear an oath. He said to me, ‘Listen, I am about to die. Take my body back to the land of Canaan, and bury me in the tomb I prepared for myself.’ So please allow me to go and bury my father. After his burial, I will return without delay.” |
So Pharaoh said, "Go and bury your father, just as he made you swear to do." | 6Pharaoh agreed to Joseph’s request. “Go and bury your father, as he made you promise,” he said. |

So they sent word to Joseph, saying, "Your father gave these instructions before he died: | 16So they sent this message to Joseph: “Before your father died, he instructed us |
Tell Joseph this: Please forgive the sin of your brothers and the wrong they did when they treated you so badly.' Now please forgive the sin of the servants of the God of your father." When this message was reported to him, Joseph wept. | 17to say to you: ‘Please forgive your brothers for the great wrong they did to you—for their sin in treating you so cruelly.’ So we, the servants of the God of your father, beg you to forgive our sin.” When Joseph received the message, he broke down and wept. |
Then his brothers also came and threw themselves down before him; they said, "Here we are; we are your slaves." | 18Then his brothers came and threw themselves down before Joseph. “Look, we are your slaves!” they said. |
But Joseph answered them, "Don't be afraid. Am I in the place of God? | 19But Joseph replied, “Don’t be afraid of me. Am I God, that I can punish you? |
As for you, you meant to harm me, but God intended it for a good purpose, so he could preserve the lives of many people, as you can see this day. | 20You intended to harm me, but God intended it all for good. He brought me to this position so I could save the lives of many people. |
