| 1The LORD's angelic messenger went up from Gilgal to Bokim. He said, "I brought you up from Egypt and led you into the land I had solemnly promised to give to your ancestors. I said, 'I will never break my agreement with you, | 1The angel of the LORD went up from Gilgal to Bokim and said, "I brought you up out of Egypt and led you into the land I swore to give to your ancestors. I said, 'I will never break my covenant with you, |
| 2but you must not make an agreement with the people who live in this land. You should tear down the altars where they worship.' But you have disobeyed me. Why would you do such a thing? | 2and you shall not make a covenant with the people of this land, but you shall break down their altars.' Yet you have disobeyed me. Why have you done this? |
| 3At that time I also warned you, 'If you disobey, I will not drive out the Canaanites before you. They will ensnare you and their gods will lure you away.'" | 3And I have also said, 'I will not drive them out before you; they will become traps for you, and their gods will become snares to you.'" |
| 4When the LORD's messenger finished speaking these words to all the Israelites, the people wept loudly. | 4When the angel of the LORD had spoken these things to all the Israelites, the people wept aloud, |
| 5They named that place Bokim and offered sacrifices to the LORD there. | 5and they called that place Bokim. There they offered sacrifices to the LORD. |
| 6When Joshua dismissed the people, the Israelites went to their allotted portions of territory, intending to take possession of the land. | 6After Joshua had dismissed the Israelites, they went to take possession of the land, each to their own inheritance. |
| 7The people worshiped the LORD throughout Joshua's lifetime and as long as the elderly men who outlived him remained alive. These men had witnessed all the great things the LORD had done for Israel. | 7The people served the LORD throughout the lifetime of Joshua and of the elders who outlived him and who had seen all the great things the LORD had done for Israel. |

| 10That entire generation passed away; a new generation grew up that had not personally experienced the LORD's presence or seen what he had done for Israel. | 10After that whole generation had been gathered to their ancestors, another generation grew up who knew neither the LORD nor what he had done for Israel. |
| 11The Israelites did evil before the LORD by worshiping the Baals. | 11Then the Israelites did evil in the eyes of the LORD and served the Baals. |
| 12They abandoned the LORD God of their ancestors who brought them out of the land of Egypt. They followed other gods--the gods of the nations who lived around them. They worshiped them and made the LORD angry. | 12They forsook the LORD, the God of their ancestors, who had brought them out of Egypt. They followed and worshiped various gods of the peoples around them. They aroused the LORD's anger |
| 13They abandoned the LORD and worshiped Baal and the Ashtars. | 13because they forsook him and served Baal and the Ashtoreths. |
| 14The LORD was furious with Israel and handed them over to robbers who plundered them. He turned them over to their enemies who lived around them. They could not withstand their enemies' attacks. | 14In his anger against Israel the LORD gave them into the hands of raiders who plundered them. He sold them into the hands of their enemies all around, whom they were no longer able to resist. |
| 15Whenever they went out to fight, the LORD did them harm, just as he had warned and solemnly vowed he would do. They suffered greatly. | 15Whenever Israel went out to fight, the hand of the LORD was against them to defeat them, just as he had sworn to them. They were in great distress. |
| 16The LORD raised up leaders who delivered them from these robbers. | 16Then the LORD raised up judges, who saved them out of the hands of these raiders. |
| 17But they did not obey their leaders. Instead they prostituted themselves to other gods and worshiped them. They quickly turned aside from the path their ancestors had walked. Their ancestors had obeyed the LORD's commands, but they did not. | 17Yet they would not listen to their judges but prostituted themselves to other gods and worshiped them. They quickly turned from the ways of their ancestors, who had been obedient to the LORD's commands. |
| 18When the LORD raised up leaders for them, the LORD was with each leader and delivered the people from their enemies while the leader remained alive. The LORD felt sorry for them when they cried out in agony because of what their harsh oppressors did to them. | 18Whenever the LORD raised up a judge for them, he was with the judge and saved them out of the hands of their enemies as long as the judge lived; for the LORD relented because of their groaning under those who oppressed and afflicted them. |
| 19When a leader died, the next generation would again act more wickedly than the previous one. They would follow after other gods, worshiping them and bowing down to them. They did not give up their practices or their stubborn ways. | 19But when the judge died, the people returned to ways even more corrupt than those of their ancestors, following other gods and serving and worshiping them. They refused to give up their evil practices and stubborn ways. |
| 20The LORD was furious with Israel. He said, "This nation has violated the terms of the agreement I made with their ancestors by disobeying me. | 20Therefore the LORD was very angry with Israel and said, "Because this nation has violated the covenant I ordained for their ancestors and has not listened to me, |
| 21So I will no longer remove before them any of the nations that Joshua left unconquered when he died. | 21I will no longer drive out before them any of the nations Joshua left when he died. |
| 22Joshua left those nations to test Israel. I wanted to see whether or not the people would carefully walk in the path marked out by the LORD, as their ancestors were careful to do." | 22I will use them to test Israel and see whether they will keep the way of the LORD and walk in it as their ancestors did." |
| 23This is why the LORD permitted these nations to remain and did not conquer them immediately; he did not hand them over to Joshua. | 23The LORD had allowed those nations to remain; he did not drive them out at once by giving them into the hands of Joshua. |
